One morning, Maud, a middle-aged film director, wakes up and realizes that half of her body is paralyzed. At the hospital, she falls into a coma. When she wakes up again, she is helpless. Her mind is alert, but her body has become the subject of medical treatment. Gradually, her condition improves, and she is discharged. Aside from occasional visits from her family, Maud is mostly alone. On TV, she sees a program featuring Vilko, a convicted million-dollar con artist who has been released from prison and became a celebrity thanks to a scheme in which he swindled 135 million. Vilko may be a criminal, but he has an undeniable charisma. When Maud meets him, she sees him as the perfect choice for the lead role in her next film - a film that, however, will ultimately never be made. For Maud falls for the con artist, who fleeces her like a church mouse. Although she is aware that he is cheating her, she cannot bring herself to resist. For Vilko and his family, who take care of Maud, bring a joy she has never known before into her life. Vilko's wife, Andy, becomes like a sister and a mother to her. Although she - the well-known director - should actually be the dominant figure, Maud helplessly faces her financial ruin. For ultimately, only her downfall will restore her freedom.
