Celeste Robinson's goal of becoming a kindergarten teacher takes a turn when she fails her probationary teaching year, her methods deemed too avant-garde. Her evaluator believes she is better suited to another job for which she has gotten her an interview: as an au pair, this job specifically looking after the two offspring of widowed Richard Tyler, a wealthy developer across the country in New York City. In needing a job, Celeste views if she gets it solely a stop gap measure in her goal of returning to teaching. Despite her major faux pas during the interview which was conducted solely by one of Richard's assistants, Josh, Celeste gets the job. Those mistakes specifically with Richard don't stop upon her arrival in New York, the two who continually butt heads in their differences of opinion on the minding of the offspring, which busy Richard does not have the time to oversee beyond setting the rules. Initially, Celeste is also unaware that her two charges, teenage Lilly and preteen Max, who have had a series of aux pairs, have the goal of making her life so miserable to make her quit like all those before her. It may take Celeste getting to the source of the issues with the Tylers that turn the tides, including Richard seeing Celeste in a different, softer light despite being in a relationship with business partner, Julie.
