Inspired by the true story of The Reverend Frederick Densham, director Mark Collicott's A Congregation of Ghosts tells the tragic story of a pious holy man whose efforts to educate the citizens of an insular country village make him a pariah both in life and in death. His years of work as a missionary in India having instilled him with great respect for the culture and the work of Mahatma Gandhi, Reverend Densham (Edward Woodward) arrives at his new post in the Cornish village of Warleggan on Bodmin Moor spiritually invigorated, and intent on spreading teachings of peace and tolerance. When his unorthodox teachings raise the ire of his uneducated, fiercely traditional congregation, however, Reverend Densham is ostracized by the very community he vowed to serve, and left to die alone. Later, the locals having refused to bury the reverend in the churchyard as tradition dictates, his tombstone stands as a somber testament to the blinding effects of fear on the faithful.
