Her parents divorced when she was 3; her mother later remarried (and eventually divorced) actor Norman Rodway.
At 17, auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, both in London, but was not accepted; eventually enrolled at London's Drama Centre at 19.
Made film debut in Hear My Song (1991) as Nancy, a part for which she auditioned while still in drama school.
Won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, and a New York Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ophelia opposite Ralph Fiennes' Hamlet, her 1995 Broadway debut.
