• At 13, he was writing, directing and starring in his own short films
• His parents sent him to work on oil rigs with his grandfather at age 17, which he continued to do off and on until he was 25
• In 1999, he portrayed Groucho Marx in the play A Night in the Ukraine, for which he won Best Male Actor at the Alberta High School Zone Provincials
• Studied at the Vancouver Film School
• At age 25, he suffered a job-related accident on an oil rig that almost resulted in the amputation of his right leg
