  • Was captured by the Nazis during World War II, but managed to escape from a German labor camp and remain in hiding until the war was over
  • Handled bookkeeping for a film company in Rome, before joining a local theater group and gaining the attention of director Luchino Visconti
  • Made his big-screen debut in a 1947 Italian version of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables
  • Gained international attention for his performance in Federico Fellini's landmark La Dolce Vita (1960)
  • Costarred in numerous films with Sophia Loren, including Too Bad She's Bad (1955), Marriage Italian Style (1964) and Robert Altman's Ready to Wear (1994), the actors' final pairing
  • Following his death, in tribute to a scene from La Dolce Vita, Rome's Trevi Fountain was turned off and draped in black crepe
