Upon graduating from CalArts in 1985, was offered a yearlong contract at Disney by Michael Eisner. Mangold didn't mesh well with the studio bosses and his only credit from this time is a cowriter's credit on Oliver & Company.
After being fired from Disney, returned to school to get his MFA from Columbia, studying under Milos Forman.
Won a Special Jury Prize for Directing at the Sundance Film Festival for his directorial debut, 1995's Heavy.
Had a cameo as a movie director in his own film, 2001's Kate & Leopold.
