  • Began acting career as a singer and comic in Minneapolis before moving to New York City, where he made his Broadway debut in Zoe Akins' comedy O Evening Star in 1936
  • Served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II, and earned a Bronze Star for his heroism at the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943
  • After the war, started a production company that made educational films for schoolchildren
  • Appeared in scores of plays, films and early TV productions, but is perhaps best known for a starring role in the CBS sitcom Green Acres (1965-71) as Oliver Wendell Douglas, a New York attorney who leaves the city behind to live on a farm with his wife, who was played by Eva Gabor
  • Also an activist, was devoted to humanitarian and environmental causes, and the first Earth Day—April 22, 1970—took place on his birthday
