Her marriage to the wealthy "Life" magazine photographer John Swope allowed her to pick and choose her roles in her later life

Many of the roles she played were of sincere, practical and dignified women
Though she played parts in a variety of genres, she had a keen ability to present moving performances in tearjerkers
Founded the La Jolla Playhouse on the University of California, San Diego campus along with Gregory Peck and Mel Ferrer
Her name was left out of the "In Memoriam" tribute at the 2002 Academy Awards, and the Motion Picture Academy explained that it was because they only had the air time to list 15 to 20 names
