• At age 15, dropped out of school and took a job running errands and mopping the stage floor at the Dundee Repertory Theater
• Won two prestigious Olivier Awards for Best Actor for his performances in the London productions of Rat in the Skull in 1984, and Titus Andronicus in 1989
• Played Hannibal Lecter in Michael Mann's Manhunter (1986) five years before Anthony Hopkins assumed the role in The Silence of the Lambs
• In 1990, went on tour with the Royal National Theatre and was in simultaneous stage productions of King Lear and Richard III
• Wrote a memoir of his busy year called The Lear Diaries, which was published in 1993
• Has voiced characters in numerous video games, including Scolar Visari in the Killzone franchise, and Lionel Starkweather in PS2's Manhunt
