Attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he trained under John Gielgud and was a classmate of Alan Bates, Albert Finney and Peter O'Toole
Left school at the age of 15 and worked in a warehouse during the day and performed in amateur theater at night

In addition to acting, he was also a stage director who put on more than 20 shows at the Stratford Festival
