  • First got into acting through Shakespeare productions at his grammar school
  • Made his screen debut in the 1971 film Get Carter after writing a letter to MGM, upon learning they were filming nearby, and subsequently met with director Mike Hodges who was keen to cast local actors
  • Spent nine years with the Royal Shakespeare Company, from 1979 to 1988
  • In September 2014 the town of Stanley, nearby his home town of Annfield Plain, renamed its Civic Hall Theatre, where as a 16 year old he played guitar on the stage, the Alun Armstrong Theatre
