Episode 1
Colin West reports his 6-year-old boy missing. He is found attacked and beaten and rushed to hospital. It will be days before he can give a statement. Suspicion instead falls on Barney Crane, a patient from Denham House Mental Hospital.
Episode 2
When a small-time criminal goes berserk when served with a pint in a pub, the police become involved. But tracing the cause of his violence leads to darker waters, and a full-scale health crisis for the residents of Newtown.
Episode 3
Val Murray is sexually assaulted by tradesman Sam Rogers. Her husband Chris takes his revenge on Rogers, leaving him in a coma. He later hands himself into the police. Alec Quilley attempts to discover his former school friend's motives.
Episode 4
Regional crime squad arrest forger Arnold Porter on Supt. Walkinshaw patch. He is not happy they have placed him incommunicado. At a party, Walkinshaw let's slip they have a prisoner leaving for Wales from Manchester and Porter is sprung.
Episode 5
A series of lorry hijackings leads Newtown to send Braithwaite undercover as a driver. Does the key to the crimes lie in a roadside drivers' cafe, and can Braithwaite stay undetected, despite the attentions of the cafe staff?
Episode 6
Clarrie Enwright is impersonating a debt collector. He persuades members of the public to hand him cash in lieu of damaging their credit status. When he calls on Claire Trencher he is unaware he is talking to her boyfriend Insp. Moffat.
Episode 7
Sgt Quilley does a favour for business man Donald Dynes by asking god worshipping squatter Wiskers to leave a disused factory. Quilley returns later in the day and finds Becker, a thwarted bank robber with a shotgun holding him hostage.
Episode 8
Scrap dealer Jack Crawford has been stripping stolen cars for years, but has always evaded justice. Detective Sgt. Bowker, having had run-ins with Crawford in the past, is determined to nail him after he rips off a local councillor's car.
Episode 9
Quilley and Render rush to the quarry and discover the watchman unconscious and dynamite stolen. A car, with three occupants, is stopped leaving the quarry but the watchman claims there is a fourth man. Moffat tries to find how he left.
Episode 10
Judo instructor PC Milne is attacked by three youths on his way home. He uses self defence and leaves two injured and one in intensive care. At the magistrate's court they claim he attacked them because Kevin is dating Milne's daughter.
Episode 11
Roddy Seaton is digging on Lord Loman's estate when he finds a suitcase full of stolen silver. Bert Lynch recognises it from a robbery in 1970. Charlie Gann is serving seven years for the crime and convinces Sgt. Bowker he may be innocent.
Episode 12
The detective's wayward brother comes back from travel, and appears to have skeletons in the cupboard, making the detective face tough choices of loyalty versus duty
Episode 13
Ronnie Burnett is behind a juvenile crime-wave. Barry Hooper witnesses him attempt to steal a transistor radio but refuses to give up his school friend's name. Barry is taken to the station where his silence makes him appear complicit.
