The murder of antiquarian Hubertus Weissinger and a missing painting titled "The Tears of the Madonna" present detectives Benedikt Beissl, Jerry Paulsen, and Sophia Strasser with a perplexing case. Initially, neither a motive nor any suspects can be found. When, of all times, the criminal Tarek Kristo, with whom Jerry Paulsen has a score to settle from his Hamburg days, checks into a hotel in Berchtesgaden, it seems no coincidence to him. Disguised as hotel guests, he and his colleague Sophia Strasser follow Kristo. Thus, they remain unaware that Detective Benedikt Beissl is being held captive by the young Anton Hauser in a mountain cabin during his investigation. Beissl's wife Elisabeth and daughter Eva wait for him in vain at the Salzburg Opera, unaware of the deadly danger he is in.
