Episode 1

Around the Horn

Adams, Hawks, and Wooster have a first class sailing trip to Boston planned while Flint is going back cross country through rough Indian territory. However, while Flint is being treated as an honored guest by Indians and visiting the now sheriff, Willy Moran, the other three men are shanghaied on a freighter headed to New Orleans with the fair Captain Cobb but a vengeful first mate. The men settle into being sailors and find the Captain has his young daughter and her tutor Minnie on board. The girl, Pat, is excited to hear Adams talk about the west. Minnie is concerned, however, that Pat is being harmed in the all male environment with no children. Adams is forced to hit the first mate to save Pat during a storm and could be subject to hanging. He is freed but the first mate tries to frame him for harming Minnie. Confusion reigns due to conflicting stories as the Captain investigates to learn the truth and further hears that Adams proposed to Minnie. Adams uses the false story to help Minnie and Pat while trying to return to land. In the end a new wagon train is formed with some odd members.

The Juan Ortega Story

Three men creep upon a Mexican man and his son Juan sleeping and lynch the man. Later in Sioux territory, Flint comes upon Juan squatting under his father's body. The boy is frightened and refuses to talk. They bury the man and Juan is assigned to the Thorton wagon which has the most room. As they move further into a valley Flint is very edgy about the Sioux. When he finds a man severely cut up by the Indians near death, Adams decides to camp. The man is put in the Thorton wagon where Juan recognizes him as one of the three men. He makes a native poultice for the man which helps him. The man revives and tells Juan where the other two men are. Juan finds one of them and hangs him. Flint and Adams find the third man Booley still alive followed by the man Juan lynched. Later Juan lynches Booley while the train prepares for the Sioux raid. When the Sioux attack, Juan tries to strangle the wounded man Jarvis but Jarvis is able to stop him and reveal facts Juan was not aware of. Juan's future suddenly changes and it is unclear if it is for the good or bad.

The Jennifer Churchill Story

Flint goes back to help Hawks bring up some late additions to the wagon train including Jennifer Churchhill who has no ability to drive a wagon alone to California. She is the spoiled daughter of a wealthy man and is suppose to marry a man she doesn't love so she ran away. Flint tells her to hire a driver but she has no money so Flint grudgingly helps her but she still manages to wreck her wagon and lose her team. She stays with Flint and Wooster but her father has sent bounty hunters after her. The dislike her and Flint have for each other soon turns into an attraction for each other. Flint decides to take her ahead to catch a stage to California rather than let bounty hunters catch her. However, when he learns her father is waiting for her at the stage line from two hermits, he decides to try a different tactic but events don't produce the result he hoped for.

The Tobias Jones Story

While Hawks and Wooster are picking up supplies in town, Tobias Jones and a young orphan girl Midge stow away on the supply wagon. When they later announce themselves to the Major, he has no choice but to allow them to stay but it is clear Tobias is a drunk always needing his "medicine". Michael and Martha Folsum are on the train carrying $10,000 in their wagon. Michael has problems getting along with everyone including Al Meadows. Martha asks to take Midge over Michael's objections. Midge wants to stay with Tobias but Tobias realizes Midge will be better off with the Folsums. During a dance Martha discovers Michael stabbed to death with a knife belonging to Tobias. Meadows is ready to lynch Tobais. Tobais refuses to defend himself and admits to the killing to the Major but the Major doesn't believe him. Some questions arise about the knife but Midge's statement she saw Tobias come out of the wagon paints him guilty. The Major is still not convinced as he doesn't believe Tobias is capable of murder. Question is whether he can find a way to clear Tobias and who is the killer?

The Liam Fitzmorgan Story

Liam Fitzmorgan has been sent by rebels in Ireland to kill an informer who is a doctor. The doctor has traveled to the United States and Liam has heard he is on the Adams wagon train. Flint finds Liam stranded and dehydrated after his horse was injured. He quickly recovers and is taken in by a group of Irish who are on the train. There is no doctor on the train nor anyone going by the name Liam was given. He quickly becomes attracted to the Irish girl Laura Grady. The train is plagued with a lot of small thefts but no suspect has been found. Laura's dad notices that a black bag of his is missing - a doctor's bag. One of the Irishmen, Carney, is the thief and decides to blackmail Mr. Grady. Liam learns Carney has a black medical bag and confronts him thinking he is the doctor. Carney tells who the read doctor is and Liam confronts Grady but backs off on Laura's word and his love for her. Carney realizes he may be outed and shoots Liam in the back. However, his actions produce a result unintended by Carney.

The Doctor Willoughby Story

Major Adams is requested by the governor to pick up Dr. Carol Ames Willoughby and take her to Silver Creek. When Adams learns she is a doctor and by herself, he initially refuses but finally agrees to the request. She is late when she picks up one of the wagon train passengers Bart Grover at the hotel. He is drunk but she notices he is also very sick. He is an old friend of Adams who has been a drunk since the war. The doctor tends to him in her wagon trying to sober him up. Her attentions eventually brings a spark to him and a desire to live - sober. The train finds one man dead and another mortally wounded by Indians. The wounded man tells them they had a fight with Chief Black Elk. When the Indians arrive, Adams talks to them and learns Black Elk was shot in the shoulder and needs a doctor. Seth believes the wagon train's only chance is for him to try to save Black Elk. Upon hearing this the doctor decides to go with Adams. Black Elk needs surgery to remove the bullet but the tribe does not allow female medicine men. She directs Adams on what to do. Black Elk is saved but the doctor decides to stay until Black Elk is healed while the train and the changed Grover continue.

The Bije Wilcox Story

The wagon train is pinned down by threatening Cheyenne Indians. Flint has gone for the Army to provide an escort. While waiting Bije Wilcox walks into camp looking for Francis Mason. Mason has offered a $5,000 reward leading to finding his lost brother. Against advice to not go Mason leaves with Wilcox. Wilcox leads him to a remote site to sit and wait for Medicinie Mark who hates all white men and has never let a live white man leave his presence. Wilcox tells Mason that Medicine Mark is his brother. The Cheyenne take the two men captive and Mason learns that Wilcox told the truth. The brothers were raised in Virginia under an intolerant father. As a boy Medicine Mark was against slavery and was despised by all his friends including his own brother so he feels he has no white family or brother. To prove his love Mason decides to become Medicine Mark's Cheyenne brother by going through their ceremony which involves great pain.

The Millie Davis Story

Eight years after she took in an orphaned newborn, Millie and the girl Penny are visited by their long time friend Flint at Cherokee. The incoming stage is held up by the bandit Ike who has a $1,000 bounty on him. After killing the drivers, he forces the three passengers to walk into Cherokee. Upon arriving in Cherokee, they meet Millie and Flint. They tell Millie that they are there to look for information on Mrs. Winston's dead son and wife and her granddaughter they believe is still there. Initially Millie tells them Penny is Flint and her daughter but she comes to realize Mrs. Winston has the resources to give Penny the up bringing she deserves. Penny rebels and runs away to her old prospector friends but Ike overhears the situation and takes Penny hostage for ransom.

Episode 9

The Sakae Ito Story

The wagon train finds a stranded wagon with two Japanese men after an attack by Comanches. One is a samurai who was escorting a Prince from Japan who has died to Washington DC. The men are now returning to Japan. A man known as Sailor who had been to the Far East and Japan befriends the Japanese men believing a case they carried held expensive jewels. He and his three friends plot to leave the train, have the Japanese accompany them, and then rob them. When Sakae Ito decides to stay with the train due to Adam's advice, the men kill his aide and steal the box. When they open it, they find only the ashes of the dead Prince and an inexpensive religious idol. Ito follows them and as he prepares to attack with his sword, the Comanches surround them. The Chief realizes Ito is not white. He takes the surviving men's guns and gives them tomahawks. Adams, Hawks, and Wooster arrive to find Ito has hacked the men to death and Ito says he must commit hara-kiri there instead of returning to Japan. The Chief upon learning this realizes Ito is a special person and sends Adams and his men back as there must be no more killing.

The Tent City Story

People on the train are hungry and one of the men shoots a buffalo against the wishes of Adams who has an agreement with the local Chief, White Eagle. Adams forces the man to bury the buffalo and puts him in chains. Flint returns with permission to kill five buffalo from White Eagle. However, Adams against the advise of Flint keeps the man in chains. Flint quits the train and finds a job as Sheriff in the nearby Tent City owned by Will Hardisty. One of White Eagle's braves see the buffalo buried and reports it to White Eagle. White Eagle understands Adams did not break their treaty but wants the man to punish by death but Hawks refuses. A second man from Tent City kills a deer and is arrested by Flint. White Eagle confronts the Major and Hardisty wanting the two men so he can punish them. Flint suggests he and White Eagle settle the argument the Indian way - a fight to the death.

The Beauty Jamison Story

The wagon train stops outside the Jamison ranch which is massive. Flint with Wooster visiting the Will Jamison grave site finds a man stabbed with a note saying "Deliver to Beauty Jamison" who is the surviving daughter of Jamison. Flint takes the body to the Jamison ranch and learns the dead man was a gunfighter and foreman for Beauty. She offers Flint the job but he turns her down while running into an old friend from the East Steve Marshall who lost a hand in the war. Beauty is trying to uphold the control her father had but she is too immature to understand how to do it. Steve is in love with her and is trying to work out the problems but Beauty's ego gets in the way. Flint suggests the ranchers form a Cattlemen's Association which they do but Beauty's new foreman, Jud Bascombe, wants to use force against them. His actions force the ranchers into action and his $20 toll per wagon pushes Flint to confront Jub and Beauty. Flint takes on Jud and Steve has to handle Beauty who has lost control.

The Mary Ellen Thomas Story

Mary Ellen Thomas is traveling west with Jenkins and his son to live with her remaining family. Her dad, Jenkins' business partner, has passed away leaving her an orphan. Because of her rough life and treatment by the Jenkins, Mary Ellen has developed a gruff attitude, especially toward adults. She is frequently in trouble and causes the Major and his men grief. She has one friend on the train: Sally Mayhew, who is dying from consumption. Her parents are taking her to Colorado for her health but have come too late to help her. Sally is confined to her wagon and Mary Ellen gives her a mouse for companionship. As a prank she puts it in a woman's sewing bag, but Mary Ellen is blamed. As they approach the Rockies, it becomes apparent it will be too late for Sally, so the Major decides to stop the train and have an early Christmas party for her. Sally is from Louisiana and Mary Ellen, knowing she wants to see snow, decides to go off for it on her own without letting anyone know. On the way she finds an Indian boy with a broken leg. Her actions put her into a scary situation, but for a change the end result pleases everyone.

The Dick Richardson Story

Two families from the same community in Kentucky are on the train. The Richardsons are expecting a baby while Ken Milford, his daughter-in-law and grandson are together. The Milfords blame Dick Richardson for the collapse of the bank he took over from his father for the suicide of Ken's son. Richardson is also an expert on horses so when the train's horses start dying from a disease, he and Milford are sent to buy new horses with Adam's $1500 emergency fund. Milford against Richardson's advice makes a quick deal with horse traders not realizing they are rustlers. A posse kills Milford and arrests Richardson as they don't believe his story. When Milford's horse returns to the train alone, Adams realizes he may have made a mistake and goes after Richardson. Adams finds Richardson who escaped jail but he not sure whether to believe Richardson although Mrs. Richardson has told Adams a secret.

The Kitty Angel Story

Flint comes upon a Shawnee encampment where everyone has been killed by the Sioux except for a male papoose. Flint takes him back to the wagon train where Adams is busy with women complaining about Kitty Angel being on the train. One of the men let it slip that she worked in saloons as an entertainer and singer. Everyone but four people vote to kick her off the train. Flint gives the baby to Adams who cannot get anyone to take the baby until Kitty says she will. Flint tells Adams that the Sioux are trying to get the papoose who is the son of the Chief so they can kill him. Adams tells everyone Kitty and the baby will stay for safety reasons. Later, Adams recognizes the spots on the baby as smallpox. Kitty and the baby named Saturday along with eighty year old Obediah Finch who has volunteered to help Kitty are isolated behind the train to protect everyone. The Sioux know the baby has smallpox but they attack anyway but are stopped. As the baby recovers Kitty gets smallpox herself but eventually recovers. At the Oklahoma border Kitty, Saturday, and Obediah decide to leave the train. As they leave the rest of the train upon seeing Kitty realize what she has sacrificed for Saturday's survival.

The Flint McCullough Story

Flint returns home to Fort Bridger to visit Jim Bridger who raised him. The appearance of a man from his time in the Confeerate Army brings back the past. He wanted to marry Jean Yates but because she was Morman her father objected. When two men came for supplies at the fort, they revealed they were in the Conderate Army and looking for volunteers. Flint being born in Virginia had been thinking about joining and decides to join them. Unknown to him, however, the group is acting as a guerrilla force to steal gold shipments and they take no prisoners. Not understanding what he has gotten into, Flint allows a prisoner to escape before being killed. The prisoner is tracked to the home of Jean and her parents. The commander orders the prisoner and family killed to preserve their anonymity. Flint is determined to exact revenge for their death and awaits the appearance of his old commander. However, the war and time have had an effect Flint did not expect.

The Hunter Malloy Story

Hunter Malloy and Whitey Burke signed on as drivers for the Garner couple the day after their driver was killed in a saloon. The Garner newlyweds have two wagons of goods for a store and the men were told by the driver they have a $1000 in gold with them. The men plan to steal the gold and leave the train until Malloy steals a box thinking it has the money but instead he finds a family bible that changes his plans. The train is camped to make repairs before going over the mountains. While there Burke finds gold nearby causing a gold rush. It takes Adams a couple of days to convince most of the people to return to the train but Burke continues to plot to keep a few wagons there for their supplies. Burke has learned Malloy's secret and when Burke continues to plot to keep the Garners there, Malloy reacts violently leading to Burke fatally wounding him but not before he tells Adams his secret.

The Ben Courtney Story

Flint is taking the Ramsey and Pope families to an area near Bitter Springs to homestead. Flint expects problems because they are from Georgia and the Ramsey family has two orphan boys one of which is black. Sheriff Courtney has a bitter hatred for southerners and accuses the Ramsey family of keeping the black boy Daniel for forced labor. Some of the people in the town along with Flint try to change his mind but he is adamant about taking Daniel from them. Flint learns the Sheriff lost his first wife and a son he never saw in the war at Atlanta plus he lost the use of his right arm. Trying to stop the conflict the two boys decide to leave and climb into the high country with no supplies. The families and men from the town search for the boys and find them but it takes a surprising plea to the Sheriff to prevent further bloodshed.

The Ella Lindstrom Story

Ella Lindstrom and her seven children lose her husband to a mysterious illness on the trail. Adams offers to allow her and the children to return to Boston if they desire but the family agrees in their family meeting to continue west. She asks the Major to take her to Dodge City to see a doctor as she believes she is expecting her eighth child. Her seventh child cannot speak as she had the measles while pregnant with him. The doctor tells her not to worry about the pregnancy. He is concerned but not knowing Ella is unsure what to do so he locates Major Adams and tells him what he found. Ella leaves town early so Adams is forced to tell her himself that the doctor found she is not pregnant but has a growth that is fatal and he gives her 5-6 weeks. In a family meeting she tells the family the situation. They decide to go on to California and the kids will locate foster families on the train. Unknown to Ella her oldest daughter Inga has been seeing a young man James Fitzpatrick but since learning about her mother has been spurning him but giving him no reason. The Major talks to Ella about the youngest son Bo's future which is not settled. Adams is also faced with an angry Fitzpatrick and brings the issue to Ella and Inga which includes a special request.

The Last Man

With cold weather upon them, Flint is scouting for a shorter pass to get across the mountains. He encounters a crazed man and brings him back to the train. The man is starved and barely able to talk or respond. While continuing his scouting duties Flint finds graves and the man's camp which are the remnants of a lost wagon train. Ellen Emerson and her dad are on the train looking for the man she was to marry who was on the lost train so she wants to ask the survivor what happened to him. The man escapes camp and Flint finds him at his old camp burning a diary. Flint recovers the diary and returns with the man. Ellen reads the diary and learns that a man named George Danton had stolen food and had not suffered the starvation of the others. Upon learning this the members of the train want to hang Danton but Adams is emphatic they leave him to the law. During a delay due to a broken axle, the men want to lynch Danton.During the commotion Danton steals a revolver and shoots himself but not fatally. Flint discovers Danton left a suicide note in the diary which changes the facts.

The Old Man Charvanaugh Story

As Flint is about to take Mrs. Lerner and her two children to her husband, the train is met by Old Man Charvanaugh with what appears to be a wagon load of smelly uncured buffalo hides he wants to sell. Later, when Flint and the Lerners camp, Charvanaugh appears saying he is headed in their direction. After eating with them and playing music on his concertina he plays a particular song, a signal for his four sons to came out of the hollowed out wagon of hides to take Flint and the Lerners prisoners. After severely beating Flint and taking their shoes, the Charvanaughs leave them stranded. Flint leads them back toward the train but they collapse. Adams and Hawks find them when they go looking for Flint who is late. Once feeling better Flint goes alone to stop the old man and his sons. He catches up with them at a farm house where they are preparing to do the same thing to a husband and his wife. Flint tries to restrain the four sons but one breaks loose putting Flint and the couple in a precarious situation.

The Annie Griffith Story

Flint is scouting for an open pass as cold weather and snow are closing in on the wagon train. He is ambushed by a man wanting his horse and is wounded before he kills his attacker. He continues on but when he encounters a group of Shoshone Indians, he is wounded again and loses his horse. A woman finds him and drags him back to her cabin where she nurses him back to health. However, she wants to trade Flint to the Shoshone for money and passage out of the wilderness. Adams sends Hawks and Wooster to track down Flint but although they find the cabin and talk to the woman, Annie Griffith, she denies Flint is there or has been seen. Adams is facing a possible mutiny on the wagon train as Cleve Colter pushes to turn back. Annie learns Flint killed her husband and although Flint doesn't realize it, she has a change of heart.

Episode 22

The Jasper Cato Story

Jasper Cato asks Major Adams to join the wagon train as it crosses Indian territory. He is obviously from the east but says he is not wanted. Adams lets him join the train but has reservations. Cato stirs up the other members of the train with his snooping forcing Adams to ask him what he is up to. Cato says the man he is after has an inheritance waiting but he is not on the train. He gives Adams a description of the man which Adams recognizes but does not tell Cato. The next day as the train camps, he leaves the train to go to the next town to see Adam's godson whose father may be the man in question. When Adams confronts Jim about Cato, Jim tells Adams that he is the man and wanted for stealing $1,000. Cato followed Adams and tells Jim he is under arrest. However, Jim escapes knocking out Cato and tying up Adams. When Adams breaks loose and Cato wakes up, Cato tells his version of what happened. To their surprise Jim returns to take his punishment but there is still more to the story that Adams needs to know.

The Vivian Carter Story

Vivian Carter is given a send off by the wagon train as she leaves for Branton City to marry Bert Johnson she met in Boston. She spent most of her life taking care of her dad and has never married but the people on the train treat her as a young bride including an impromptu bridal shower. She is well educated, likes to read, and is well off financially. People on the train like her with especial attention from Christopher Webb. Before she leaves, he tells her he loves her and wants to marry her. Flint drives her to Branton City where they find Bert. Flint is intrigued by a beautiful blonde named Freda with whom he leaves returning with Freda drunk. When the four meet, Freda becomes irate and reveals she is married to Bert who wants Vivian's wealth. After fighting with Bert, Flint leaves to find Vivian who left town. He takes her to the train where it is apparent to everyone Vivian did not get married putting her in an embarrassing situation. People on the train try to console her. Christopher steps forward again to ask Vivian to marry him but sees that her frame of mind is not right to create the marriage he wants. Vivian has more to learn about people and it takes time.

The Conchita Vasquez Story

Flint is decoyed by a beautiful girl with a sprained ankle and captured by Comancheros. They want a wagon load of Army rifles the Major is carrying so they deliver a ransom note from Flint asking for the rifles in return for his life. When the daughter of the leader Conchita Vasquez discovers Carlos Soldareo killed her father, she helps Flint escape also believing her and Flint are in love. Conchita is accepted warily by Adams. She has trouble fitting into the new environment and when Flint tells her he is not in love with her, she decides to get revenge by changing sides again. After talking to Carlos, she tells the Major to use a pass that will make it easy for the Comancheros to attack the train. Adams believes her over Flint's objections. At the pass Adams and Flint are suspicious and decide to test Conchita's feelings as Flint checks the pass.

The Sister Rita Story

While resting, Flint is attacked by Ute Indians and sees a priest killed. He finds three nuns with two Mexican men helping them and several Navaho orphans camped nearby being attacked. They are on the way to the St. Joseph Mission to help the Indians. Flint drives off the Indians but one of the two Mexicans is mortally wounded. Once they help the wounded including Flint, Flint leads them toward the wagon train but his sighting of Indians forces him to take a different route to a water hole. The other Mexican leaves them during the night and the group is surrounded by the Utes. Flint notices that one of the orphans is a Ute and tells the Chief during a parley but the Utes want the Navaho orphans who are their enemies. The Utes decide the Ute boy will be sacrificed to kill the others. The boy's mother comes to her son despite the tribe's attempt to stop her. It becomes clear to all that their options have run out. Flint has developed a relationship with the young Sister Rita who has not completed her vows, while the oldest nun, Sister Joesph, decides to take her own actions during the night.

The Matthew Lowry Story

Jed Otis is a pain to Adams and continues to bully Matthew Lowry over Marian Pruitt who has eyes for all men. Matthew is a Quaker with one arm and a past only his much younger brother knows. Adams selects a route through a narrow pass but runs into a roadblock. Another wagon train is stalled ahead of them with cholera. They are blocked in by a landslide further ahead. Matthew who is a doctor willingly crosses over to help the sick. When he asks for his medical equipment, Jed Otis with support of others mutinies and takes control of the train from Adams and his men. The sick are doing better but Matthew believes open air would help them plus the water supply is running low for everyone. He sneaks back to the Adams train and frees Adams. Matthew fills Adams in on the situation and asks Adams if they can make the train "fly" to the top of the cliffs above. The Major states he has done it before. Adams takes control back of the train as Jed scared of the sickness shoots Marian who had crossed over earlier to check out the woman there who has Matthew's interest. Jed is taken prisoner but escapes hitting Benjy Lowry forcing Matthew to take Jed on in a fist fight with surprising results.

Vincent Eaglewood is a highly educated man on his way to teach at a San Francisco college. He is following the wagon train refusing to pay the Major forty dollars to join it. The train has stopped to repair defective metal rims on the wagon wheels. Vincent makes an offer to the Major to teach the kids during the stops to keep them occupied and it might enhance the Major's reputation on future trains. The children love him but his lack of practicality with his ideas finds him in trouble with the parents or the Major. The last straw is a tree he falls into the camp causing some members to run him off. The Major is not happy with the decision and when the children leave on their own to retrieve him, the Major and a group men go to return them and Vincent. They find Vincent but the children were captured by unfriendly Navajos nearby who want guns. Feeling responsible Vincent asks to go in first to obtain the release of the children - unarmed.

The Clara Duncan Story

Clara Duncan and the man who raised her, Clyrio Soriano, have come west to find his son a painter. They learned he was with the Adams wagon train the year before in an article written by Roger Garrett who is also a member of the wagon train. Clara wanted to marry Claude but a dispute caused him to leave and go west. Claude Soriano painted a lynching he witnessed and the painting was given a great review in Garrett's article. The men in the lynching have never been caught as the lynched boy was innocent. The father wants to find the painting of the lynching to display to show how great an artist Claude has become plus see his son. Garrett is immediately attracted to Clara and continues to help her find Claude even as she tells him she committed herself to Claude years ago. Claude often painted on both sides of a canvas to save on materials. A barroom picture of Clara has her thinking Claude is still mad at her. Roger buys it for her to remove it but it causes problems when the men at the lynching realize it might reveal their identity and that they must eliminate Claude as a witness.

The Duke Le May Story

A deputy arrives with a warrant for the fugitive Duke Le May who is with the wagon train. The deputy spots Le May and pulls a gun on him causing Le May to shoot and kill the deputy. Adams decides Flint should take Le May to turn him in to the law which is three days away. Flint reluctantly accepts the task as he is good friends with Le May. Le May makes an attempt to escape and finally succeeds while they sleep. Le May's horse throws a shoe forcing him to stop at the only occupied farm left in the area due to a severe drought. There he makes friends with a lonely boy, his older sister, and their pious father. Flint walks in later in the evening as they eat to take back his prisoner. Le May suggest they dig a well to supplement their fading cistern. He suggests dowsing to find water but they are skeptical. The next morning, the kids holding Flint at gunpoint decide Le May should stay to help find water. As they search for water, whose faith will be the strongest.

The Kate Parker Story

The Finleys are a young couple recently married still in their honeymoon stage while the Parkers are an older unhappily married couple. Chris Finley is a wanted man which Adams knows. Both are on Adams wagon discussing the issue when the Finley wagon has an accident paralyzing Evvie Finley who was driving the wagon. With the Finley wagon destroyed, they put her in the Parker wagon but are afraid to move her. Due to worry about snow the wagon train goes on to the next town leaving the Finleys and Parkers to wait for help to return. Kate Parker has a considerable sum of money with her. Her husband had been planning to leave her so he takes the money, wagon, and Kate leaving the Finleys stranded alone. A branch knocks out Jonas allowing Kate to escape but she falters in the cold snow. Jonas leaves with the money on foot the next day. Mountain man Boone Caulder rescues Kate. Kate soon learns Boone is an uneducated but wise man especially about men and women. Adams returns the next day with a doctor to find the Finleys buried in snow and no sign of the Parkers until Kate and Boone arrive.

The Steve Campden Story

When a snow storm closes the pass, Flint scouts a different route. He finds a man Lord Steve Campden and his son Steve Campden II abandoned by their guides preparing to climb the mountain the train is trying to get around. They suggest Flint join them to get a view of the area and maybe find an open pass. A storm hits as they climb so they enter a cave they find. Inside it is a different world with narrow passages, deep caverns, and strange animals. Lord Steve is forced to climb down to rescue Flint who falls onto a ledge knocking him out. While bringing Flint and Lord Steve up, young Steve lets the rope slip breaking Lord Steve's leg. They set his leg but are unable to carry him out. Flint leaves for help while the Campdens fight over whether Young Steve is brave enough to join Flint. Young Steve has always thought of himself as a coward while his dead older brother was the brave son until Lord Steve reveals the truth. Young Steve finally joins Flint as the two make it over the mountain to help. When they return for Lord Steve, Young Steve learns a larger truth about his father.

The wagon train has hit the mountains where the Major decides to take the northern pass to save 50 miles over the southern pass route which also has hot springs. The Major sent Flint and Hawks to scout the pass but only Hawks returns - with Flint's hat. The pass is snowed shut and search parties can find no sign of Flint. Next, Mr. Duncan disappears gathering wood. While tending a signal fire the Major disappears followed later by Hawks. The members of the train are in a panic with Wooster left in charge. At the panicked urging of the people and especially John Loring, Wooster heads the train back toward the southern pass. As they reach it, more people disappear. At the pass Loring takes Wooster prisoner leaving the train leaderless. At the kidnapper's camp Wooster notices no one knows how to cook and volunteers to take the job which Loring agrees to. Loring is taking the people as slaves and selling them to the Kootenay Indians in Canada. Wooster's cooking is a success but Loring warns Wooster the captives don't need eating utensils like forks.

The Jose Maria Moran Story

The train stumbles on a Pawnee brave staked out between two poles for death in the manner reserved by the Shoshoneees for their bravest enemies. Against Flint's advice, Adams cuts him down and returned to the train. He recovers enough at the train to take Mary Naughton hostage and speak until he learns he will come to no harm. They learn he is actually white and of Mexican descent so Don Luis Salazar volunteers to take care of him with the aid of Mary but against the wishes of many on the train including Mary's brother Jocko. His real name is Jose Maria Moran whose parents were Sapnish aristocrats in California and he has a significant inheritance waiting for him. Over time the train members learn Moran has a complicated background but grudgingly develop a respect for him while a relationship blossoms with Mary. Flint makes contact with the Shoshonees learning they want Moran or they will attack. Adams puts the options to the members of the train for their decision on what to do. Moran has his say as well.

The Andrew Hale Story

The train encounters an old man lost and dying in the desert. With rest and water he recovers and continues with the train helping as needed. They know little about his background but the Major notices he frequently handles problems successfully with no regard to the danger to himself. The train is plagued with several problems between members of the train often centered around photographer Elliott Garrison. The English baby is sick with a fever that soon attacks the Major. The stranger recognizes the fever as fatal without medical attention. He makes a native herbal remedy which breaks the Major's fever. When he awakes, Adams asks the man, Cain, to help run the train until the Major recovers. Two soldiers arrive looking for Andrew Hale, a minister, who left the train he was leading after he may have killed a member of the train. Cain ponders his situation and the next day during the Sunday services he tells the people the truth about his background. After the service the soldiers leave - without Hale but a message that his people want him back.

The Rodney Lawrence Story

As a young boy Rodney Lawrence's parents are killed by two white men. A single Indian finds him at the same time and raises him. Years later the Adams wagon train is stopped nearby due to Mrs. Elliott about to give birth. While with Flint, Mandy McCrea puts flowers on the newly marked grave of Rodney's parents. Later at the grave she briefly sees Rodney but Pete Galt drives him off. Rodney's foster father Ocheo pushes Rodney to rejoin his people but Rodney's experience in the past and what he observes on the train stops him. Rodney does, however, continually trade items secretly with Mandy sneaking by the guards and the McCreas. Keller and Galt plan to rob people's wagons and decide to blame Rodney for it. After theft of money from a wagon, Rodney's visit become a serious issue. In a meeting with Mandy, Rodney learns he is being blamed but Ocheo tells Rodney to seek out Flint about the issue. Galt shoots Mr. McCrea who catches him in the act just before Rodney rides into camp seeking Flint. Flint has Wooster guard Rodney but Keller knocks out Wooster and frees Rodney. Ocheo interrupting Keller and Galt robbing Adams' supply wagon is mortally wounded. Rodney finds Ocheo, learns what happened, and tells Mandy he is going after Keller and Galt to kill them. When Flint hears the story he goes after them reaching them after Rodney takes the men prisoner. Flint stops Rodney but Rodney is faced with a life alone or fighting his fears to join his people - and Mandy.

The Steele Family Story

Major Adams promised his Aunt Abigail to watch out for a widow, Mrs. Steele, and her four unmarried daughters on their way to California. The girls Faith, Hope, Charity, and Prudence range in age from 30 to 16. The girls are flirtatious without intending to be so and are causing problems with every man on the train - single and married. Adams is inundated with complaints from wives and trying to protect the girls. Mrs. Steele is on a mission to find husbands for the girls but her desires and the girls desires do not always mesh. As they near Lake Tahoe they attend a party sponsored by the wealthy single forty something Bill Dashwood. The oldest daughter Faith overhears Dashwood tell his nephew that he has no use for scheming women causing her to spurn his offer to dance and sparking his interest. They leave the party with Mrs. Steele in turmoil over her unmarried daughters. Dashwood and his nephew decide to pursue Faith and Hope on the train. It takes Prudence eloping to break the ice between Dashwood and Faith while Adams decides Jeremiah Collingwood needs an upgrade in appearance which changes Charity's attitude toward him. That still leaves Mrs. Steele unattached.

The Jenny Tannen Story

The infant Phoebe Tannen was given to her aunt to raise when her mother Jenny left her husband. Jenny became a renown singer in San Francisco until a freak accident massively scarred the right side of her face. Phoebe, now an adult, has worked her way across the country on Major Adam's wagon train to find her mother. Like her mother, she has a beautiful voice. Outside Sacamento Phoebe falls hitting her head on a rock causing partial blindness and headaches. Adams takes her to a doctor who says she will go completely blind in about a week. Adams takes her on ahead to San Francisco to find Jenny before Phoebe loses her sight. Jenny refuses to see Phoebe but when a man mistakes Phoebe's singing and looks for Jenny's, Adams is forced to take Phoebe to see Jenny. However, before entering the house Phoebe passes out and loses her sight. Jenny has to watch in silence as Phoebe tells the Major she realizes now her mother never loved her.
