The remaining brothers' Great Army's surprise attack on York is a bloody success, but mistrust grows, mainly between sadistic Ivar and Ubbe. Bishop Heahmund vows to spearhead the Saxon resistance, but the time isn't ripe yet. Captive in Kattegat, King Harald Finehair offers Lagertha an alliance by marriage, which she haughtily spurns before raping him in chains, only to find out too late that he had prepared men. The 'divine' currents beach Floki.

Floki explores the new land he has encountered. In Norway, Astrid tempts Harald with the possibility of her alliance while resisting his sexual advances. In the Mediterranean, Sinric advises Bjorn to appear as a trader with a few ships and not as a warrior in command of an entire fleet. In England, the Saxons led by King Aethelwulf and Bishop Heahmund attack York but are led into a trap. Aethelwulf's son Aethelred is wounded, and the Saxons are forced to retreat. Ubbe and Hvitserk propose a peace, but Ivar wants to continue the war. Aethelwulf seemingly accepts their offer, but Heahmund arranges to have the brothers humiliated. With Ubbe having lost face, Ivar secures his position as the leader of the Great Army. Ubbe and Hvitserk prepare to leave for Kattegat with their few followers; however, at the last minute, Hvitserk defects to join Ivar.

Guided by Bishop Heahmund's visions, the Saxons devise a battle plan. Ivar the Boneless strategizes on his own as the Vikings undergo increasing pressure. Bjorn Ironside finds himself in a new territory and must convince the local commander he is a trader and not a raider.

In York, Ivar and the Northmen hide in the sewage and surprise the Saxons. They defeat King Aethelwulf and make Bishop Heahmund prisoner. Meanwhile Floki returns to Kattegat and convinces many warriors to travel with him to the land of gods, a perfect place to live, despite the warning of Lagertha. Bjorn, Halfdan the Black and Sinric are welcomed by Euphemius in his camp after their long journey through the desert. But soon they find that something is wrong.

Episode 6

Bjorn, Halfdan, and Sinric fight and use the sandstorm to escape from Emir Ziyadat. Ivar and Hvitserk arrive at King Harald's kingdom to join forces against Lagertha. Ivar offers to spare Bishop Heahmund's life if he teams up and fights with him against Lagertha. Floki's plan is discovered, but Lagertha decides to let him go with his followers to the 'Land of Gods'. Astrid hires an abusive fisherman to send a message to Lagertha, informing her of when Kattegat will be attacked. Meanwhile, Bjorn is returning to his homeland with Halfdan and Sinric just before his brothers' battle for their home.

Episode 7

Bjorn returns to Kattegat in time to catch up with Ubbe and Lagertha and plan together the defense against Ivar and Harald while pondering conflicting loyalties. Meeting their auxiliary allies, the Sami, Bjorn falls in love with King Svase's feisty daughter, Snaefrid, who is allowed to decide for herself after a first night of bondage. Prince Alfred searches for his roots at the rebuilt abbey on Lindisfarne, shocking the abbot with his respect for the renegade monk and even raiding devil Ragnar. Ivar grows fond enough of warrior Heahmund to trust that he will use a precious sword gift loyally. Harald is elated when Astrid suggest she might be pregnant. Floki finally leads his flock to the 'divine settlement spot', which seems utterly unfit, but the geyser and poor chances to return home convince them to commit to years of toil in poverty.

Episode 8

When Floki proposes they build a temple to the gods, a few discontent followers protest. Meanwhile, Lagertha, Bjorn, Ubbe, and Halfdan propose peace to Ivar, Harald, and Hvitserk to avoid the battle and a slaughter of their people. Ivar refuses to agree, and the battle ensues.

After being defeated by Lagherta's army, Ivar and Hvitserk ask for help to Rollo that sends an army to help them. Bjorn visits his brothers expecting to make a deal but Ivar rejects to discuss. Bishop Heahmund has an encounter with Lagherta and offers to fight with her army. Meanwhile Floki faces problems with the settlers.

Episode 10

In Kattegat, the Seer calls Margrethe's ambitions mad and predicts that she will never be queen of Kattegat, dissuading her from murdering Bjorn's sons. As Ivar and Harald's troops battle Bjorn and Lagertha's, Hvitserk remembers Ivar accusing him of regret for his defection. Hvitserk faces Ubbe on the battlefield, who can't hurt his brother. Hvitserk kills Guthrum, and Svase and Bjorn's Sami wife, Snaefrid, are slain by Harald's warriors. Astrid gets initially reluctant ex Lagertha to kill her. Harald regretfully slays his 'life-satisfied' brother, Halfdan. As Ivar calls the Frankish reserves onto the field, Lagertha and Bjorn retreat. In Iceland, Floki offers to make Eyvind lawgiver in exchange for not starting a blood feud as revenge for Bul's death, but even the women can't get over vindictive blood thirst. When Thorgrim is found dead, Floki proposes himself to be sacrificed to the gods. Preparing to leave Kattegat, Bjorn finds Lagertha broken with her hair turned white. Rollo arrives home.

Episode 11

The new king of Kattegat Ivar is hunting down Lagertha, Bjorn, and Ubbe. Out of the blue, Rollo visits Kattegat to propose a deal to Ivar. The he goes to the place where Lagertha, Bjorn, and Ubbe are hidden and offers shelter to them and makes a surprising revelation to Lagertha and Bjorn. However Lagertha decides to accept the offer of Bishop Heahmund and go to England with him.

Episode 12

King Alfred asks Bjorn, Lagertha, and Ubbe to prove their loyalty and in the meantime grants freedom on his villa for them. Ivar decides to take Freydis as his wife, and she promises a son to him. Bishop Heahmund requests his position back to King Alfred, but he learns that it has been given to Lord Cuthred, who threatens Heahmund after discovering that Heahmund and Lagertha are having a love affair.

Heahmund discloses to King Alfred that Lord Cuthred was a traitor who was plotting to overthrow and kill him. King Alfred asks Ubbe along with his family to convert to Christianity to smooth things over in his court, and Ubbe and Torvi accepts the proposal. Floki faces problems in his settlement with another disappearance. Ivar the Boneless is convinced that he is a god and that Freydis' baby is his. He decides to make a sacrifice to the gods.

King Harald and his fleet are coming to Wessex. King Alfred asks Bjorn, Lagertha, and Ubbe to prove their loyalty and fight Harald. Aethelred participates in a scheme to overthrow his brother and kill Heahmund and the pagans. Floki has a vision of a spirit who indicates where her body is. The Seer sees the darkness coming. Ivar unsuccessfully tries to force the Seer to tell people that Ivar is a god.

In Kattegat, the insane and evil Ivar burns the Seer's corpse, covering up his murder. Bishop Heahmund has a dream and renounces his love for Lagherta in the name of God. Ubbe plans the Battle of Wessex, and the Saxons win King Harald Finehair and the Northmen but with one important loss. Meanwhile Queen Judith tortures one conspirator and finds who the leader that wants to overthrow her son Alfred is.

Episode 16

In Kattegat, Ivar learns that Harald was defeated in Wessex and plots to navigate with his army to loot the Saxons. Harald arrives at York, introduces Magnus and fight a group of rebels. Hvitserk learns Buddha's teachings from an Asian slave. Lagherta is missing and King Alfred keeps his word giving lands to Ubbe and Torvi; however, Bjorn decides to leave Wessex with Gunnhild to team up Harald to overthrow Ivar from Kattegat. In Iceland, Floki receives the starving Helgi that tells that his family is dying. In Wessex, Judith plots a scheme and poisons a conspirator.

Episode 17

In Wessex, Alfred learns that his brother died and later Judith tells him that she poisoned her son Aethelred. Alfred wants to lead his army, but Ubbe tries to persuade him to command the Saxon army instead. In Iceland, Floki witnesses what he has built with his madness and a family is slaughtered in a betrayal.

Bjorn marries Gunnhild under the disappointment of King Harald. Then he is sarcastic with King Harald. Fredy delivers the deformed Baldur and Ivar takes a surprising attitude. Hvitserk meets King Olaf to propose they join forces to go to Kattegat overthrow Ivar. Ubbe meets three Danish Kings and challenges one king that does not want to team up with him.
