Entry to Valhalla eludes Ragnar. As he lies in his sick bed in Kattegat, events unfold beyond his control. Bjorn orders the arrest of Floki for Athelstan's murder. In Paris, Rollo betrays the last of his Viking supporters to strengthen his position in the French Court. Meanwhile, in Hedeby, Kalf announces joint Earldom with Lagertha.

Ragnar struggles to decide what to do about his friend Floki in Kattegat. Bjorn tests his survival skills in the mountains. In England, King Ecbert and his son try to rescue the Queen of Mercia from an invading force. Rollo proves his loyalty to the French.

Bjorn continues his wilderness endurance brilliantly, killing a bear in close combat and ice diving naked, unaware vindictive Erlendur and Kalf hired a berserker to kill him. Rollo almost grows desperate when his wife, Gisla, publicly demands a divorce form the 'barabaric savage'. He is semi-appeased by the count with a monk as language teacher, except it doesn't go well. Kings Ecbert and Ragnar both have dream apparitions of dead Athelstan. Judith is delighted with monk-illuminator Prudentius's lessons to mix pigments. She gets Ecbert to agree to treat her 'as equal' when they become lovers again. They welcome Aethelwulf, who freed deposed Mercian Queen Kwenthrith and her 'heir', Ragnar's bastard Magnus. Judith confides to Kwenthrith that Alfred's biological father is Athelstan. Ragnar makes Helga tell Floki that their daughter died. Ragnar later cuts Floki loose.

Episode 4

The Yol log burns in the Great Hall in Kattegat, and though Floki must remain out in the cold, other visitors are welcomed, among them a Norwegian King and Bjorn, with a new partner. King Aelle visits Wessex for Christmas and is not impressed with how family relations are developing. In Paris, Rollo's future hangs in the balance, and he must win over his new bride, Gisla, as a Papal Delegation arrives to arrange an annulment.

King Ecbert, who feels he can't avoid eternal damnation for his earthly realm, Aethelwuf, who realizes Judith has been committing adultery, and Kwenthrith convince their reluctant ally King Aella that they must invade Mercia to take her throne back from usurpers. Bjorn grows even more suspicious of King Harald when Harald's brother Halfdan arrives with a fleet to raid Paris. Now that Rollo is Gisla's loving spouse, he takes charge of Paris's defense against his own people's next attack. The Count Odo's ambitious deputy Roland and his sister convince the weak emperor that Odo's own ambition may turn him into a usurper. Earl Kalf proposes to Lagertha, but she chooses their wedding day to fatally stab him as promised. Increasingly fixated on Yidu, Ragnar confides in her that he feels guilty about what happened to the settlement in England and is told that she's an imperial bastard by a concubine. Aslaug's crippled son Ivar, whom Floki minds, seizes an ax when barely included in a ball game to murder another boy.

Episode 6

Ragnor announces another raid on Paris at the Thing in Kattegat and although the fleet is battered by a storm after it sets out, the greatest challenge for the Vikings lies ahead in Paris, where Rollo awaits. Ecbert also has a journey in mind as he dispatches Aethelwulf and Alfred on a pilgrimage to Rome.

Rollo's defenses by river chain and archers-manned forts against the Viking fleet and infantry works brilliantly, allowing the French to ransack Ragnar's camp for a change, badly injuring Helga. Yet Count Odo tries in vain to discredit Rollo with the emperor, but Rollo warns that it's not over. Ragnar, however, is disheartened, desperate for more of his Chinese medicine, and indecisive. Erlendur claims Horik's ring isn't his. Ecbert leads the Wessex army to Mercia but is offered the crown without a war by renegade Prince Wigstan, who is tired of his mad family's bloody debauchery. Queen Aslaug's adultery with prophet Halbard is witnessed by Sigurd.

Episode 8

After being defeated by Rollo, Ragnar retreats, and his leadership is questioned by Harald. However, Ragmar stops the fleet and decides to lift the ships over a cliff to bypass the French forts by land and then return to the river to attack Paris. He asks Yidu for more drugs, leading to an argument in which Yidu threatens to expose his secret about the settlement in Wessex, and he drowns her. In Paris, Count Odo tells Charles that Rollo is not trustworthy, and then he meets Therese. She asks to chain him, and then Roland kills Odo. Rollo is promoted by Emperor Charles to Iron Hand of Frankia. Ecbert informs Kwenthrith that he is now the new King of Mercia, and she decides to stab him during the night.

Episode 9

The labors of the Vikings eventually bear fruit as, within sight of Paris, they re-launch their boats but this time along with some interesting structures that Floki has made. Aethelwulf and Alfred eventually arrive in Rome and honors are conferred by Pope Leo but relations are not so cordial in Wessex between King Ecbert and the disgruntled King Aelle.

Episode 10

While heading to Paris, the Viking fleet is surprised by a fleet of Frankish ships commanded by Rollo and there is a battle on the river. Ragnar is obsessed to kill Rollo, but the Vikings are defeated and retreats. Roland and Therese are executed in Paris and Charler salutes Rollo. Ragnar has disappeared for ten years and Bjorn and Auslag learn what happened in Wessex with the Northmen settlement. Bjorn tells his brothers and out of the blue, Ragnar returns to Kattegat.

Episode 11

Ragnar has a cold reception from his son and proposes they travel with him to Wessex to fix the settlement issue, but Bjorn plans on commanding a fleet to the Mediterranean Sea with Floki, Harald, Halfdan, and Hvitserk. Ubbe and Sigurd plan to stay in Kattegat to protect Queen Auslag. Ragnar visits Floki and tell him that he loves him. Ragnar then visits Lagertha to apologize. He invites Ivar to go with him, and his son accepts.

Episode 12

In Kattegat, Ragnar unburies his treasure with Ivar to buy ships and men to raid Wessex. Bjorn sails to the Mediterranean with Harald and Halfdan, and Harald says that he would never try to overthrown Ragnar. Lagertha tells Auslag that she would never forgive her for taking Ragnar from her. Auslag has a vision of Ivar drowning and tries to convince her son to stay in Kattegat. Ragnar and Ivar sail to England, but their ships capsize in a storm.

Episode 13

Ragnar, Ivar and a few Northmen survive the storm and reach the beach. The survivors blame Ragnar for the incident in the sea. Meanwhile Bjorn decides to ask permission to Rollo to sail along the French coast but he is imprisoned chained in a cell with the Viking leadership. Ragnar decides to kill all the survivors to head alone with Ivar to Wessex. Lagherta decides to attack Kattegt and overthrown Queen Auslag.

Episode 14

In Wessex, Aethelwulf arrests Ragnar and Ivar, and when King Ecbert returns, he has a long conversation with Ragnar. They talk about faith, God and gods, and Athelston, and Ragnar asks Ecbert to kill him. Ecbert refuses but agrees to deliver Ragnar to King Aelle and to arrange for Ivar to be taken home. In Kattegat, Lagertha kills Queen Aslaug despite Aslaug's renouncing herself as a queen in favour of Lagertha. Ubbe and Sigurd arrive in Kattegat, and Ubbe tries to kill Lagertha, but they are stopped by her warriors.

Episode 15

Ragnar has a private conversation with Ivar and asks his son to revenge his death attacking Wessex with no mercy and killing King Ecbert. Ragnar gives Athelstan's crucifix to Alfred and discloses to King Ecbert that Athelstan chose Christ before dying. Ragnar is transported in a cage to Northumbria and delivered to King Aelle who tortures him before killing him in a pit full of snakes. Ivar returns to Kattegat and his brothers tell him that Lagherta killed their mother.

Episode 16

Lagertha builds defenses to protect Kattegat. Meanwhile, Ivar plots to kill her. In Wessex, Aethelwulf discusses with his father the consequences of Ragnar's death and releasing Ivar. Bjorn and his fleet reach Spain, and together with Rollo, Floki, Harald, and Halfdan, they raid a Muslim town. Floki is intrigued by a mosque and orders the Vikings to spare the men that are praying inside the temple. They capture the women as slaves, and Helga brings a child with her. In Spain and in Kattegat, Ragnar's sons are informed by a black-cloaked figure about the death of their father.

Episode 17

Bjorn learns that his father is dead and sails back home, leaving Rollo that returns to Paris. Meanwhile Ubbe, Sigurd and Ivar gather a huge army to revenge Ragnar. However Ubber and Ivar decide to kill Lagherta before the departure, but Bjorn arrives and saves his mother. Judith tries to convince his father King Aelle to ally with King Ecbert warning that the Vikings are coming, but he refuses. Ivar asks Floki to invent something to help him in combat and Floki builds a chariot for him.

Episode 18

Ubbe marries Margrethe but decides to share her with his brother Hvitserk. Harald and his brother, Halfdan, plot with Egil to find weak points in the defense of Kattegat to invade later. Lagertha sacrifices Earl Jorgesen to the gods to bring victory in the invasion of England. King Aelle commands his army against the Vikings when he realizes the size of the enemy army.

Episode 19

Egil and his warriors attack Kattegat, but Lagertha and her army defeat the invaders and captures Egil. She tortures him, and he discloses that King Harald has paid his army. Aethelwulf forms a great army to defend Wessex, and they head to intercept the Vikings. However, Ivar plots a scheme to defeat the Saxons, and Bjorn follows the plan.

Episode 20

There is a battle between Vikings and Saxons and Ivar's strategy works, forcing Aethelwulf and the survivors to retreat to Wessex. King Ecbert decides to stay behind and abdicate the throne and proclaiming his son Aethelwulf King of Wessex and Mercia. Bishop Edmund stays with Ecbert that says goodbye to his family. When the Vikings arrive, they find the place empty and King Ecbert lures them, offering lands to the Northmen at East Anglia. In return, he asks to choose the way he would die. Floki grieves the loss of Helga while Ragnar's sons have an argument with tragic consequences.
