David and two of his college friends decide to steal a rival school's mascot before the game next weekend. However, they have problems when the vicious animal breaks out and runs loose in the house. Mark and Willie decide to put Sandy's details into a computer-dating organisation after she had a bad dating experience. She likes the man she was matched with but the boys embellished her life considerably, which makes it an interesting date. He has a surprise for her as well.

Michael has been randomly selected to redo his driver's licence test. He fails the test and has to redo the examination. David is upset with Mark and Willie for the loud music they were playing as he was trying to study. So, he plays a practical joke on them and convinces them to wear one sneaker to school. Sandy's solution to the boys is to ignore David but they have a better idea.They decide to try and convince him that his hair is falling out.

David has to forgo a camping holiday because he has to finish a paper by Monday but spends most of the time avoiding it. Michael is nervous about his first date since his wife had died and seeks the boys agreement. They're happy with it but he is still apprehensive about how it'll go. The date goes badly and from disaster to disaster.

Sandy and Michael visit their elderly aunt Mildred to convince her to move down to Florida to be with her daughter. The boys are cleaning the chimney when Dave manages to get Mark stuck in it. The fire brigade is called to get him out.

Mark is in love with a girl at school, but how to meet her? Michael suggests that he have a party and invite her. When she said that she liked to dance, Willie says Mark is a terrific dancer, which causes him a problem as he can't dance. To help him, Willie offers to teach him a few moves and then Sandy unsuccessfully tries to teach him a few more. When the party comes around, Mark keeps coming up with excuses not to dance. Sandy is coming down with the flu but has a hard time admitting it.

Willie is trying to get Mark to try a cigarette, which he doesn't do. Then Willie is caught smoking at school and Sandy tries to convince him that he shouldn't start smoking. She smoked in college and points out that it is an addiction very hard to break. Sandy has been studying very hard for a counselling exam and takes up smoking again to help her cope, and she has a hard time giving up again.

David tries to conduct a psychological experiment on Mark to see the effects of sleep deprivation. Sandy stops it but David convinces Sandy to be the subject instead. The results show that she is no longer the 'queen of the all-nighter'.

Sandy's secretary goes on family leave and Mrs. Poole volunteers to fill in. Mrs. Poole turns out to be remarkably efficient and leaves her own mark on the place. Mark and Willie are given a weeks detention and Michael thinks the trouble is caused by a boy they are keeping company with. Michael and Sandy meet the boy's mother, but she is disinterested until she finds out that Michael is a widower.

It's Martin Luther King Day and one of Sandy's former teachers comes to the Hogan home for dinner. He is from South Africa and talks about apartheid, which shocks his listeners. Will wants to go to a candle light vigil against apartheid.

Mark and Willie are on a school trip to an art gallery when they are astounded to see a nude painting of Sandy in an exhibition. It turns out the picture was painted by an old college friend of Sandy's. However, when she posed, Sandy was wearing clothes and the artist has put her head on somebody else's body. She decides to confront him when she hears that he is coming to Oak Park for the formal opening of the art gallery exhibition.

When Mark is not invited to a party with Willie he decides that he is not cool enough. He changes himself into a young James Dean and gets into trouble, both at school and at home. Sandy's car needs an oil change. Despite her misgivings, she lets Dave do it for her. Unfortunately, he is not a mechanic and the car ends up worse than what it was before. Mr and Mrs Poole are having a romantic weekend away, at a nudist colony.

David is desperately looking for a book he needs for an exam. He finds it on a table being used by a fellow student who refuses to let him have it straight away, which gets him angry. Rich sets him up on a blind date, who happens to be the same girl who had the book. Despite the date not going well, David decides to ask her out. Meanwhile, Sandy's ex-husband Richard is in town for his aunt's funeral, and Sandy and Michael are bewildered by how casually he's taking it.

The relationship between Sara and David has been going very well but then Sara is offered a position at an Australian marine science centre on the Great Barrier Reef. To stay together, David proposes to her. Michael doesn't think David is ready for marriage. Sara takes some time to think about it and decides she wasn't ready for it either.

Mrs Poole is staying with the Hogans for a few days and she brings with her a more basic lifestyle. David, Burt and Rich are heading to Las Vegas for a boxing match but they're easily distracted by the bright lights and pokies. Burt hits the jackpot with his first coin. With the winnings they decide to live the high life but are unaware of exactly how much they are spending and overdo it. To cover their debt, they decide to scalp the boxing tickets they have but get arrested. Sandy has to go Vegas to sort them out.

Dave has been reading his psychology texts and decides that he needs to go back to being the boys' older brother again. Michael wants Sandy to go on a blind date and she agrees, as long as he goes on one too, at the same time.

When Michael chastises David for not coming home one night, David decides that he would be better off living with Burt and Rich. However, when they all get together David finds that the grass is not greener on the other side.

Michael starts wearing reading glasses, which makes him feel old. Sandy then decides to throw Michael a surprise 40th birthday party with the help of the boys, and he doesn't cope well with all the 'getting old' jokes at the party.
Episode 19

David is threatened by a competitive hockey player. In their next game he seriously injures his competitor after considerable provocation. He puts him in hospital with a broken shoulder and hip. Despite being a legal check, David is very remorseful. Willie owes Mark some money for damaging his computer but buys a baseball signed by Ernie Banks instead. Mark decides to hold the baseball for ransom, gradually erasing the signature until the debt is paid.

Willie wants Mark to tutor his new girlfriend, Lisa, as she will be sent to a private school if her grades don't improve. Mark is reluctant to tutor her but does so, successfully. Lisa falls for Mark and dumps Willie, although Mark is not interested in her. David becomes sick, and everybody suffers as he is the world's worst hypochondriac.

Sandy's friend from Italy is coming to America to teach Italian at the boy's school with Sandy. The boys are initially reluctant, until they see how beautiful she is. David, in particular, is very smitten and he can't do enough for her.
