Perhaps with the exception of his sister Karen who set them up unofficially, Douglas and Connie were never obvious as a couple on the surface as the practical biochemist and the free-spirited artist, respectively. Regardless, Douglas is caught off guard when Connie announces that she believes their marriage has taken its course after they having been together for twenty-four years in that they no longer communicate with each other in a meaningful way. Still, she suggests that they proceed with their long planned three-week trip to the continent, their last blow-out as a family before Albie heads off to art college in the fall on the assumption that he is accepted, she believing it a good opportunity for father and son to connect which they don't now do in Albie being more like her. Initially retreating into his comfort zone of figuring "what's the point", Douglas changes his mind largely in believing that it gives him three weeks to change Connie's mind about the end of their marriage, his strategy to change into what she wants which may be easier for him to say than to do. While Connie is one aspect, he may not realize that that connection with Albie is just as important in how she views him within their marriage.
