Requiem

It's Christmas and Charlie has taken on extra seasonal work. Caroline is suspicious and wonders if he has got a girlfriend hidden away whom he is keeping. However budding sleuth Laura discovers he is trying to maintain his father's old home to keep it in the family. Caroline persuades him that maybe it is time to let go.

Common Entrance

When Jo's best friend Camilla is about to start at St Hilda's,the plush boarding school attended by Caroline,Jo wants to go too and passes the scholarship entrance exam. At the Open Day Charlie feels out of place amongst the wealthier parents and is unhappy about his little girl moving so far away from home. Fortunately for him Jo is equally unsure about leaving home.

When Worlds Collide

When Charlie's regular Friday night poker school venue is unavailable Caroline welcomes the lads to her house and amazes everybody by winning the pot. There is an even bigger surprise the next day when Caroline's supposedly uptight friend,the academic Emily,comes to visit and spends the whole day getting cosy with hunky bit of rough Eddie from the card school. Caroline and Charlie are shocked by this attraction of opposites but both parties are refreshingly realistic about their little fling.

Wedding Bells

Caroline's ex-husband Michael,a documentary film-maker living in the South of France is marrying his younger and not especially bright assistant Tiffany and,as Caroline has some work in the area she and her household travel down to the French Riviera. Everybody has a lovely time and Charlie persuades Caroline that she should attend the upcoming wedding though neither of them is prepared for Michael's announcement that he wants custody of Tom.

Wedding Bells II

On the eve of the wedding Caroline is still adamant that she will fight Michael's custody application for Tom. Tom himself,the best man,organizes a stag night with a difference with an unusual stag film and Laura popping out of a giant cake. Come the big day the little boy's throwing up on the bride's shoes settles matters - in Caroline's favour.

Cupid's Arrows

When Charlie agrees to partner Tom in a school golf tournament Tom's friend Toby declares that Charlie is Caroline's 'significant other' and should marry her. On Valentine's Day Tom sends Caroline and Charlie separate invitations to meet at a French restaurant in the hopes of getting them together. Back home they explain to Tom that they are fond of each other but not in the way he had hoped.

The Babysitter

Caroline and Charlie are off to a school parents' evening but Laura has a date so Jo persuades them that she can baby-sit Tom. Unfortunately Tom drops one of Laura's ear-rings down the sink so Jo gets Rick,the class hunk,to come round and retrieve it,prompting her envious classmates to turn up. Arriving home early Charlie is not happy to see a full house though Caroline is surprisingly forgiving.

Playing to Win

When Caroline gets a letter from Tom's teacher saying that he is too studious and should take up physical exercise Charlie trains him as a gymnast. With Caroline away on business Charlie,Laura and Jo go to support him at an inter-school gymnastic contest where Tom breaks his arm. Caroline blames Charlie but Laura makes her see that Tom has only inherited his mother's competitive spirit.

The Heiress

When Laura is left fifty thousand pounds by the late William Brookenfeld a suspicious Caroline is led to believe that her mother had had an affair with him whilst still married and is very angry. Laura admits to the affair but explains that she was very lonely because her husband was an alcoholic and that she confessed the affair to him and they made up,which leads to reconciliation between Caroline and Laura.

Episode 10

A Friend in Need

Dumped by her husband unpopular Diana Wilkinson descends on the house and,though Caroline does not like her,she feels sorry for her and lets her stay. She is greedy,selfish and untidy and the kids move in with Laura to escape her. Caroline is tolerant however - until Diana starts to throw herself at Charlie,a sign that it is time for her to go.

And the Winner Is...

With the star player indisposed Charlie is reluctant to take part in the inter-pub darts match but,following a pep talk from Caroline,not only turns up but wins a massive trophy. Ironic then that Caroline,who was expecting to win an award at a business ceremony,comes home empty-handed. Charlie tries to persuade her not to be bitter and takes her Shirley Grant,the winner's party - where Caroline gets satisfaction from letting down Shirley's tyres. Just as she is gloating over it Shirley delivers a sincere thanks to Caroline and invites her to share her glory.

She's My Girl

Tom has his first girlfriend Katie but,following Charlie's efforts to make her feel welcome,she develops a crush on him. An irate Tom demands Caroline dismiss Charlie and when she refuses he moves into a tent in the garden. He dreams of killing Charlie but is relieved to wake up and find it was only a dream and the guys becomes friends again.

Episode 13

The Anniversary

Charlie and Jo have been at the Wheatleys for a year and,with Laura and the kids going out for the evening,Caroline cooks Charlie a romantic dinner,during which he becomes violently ill. She fears she has poisoned him but he has appendicitis and is rushed to hospital. As he is wheeled into the operating theatre he tells Caroline he loves her. Next day,as he recovers, they both find it best to forget it that it was ever said.
