The Empty Chair

After 18 months of hard work by Eliot Ness and the Untouchables, Al Capone is convicted of tax evasion and sent to prison. It's only the start however for the law enforcement officers as Capone has left a fully functioning mob empire intact. Soon however, Capone's top enforcer, Frank Nitti, is eliminating some of his competition for control of that empire. In the process of fighting Nitti, Ness recruits a new member of the squad, one-time barber Enrico Rossi who had volunteered to testify against the crime boss after witnessing a shooting. Nitti's main competitor for Al Capone's empty chair is the mob's bookkeeper, Jake Guzik. Ness' plan is to create a rift between the two by focusing on Nitti's personal holdings and leaving the others alone. Guzik proves to be a far more intelligent opponent than Ness may have given him credit for so he tries to get a dead mobsters wife, Guzik's niece, to inform on the bookkeeper.

Ma Barker and Her Boys

Eliot Ness and the Untouchables are in Florida to arrest Ma Barker and her sons who are staying at a holiday motel under assumed names. With the aid of the State Police, they stage a raid but the well-armed Barker gang hold them off for over 6 hours. Years before, Ma Barker's sons had developed quite a reputation as petty criminals but her real career in crime started when one of them, Herman, was shot by a policeman during a break-in. Soon the Midwest is in the midst of a crime spree that included kidnappings and robberies. The family starts to fall apart when one of her sons, Doc, decides to get married. He leaves home but used currency from a kidnapping and Ness is soon on his trail. Ma Barker gives their location away leading to Ness' raid.

The Jake Lingle Killing

The Birch and Viale gangs are starting to encroach on each others turf and a gang war is on the verge of erupting. When a journalist, Jake Lingle, writes about it he soon finds himself dead. There is public outrage at the killing and the DA wants to keep it that way although it's obvious Lingle may have been a middle man between the mob and corrupt policemen. After a $25,000 reward is posted for bringing the killers to justice Bill Hagen, a self-styled detective but more or less a bounty hunter, tells Ness he will solve the case. Birch offers Hagen a better deal however.

The George 'Bugs' Moran Story

With Al Capone out of the picture appealing his recent conviction, the Untouchables focus their attention on the number 2 gangster in Chicago, George 'Bugs' Moran. Federal officers soon have Moran under 24 hour, seven day a week surveillance. Moran has recently kidnapped young Larry Halloran, even though the mobster know that the boy's father has no money. What Moran wants is to get control of the union the elder Lawrence Halloran is in charge of. It's only a small truckers union but Moran would be more than happy to strong-arm businesses to sign contracts with the union and in turn provide the mob with a nice steady income. With Eliot Ness away in Washington at Congressional hearings, Agent Martin Flaherty is in charge of the investigation but Halloran isn't prepared to take the risk of setting up the big-time mobster for an arrest. Halloran tries to make a deal with a local trucking firm but ends up in the hospital during which time Moran gets control of the union.

Ain't We Got Fun

With the end of prohibition in sight, mobster Big Jim Harrington is branching out and forcing the owners of successful night clubs to give him a majority share of their joints in return for letting them stay open. He also decides to hire an ambitious comedian, Johnny Paycheck, he sees at one of the clubs and promises to make him a big star. Johnny owes a lot to one of the of the club owners being forced out, Benny Hoff, but when Harrington's henchmen get rid of Hoff, Johnny re-assesses his priorities.

Vincent 'Mad Dog' Coll

After his attempt to kidnap Schultz's bookkeeper Lefty Gallagher goes awry, Coll decides to kidnap a horse Schultz has made a big bet on for the Kentucky Derby race that is still several months away. Coll comes by his nickname easily and will go to almost any lengths to get at Schultz. Ness and his men use that to their advantage.

Mexican Stake-Out

After Eliot Ness and the Untouchables have spent a year of putting the case together, the federal prosecutor is finally ready to go after racketeer Ted Newberry. Their prime witness, Julius Imbry, is under police protection and living in a hotel. Newberry's top gunman Jerry Fanning botches a planned hit but crooked politicians at city hall, as worried as anyone else about what might be revealed, arrange for Imbry to leave town. Now both Fanning and Eliot Ness head to Mexico to find Imbry and either kill him or bring him back for the trial.

The Artichoke King

The mob is out to take control of the wholesale distribution of produce in New York City and Eliot Ness and the Untouchable are brought in on special assignment to deal with it. The mobster behind it all is Ciro Terranova, the Artichoke King. Ness is convinced that Terranova was behind the recent killing of a legitimate produce distributor. Terranova's collector Frankie Yale killed the man and is also out to get of a piece of his boss' empire. They now put the arm on the dead man's son, Tony Cestari, to pay up but he turns to Eliot Ness for help. Terranova's solution to the Frankie Yale problem is to bring in a hit man from Chicago.

The Tri-State Gang

Eliot Ness and his team are brought in on special duty to deal with the Tri-State Gang operating in the Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania areas. They have been hijacking trucks and its leader, Wally Legenza, is quite vicious leaving no witnesses at the crime scenes. Legenza has a bad temper and he isn't too pleased when he learns that his top man, 'Big' Bill Phillips has a new girlfriend. This leads to a chain of events that eventually has Legenza broke and on the run. Desperation leads him to try and quickly get some cash and right into the arms of Ness and the Untouchables.

The Dutch Schultz Story

Eliot Ness and the Untouchables decide to try and convict New York mobster Dutch Schultz the same way they got Al Capone, through income tax evasion. Agent Marty Flaherty goes undercover working his way into the gang and learns that Lucky Luciano is moving in on Schultz's territory. When Schultz is charged, he successfully petitions the courts to move his trial to upstate New York where he charms the community eventually leading to his acquittal. While away from the big city however, Luciano has been even more aggressive and Schultz has to deal with him on his return.

You Can't Pick the Number

Eliot Ness and the Untouchables set their sights shutting down the numbers racket. The numbers are like a lottery where anyone can place a bet of up to one dollar on a three digit number. The payout for a full dollar bet is $600 so the profit for the mob, who run the racket, is the remaining 40%. Ness wants to shut down that cash flow which can be used for more heinous crimes. They think they may have an in when one of Al Morrissey's collectors is stabbed. Ness pressures Agent Marty Flaherty to make contact with Morrissey, an old friend who once saved his life. Before he can do anything, the Chicago police arrest Morrissey for gambling violations and Marty focuses on Al's son, Phil Morrissey but with little luck until his father pays the price for being connected to the mob.

The Underground Railway

In 1932, when the cruel bank robber Frank Holloway escapes from prison with the support of his lawyer Daniel Oates, he kills his fellow inmate that broke his legs while escaping. He meets Oates at his club, and finds everything prepared for his trip through the underground railway, a escape route for criminals, to meet Ed Johnson, who is keeping his two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from his last heist. Oates will receive half of the amount for his services. Oates asks his mistress Mona Valentine to be the companion of Halloway since the police is chasing a criminal, not a couple. She is impressed with his bad appearance but along their journey he goes to the dentist and to the plastic surgeon Dr. James Crenshaw, who change his appearance to a good-looking man. She falls for him, but he is interested in other woman since he is no longer rejected by the women. Meanwhile, Elliot Ness and the Untouchables are tracking Oates' phone number, and they suspect they have found his route. But now, only Mona knows Frank Holloway's looking since he killed the dentist and the surgeon.

Syndicate Sanctuary

With Al Capone out of the way, the mob is looking to relocate its base of operations outside of Chicago in a nearby community. Their first step is to get rid of the incorruptible mayoral candidate, Judge Leon Zabo, who they run down in the street. The Coroner's inquest is a sham and it is obvious that the Chief of Police, who appoints the Coroner, is already in the syndicate's pocket. Ness and his men move into the town intent on shutting the mob down before they even get started but the Untouchables find that they also have to protect the dead Judge's daughter, Rosetta Zabo, who has taken up his anti-corruption campaign.

The Noise of Death

When Eliot Ness and Agent Martin Flaherty raid a small butcher shop looking for illegal liquor, they find more than cheap booze: they find the body of the store's owner, Arturo Vittorini, in the meat locker. The dead man's wife Barbara accuses the neighborhood Mafia chief, Joe Bucco, of ordering the killing. Bucco denies having anything to do with it - the dead man was his wife's cousin - but is pretty sure his collector, Little Charlie Sebastino, is responsible. He also learns to his shock and dismay that the Mafia hierarchy has pushed him out and Little Charlie has been named as his replacement. Bucco strikes back and sabotages Sebastino's trucks but the Mafia sends him a message when they kill his driver and he knows that unless he backs off, he will be next. He gives Eliot Ness a present just in case he's knocked off.

Star Witness

When mobster Luigi Renaldo goes out of town, his enforcer, Paolo Rienzi decides to bring in a couple of out-of-town men to teach William Norbert, their accountant who tried to quit his job with them, a lesson. They administer a beating a severe beating and Eliot Ness is soon trying to get Norbert to cooperate with the Untouchables. Norbert isn't too keen at first but an attempted hit convinces him to testify against Rinaldo. Norbert has an amazing facility with numbers and essentially keeps the mobs books in his head. As their entire case rests on his testimony Norbert, along with his wife and daughter, are under constant police protection but that doesn't stop Renaldo from going after them.

Episode 16

The St. Louis Story

Two mobsters - Joe Courtney and Tim Harrington - are fighting it out to get control of the syndicate in St. Louis. Dink Conway, owner of the prestigious Jockey Club, tries to make peace between them but the hot-headed Harrington will have nothing to do with it. Conway soon dispatches his henchman, Whitey, to dispose of him. Soon after, Courtney robs a Postal truck carrying $1 million in bonds but Conway decides he wants the proceeds. Eliot Ness and a rookie agent, Cam Allison, are dispatched from Chicago to investigate. Working with various brokerage houses, they try to locate the missing bonds.

One-Armed Bandits

Mobster Augie Viale is out to start a new and lucrative business in the Chicago area: slot machines. They're not illegal so Eliot Ness and the Untouchables can't do a great deal about them but they know they provide the Syndicate with income that can be used to finance other illegal ventures so they take every opportunity to put Viale out of business. Ness visits Frank Odine who has just been released from prison. Odine wants nothing to do with the rackets but Viale forces him into the business by threatening to tell his daughter, who thinks her father was a hero who died in World War I, about his life. When Viale orders Odine to kill Ness, he can think of only one way out of his predicament.

Little Egypt

The Governor asks Eliot Ness if he can help wipe out the mob in a crime ridden area of southern Illinois known as Little Egypt. There, the local syndicate headed by Major Charlie Byron has killed the just-elected reform mayor and are clearly gunning to get rid of the honest Sheriff. Ness is a little pressed with most of his men working on a case in New York so he agrees to send in a new agent, Cam Allison, undercover to infiltrate Byron's gang. Allison is supplied with carrier pigeons to supply Ness with regular reports but his situation becomes dangerous when he's uncovered.

The Big Squeeze

Larry 'Ace' Banner is considered to be the creme de la creme of bank robbers. He plans his robberies meticulously, never uses a gun himself and the result is usually a large haul and little for the police to go on. With a huge increase in bank robberies throughout the Midwest, the Federal District Attorney, Beecher Ashbury, is just itching to do something about it. Unfortunately, he can't since bank robbery isn't a Federal offense. That doesn't stop him from asking Eliot Ness to see what he can find on Banner. The master thief has just completed a $450,000 haul - in part because he managed to blackmail the manager into giving him security information - and has now decided to retire to the good life of a wealthy bachelor. When the government finally makes bank robberies a federal offense, Ness waits patiently knowing that it is only a matter of time before Ace will strike again.

The Unhired Assassin: Part 1

Major changes are on their way, including the end of Prohibition, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected President in the fall of 1932. The Chicago mob, led by Frank Nitti, is out to get control of the upcoming Chicago World's Fair with it's lucrative concessions and other revenue streams. When they are unable to bribe the mayor, Anton J. Cermak, they decide to track his movements and assassinate him. They know he goes to same coffee shop every day at the same time so that becomes the obvious site for the hit. When Eliot Ness learns of the their plans, he races to save the Mayor. In Florida meanwhile, a mentally disturbed man, Giuseppe 'Joe' Zangara, decides to assassinate the President-elect.

The Unhired Assassin: Part 2

Although unsuccessful in their first attempt to assassinate Chicago's Mayor, Anton J. Cermak, the Capone mob under the command of Frank Nitti and several other of the imprisoned mobster's lieutenants, have not given up. This time they hire a professional, Fred 'Caddy' Croner, an expert at using a long rifle with a scope who carries his weapon in a golf club bag. They put him on a retainer until Cermak goes out of town and sure enough, they learn that the Mayor will be traveling to Miami to attend a public event in honor of the President-elect, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who is visiting the area before returning to Washington for his inauguration a few weeks later. Eliot Ness and the Untouchables are soon onto their plan and travel to Miami to protect Cermak. Unbeknown to them however, a crazed man, Giuseppe 'Joe' Zangara, has purchased a handgun with the intent to kill Roosevelt at the same public function.

The White Slavers

Prohibition is over but Eliot Ness and the Untouchables have a lot to keep them busy. They've been trying to shut down the mob-controlled prostitution business and raid one of the houses of ill-repute bun by Al Capone's former partner in the trade, Mig Torrance. Everyone in the house escapes - corrupt police tipped them off - except Mary Sage who is found dead in her bed, the victim of a self-inflicted overdose of heroin. Mig's kid brother was in love with the girl and is heartbroken at her death. Mig is also under pressure from his mobster-partners to increase his business and they tell him to hire Mrs. Buchanan, Mrs. B. to those in the business, the best Madam around. She has no interest in returning to the business she left 5 years before but when young Ernie Torrance asks her to recover Mary's body from the police, she meets Eliot Ness and agrees to work with him to close down the mob's operation.

Three Thousand Suspects

When Nick Segal's parole is turned, racketeer Nick Segal decides to get back at his partner Sam Argus who was supposed to make the parole went through smoothly. In Chicago, the two of them ran a gambling empire that generated profits of $1 million a month. When word gets out that Segal has asked to see Eliot Ness, he is killed by another inmate and as the Warden says, that leaves them with 3,000 suspects. Ness decides to recruit Tom Sebring, a prison inmate who still has six years on his sentence, with the promise of early parole if he helps them find Segal's killer.

The Doreen Maney Story

Doreen Maney and her boyfriend Sheik Humphries are responsible for a series of armored car robberies. In their most recent heist, several guards and one of the robbers are killed. With Sheik wounded, they head to Tennessee to hide out with Doreen's father and sister. The old man isn't to pleased to see them and their flight from justice - Doreen and Sheik have been dubbed the love birds - has been making front page news. Eliot Ness and the Untouchables are brought into the case and trace Doreen to Tennessee where they manage to arrest her. She has no intention of turning Sheik in but her younger sister Maybelle sets her sights on Sheik and when he reciprocates, Doreen decides to turn the tables on them.

Portrait of a Thief

Eliot Ness and the Untouchables have put a sizable dent in Al Capone's operation but they now find that legitimately produced alcohol is making it's way onto the illegal booze market. With the help of the Federal District Attorneys in Chicago and New York, they trace the liquor to Brawly Mills, a major food and beverage manufacturer located in the city of Brawley, New York. The president of the company, E. Carlton Duncan denies any wrong doing, as does his senior executive Brooks Wells. Ness however finds a connection to bootlegger and criminal Johnny Torrio who the agents recently killed in a liquor raid. Looking for any definitive tie between Duncan and the mobster, he finds that Duncan and Wells are actually assumed identities and that they may have met Torrio in prison fifteen years before.

The Underworld Bank

With the end of Prohibition in sight, mobsters start looking for other ways to keep the money rolling in. Milo Sullivan suggests to his New York associates that they get into the banking business of sorts, providing thieves with the capital they need to pull off a string of robberies. After a million dollar fur robbery, Eliot Ness and the Untouchables are assigned to the case and they focus on trying to get one of the mobsters to cooperate with them. They put pressure on Tony Zagano, who's been living off his loan until he pulls his next job. When the bank gives him 3 days to pay back the loan Tony, realizing that he will be killed if he misses the deadline, turns to the Feds for help. Too late for Tony however when Ness fishes him out of the river. Sullivan makes a major mistake however when he shortchanges Duke Mullen, the man who led the fur heist.

Head of Fire: Feet of Clay

After many years, Eliot Ness meets up with an old high school friend Frank Barber who now runs the professional boxing matches locally. One of Barber's main customers is mobster Johnny Fortunado who Ness has been pursuing for a long time and only recently got off when the key witness against him supposedly committed suicide. Ness is worried that his old friend is mixed up with the mobster but Barber insists that Fortunado is just a customer. Ness wants his friend to give him information on the mobster. He soon does so when Fortunado starts to gun for him but evidence begins to mount that Barber may be staging the whole thing.

The Frank Nitti Story

With Prohibition a thing of the past, mobster Frank Nitti focuses on something the mob knows how to do very well: extortion. The gangster focuses on the movie distribution industry, specifically theater owners. After blinding the owner of two theaters in Chicago as a warning to others, he sets his sights on the Star theater chain with ticket sales of $100 million a year. The head of the chain, J.N. Miller has no choice, as he sees it, but to give them what they want. A check of the company's books however, gives the Feds all the information they need to get Miller to cooperate. Ness also focuses on a Nitti associate, Sydney Rogers, to get the good on the big hoodlum. In the end, the mob and Ness take care of Nitti but the cost is high as one of Ness' men is killed.
