A commercial airliner makes a normal landing at an airport and taxis to its normal stop. The only problem is that when the doors are opened, there are no passengers and no pilots. An experienced FAA investigator, Grant Sheckly. is assigned to the case. Sheckly has a good reputation and good track record at solving crashes but this case is a difficult one explain. It all begins to get clearer when he realizes that not everyone is seeing exactly the same thing. For some the seats are blue, others see brown and others see red. They all see different registration numbers on the aircraft. Sheckly can only come to one conclusion: what they are seeing is an illusion.

During a dinner party, there is an emergency announcement on the radio that unidentified objects have been sighted en route to the US and they may be under attack. As the Stocktons prepare to use their shelter their neighbors panic asking to be let into the shelter with them. Stockton refuses, leading to an angry confrontation.

On a dirt road, a Confederate Sergeant stops at a farm owned by Lavinia Goodwin to have a drink of water at her well. They strike up a conversation and Lavinia tells him that her husband, also a Confederate soldier, has been killed in battle. He entertains her with his guitar and they recall life before the war. A neighbor, also walking down the road, appears but it's apparent that no one knows what they will find when they get to the end. She is then surprised by two unexpected travelers.

They agree to a game but Fats warns his eager opponent that winning has its consequences as well.

In their celebration he belittles the former leader, General De Cruz, who warns him that now that he's in charge, he'll find that he has much to worry about. Particularly about those who who might plot and try to overthrow him. De Cruz points to a mirror in his former office and tells Clemente it will show him the image of his killer. Soon, it seems everyone is out to get him.

He feels like he's wasted that four months and someone bets him $20 he hasn't the nerve to visit the dead man's grave. He takes that bet and has little difficulty going to the grave. Leaving it, however, proves to be another matter altogether.

The community is cut off from the outside world and the boy insists that those around him think only pleasant thoughts, and if they don't, he eliminates them. Everyone walks in fear of the lad who ably demonstrates what he's prepared to do at a small party in his home.

Gunther Lutze, a former captain in Hitler's SS, decides to return to the area that contains the remnants of Dachau concentration camp. As he revels in the memories of the days when he had tortured prisoners, prisoner Alfred Becker appears before his eyes. What he does not realize is Becker is a ghostly apparition, and plans to put Lutze on trial for crimes against humanity for the torture and killing of the prisoners that were held in the camp. It is one trial Lutze may regret.

They panic when an intruder breaks into Norma's apartment and holds them, at least for a few moments, at gunpoint. All is not as it seems however.

He learns from an old man that being a male witch he cast a spell on them using his book of magic. The old man sees the Yankees as invaders and is keen that the South win the war. Anticipating that he is going to die by sunset, he gladly gives his book of witchcraft to Paradine to support the cause. When he returns to camp, Paradine's commanding officer is far more concerned about the battle they will enter into the next morning than about the book his Sergeant has in his possession.

Alan Richards and his wife are back in New York after living in Africa where he was in charge of a major construction project. His wife was deeply affected after a local witch doctor placed a curse on them and has taken to keeping charms to ward off evil spirits. While Richards doesn't discount the power of the witch doctor entirely, he dismisses her fears as unfounded. Having a drink in a bar one evening he finds that his wife left a protective amulet in his coat pocket. He leaves it on the bar when he leaves - and as a result has a dangerous and frightening walk home, only to find something there waiting for him.

In 1890, janitor Woodrow Mulligan uses his employers' invention to transport himself to the future. He imagines an Eden but finds a polluted, busy world that he doesn't find at all attractive. He meets Rollo who is also disgusted with the world he lives imagining life in the 1890s as idyllic. When Woodrow goes back to his own time Rollo goes with him but he is soon bored without any of the conveniences of modern life.

An Army major wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings, a large cylindrical-shaped room, open at the top but with no other way of leaving. He soon learns that he is not alone in the cylinder. There is also a clown, a ballerina, a hobo and a Scottish bagpiper. The others have been there for a while and are seemingly resigned to their fate. The Army major organizes them, however, they form a human ladder to get to the top. Their first try ends in failure but the second attempt is more successful. Sort of.

On August 6, 1945--the last day of World War II--a forward platoon acting as artillery spotters get an eager and aggressive Lieutenant Katell. The artillery has been unable to dislodge a Japanese unit from a cave and Katell decides that the unit is going to attack. He suddenly finds himself in 1942 however, leading a Japanese unit that is about to attack Americans who are holed up in a cave. He looks into a mirror of sorts when his Japanese superior orders the destruction of the American stronghold. When he flashes back to 1945, he has second thoughts about the attack.

She's basically a shut-in, never leaving her place with groceries and the like being delivered by a neighborhood boy. The reason she lives like is that she's convinced the personification of death will come and take her away. She's not sure what form death will take and so shuns contact with anyone. When a young policeman is shot just outside her door, she has to decide whether to help him.

All three have had a major influence on his life, though not the kind that made him a success. His former military commander had him court-martialed; his former teacher ridiculed and humiliated him in class after she caught him cheating; his church minister ruined his reputation after he drove a girl to suicide. All he requires of them is one thing: a brief apology. The impact of what they've done to him is far greater than it appears.

When he gets home however, he and his dog are invisible to everyone around them, Rachel is dressed in black and it's apparent that he's died. Thus begins Hyder's journey, one that presents him with choices.

He's given a dose of reality however when he inexplicably finds himself back in time, coming face to face with the real Jesse James.

Ben is worried his friend will end up in the loony bin but it's Ben who is in for a surprise.

Chambers is an encryption specialist and they try their best to decrypt a book the Kanamit left behind. The book's title seems benign - but it's not what they think it is.

He knows everyone there but like his wife, none of his co-workers have any idea who he is. He's desperate to find one piece of his identity to prove who he is. When all finally seems resolved, he faces another shock, but to say more would spoil the ending.

Soon, he is being recognized by them as a god and refuses to leave when the ship ready. He is to realize that one's place in the universe is a relative thing.

The agent suggests he seek psychiatric treatment but it turns out he's right.

As he tells it, he holds doctoral degrees from several universities and his advice to Henry Ford helped create the American auto industry. His friends always have a good laugh, but two visiting strangers take a keen interest in Somerset upon hearing some of his more outrageous claims. The visitors are aliens who are convinced they've found a remarkable human specimen to take back to their home planet. Somerset wants nothing to do with this plan and, to his surprise, finds the instrument he needs to make good his escape in his pocket. This experience with visitors from outer space gives rise to yet another tall tale with which to entertain his pals at the store.

He also says he has a gift for the people of the Earth, but the villagers' fear means that mankind may never benefit from the alien's generosity.

Jerry decides to lock Willie in a trunk and try his act with a different dummy. Willie has plans of his own however.

Her rejection of the new member of their family will have serious repercussions but also lead to closure.
