Episode 1

A title card informs the viewer that Sir John Franklin's Arctic expedition of 1845 to find the Northwest Passage was never seen again. In the opening sequence set in 1850, Sir James Ross and his translator are speaking to a Netsilik man in a tent who encountered the expedition's last survivors under the leadership of Captain Francis Crozier. The man informs Ross and his interpreter they were heading south overland and pursued by a creature called the "Tuunbaq". The man informs the two Crozier is dead but before he died, asked the man to tell those who may come looking for him that the ships are gone, there is no Northwest Passage, and that he along with his men, are now "dead and gone."

Episode 2

In Spring 1847, after a winter stranded in the ice, Erebus and Terror remain stuck. Sir John Franklin sends out sledge parties to find open water leads through the ice. In the past, Sir John and Crozier had once been friends, but in England Sir John had denied Crozier permission to propose marriage to his niece due to his Irish background, and Franklin's refusal to see any other point of view than his own regrading the current situation causes their relationship to deteriorate further. The sledge party sent out to deliver a message to a cairn on King William Island accidentally shoots an Inuit man one evening mistaking him for a polar bear. As the men scramble to rescue the Inuit man, a massive, unseen creature kills their officer.

Episode 3

The British bury the Inuit man in the sea through a fire hole in the ice, and his daughter, nicknamed "Lady Silence" due to her refusal to speak with them, sets out to return to her people. Crozier requests Sir John Franklin about sending out a sledge party on foot to seek help but Franklin rebukes him believing there is no need and stating he is adamant on not losing anymore men while Crozier expresses concern all their men may be lost. Franklin then scolds and degrades Crozier regarding his alcoholism, depression, and insecurities stating they were never meant to be friends or family. Intending to take matters into his own hands, Crozier begins drafting a resignation letter planning to lead the party himself and leave later that evening.

Episode 4

By November 1847, there is some concern regarding the fate of the expedition and Sir John's wife and his niece try to pressure the Admiralty in London to send out a search and rescue party. Sir John Ross shares their belief that the ships might be trapped in the ice but the rest of the Admiralty does not and refuses to organize an expedition. Angered by their inaction, the two women decide to fund a ship for themselves.

Episode 5

The weather outside the ships continue to worsen with severe storms and temperatures reaching minus fifty two. On board Erebus, Goodsir speaks with Lady Silence in an effort to learn her language but has little success learning about the nature of the creature. Crozier becomes temperamental as his liquor supplies run out and sends Lieutenant Edward Little to pilfer bottles of whiskey from the private stores of Captain James Fitzjames aboard Erebus.

Episode 6

In January 1848, the expedition's supplies are starting to run out. Now in charge of both Terror and Erebus, Fitzjames plans to abandon the ships and lead the men back to civilization on foot come spring. Blanky advises him to soften the blow of this news, so Fitzjames organizes a carnival on the ice to boost their morale and reasoning that they have more food and drink than they would be able to carry. Goodsir begins feeding Sir John's pet capuchin monkey to test a theory he has about the canned food and discerns that the poorly soldered cans are giving the men lead poisoning. He attempts to warn his superior, Dr. Stephen Stanley, who appears to brush the news off at first but reassures Goodsir that he will inform command and take care of it.

Episode 7

A flashback sequence set in 1845 shows various men joining the Arctic expedition. One of them is a young man named Cornelius Hickey who has never been seen before in any of the previous episodes. On April 22, 1848, Captain Crozier gives the order to abandon both ships. While most are optimistic of the captain's plans, some are skeptical and express belief that abandoning the larger group to create a smaller and more mobile one would give them a better chance for survival. Crozier leaves a handful of men behind with enough supplies to last through winter and instructions on what to do if there is a thaw and the ships are able to break free from the ice. Crozier and Blanky bid farewell to their ship and the order is given to depart on foot.

Episode 8

Captains Crozier and Fitzjames walk to the cairn visited by Lieutenant Gore the year before and update the message there. Afterward, Fitzjames opens up to Crozier about his troubled personal life including his illegitimate birth and how he joined the military seeking personal glory. Crozier appreciates his honesty and the two put aside their past differences and bond as brothers. Upon returning to camp, they discover the alarm bells are ringing. One of the officers reports to Crozier that Hickey told him and his hunting party that Lieutenant Irving and the petty officer were killed by the Netsilik, so his hunting party killed the Netsilik family in retaliation. Crozier is skeptical of the story and orders Hickey to take him and others back to the alleged murder site.

Episode 9
Thu, May 10, 201856 mins
In London, Charles Dickens is speaking at the London Cultural Society and introduces Sir John's wife Lady Jane, who speaks with the audience regarding the missing expedition and how she would like donors to finance a rescue party. Back at camp, the men are recovering from the Tuunbaq's attack earlier and, despite the large number of dead and missing, continue to move south. Fitzjames tries to tow one of the sledges along with the men but collapses due to his worsening health; Crozier has him ride one of the sledges instead.

Episode 10
Mon, May 21, 201854 mins
An injured Crozier is brought to Hickey's camp where they speak briefly and Hickey requests Crozier's injuries be tended to by Goodsir. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Edward Little tries to organize a rescue party to help Crozier but the rest of the men refuse and instead continue to keep moving south. Goodsir speaks with Crozier regarding the current situation and Crozier tries to reassure him things will be alright, but Goodsir is despondent. He informs Crozier that when he's dead and his body is to be consumed, eat only the feet, preferably the soles if possible. Hickey summons Crozier and they discuss the nature of the tuunbaq, and Hickey admits Crozier is his equal; he thanks him for that.
