Madge, a friend of the Saint, has recently married an ex-actor and unsuccessful theatre producer. Following his latest failure there's an accident which almost kills her. Simon goes to visit, but is prevented from doing so. It seems Madge's husband's been married - twice - before, both were heavily insured, and both died under suspicious circumstances. Now, the only one to have contact with Madge is the elderly housekeeper her husband's hired. and unless Simon can do something, Madge will benumber 3.

In Switzerland, the Saint meets a young man, who's unhappy his father and stepmother are emigrating to America. When the young man's father is killed and his briefcase stolen, his wife offers Templar a reward for the retrieval of the case. Simon finds the case, which is full of jewellery.

SPOILER ALERT: Simon Templar is visited by Joss Hendry, whose fiancé, Brad, disappeared in Mexico three years earlier trying to find the oyster beds of San Domingo. She has recently heard from Brad saying he has the pearls. Joss asks Simon to accompany her. Templar discovers that Brad is blind, following a brutal fight with a former cohort who was a crook and stole their money. Brad is now dependent on the plain but adoring Consuelo, who feeds his delusion that he's actually located valuable pearls.
