A mysterious U.S. industrialist, Mr. Alexander, steals a new type of nerve gas from the U.S. Army. He leaves behind a small tablet with the number eight on it. Solo and Kuryakin investigate, with the help of Alexander's ex-wife Tracey, who seeks Alexander to sign her final divorce papers. The trio finds Alexander's parents working like slaves at a Greece rock quarry with the number five painted all around. After freeing the parents (and avoiding Alexander's thugs), they travel to a temple where they are captured by Alexander. It turns out Alexander plans to take over an Asian nation, breaking each of the Ten Commandments along the way.

Solo, Kuryakin and Tracey escape Alexander's death trap. The scene shifts to Washington and Virginia. Alexander breaks commandment No. 7 by seducing a prince's wife. Solo is menaced by a muscular thug while Kuryakin is endangered by employees of Alexander's farm in Virginia.

The Magnificent Merlin, a nightclub magician in Paris, has developed an electronic mind translator. He offers it to U.N.C.L.E. who becomes highly interested after Merlin demonstrates he can successfully read sensitive information from Ilya's mind. Senior THRUSH operative Victor Marton hears of the device and covets it after Merlin reads his mind, too. Waverly realizes this, so he sets up Mimi Doolittle, an innocent American tourist who had substituted as Merlin's assistant for his final performance, to appear as the courier to bring the machine to U.N.C.L.E.'s New York labs. Napoleon is blindly sent as a recognizable U.N.C.L.E. agent to intercept her luggage and complete the deception. Lucia Belmont, one of Marton's rivals for THRUSH status, grabs Napoleon. Later, they go after Mimi and snag Ilya as he tries to protect her. Meanwhile, Ilya's partner Cantrell takes the mind translator to Canada via a commercial flight. From there he will charter a private plane and bring it to New York. Belmont uses sodium pentathol-plus to worm the arrival time and destination for Cantrell's plane. Napoleon and Ilya must coach Mimi to use her undeveloped feminine wiles to distract a guard so they can escape. Marton's plastic explosive handkerchief plays an unexpected role.

They discover that the region's ruler, Prince Panat (Lee Bergere), and ex-Army officer Col. Quillon (Alan Caillou) are destroying the people's homes and using them as forced labor in the Prince's ruby mines.
