Isaac (Ted Lange) is on vacation and decides to go on the cruise, as a passenger. He acts like a jerk and hooks up with another passenger (Lola Falana) and doesn't tell her what he does. Among the other passengers is a woman (Donna Mills), searching for her birth mother, who is also on the cruise, and she wants to go see her but is too afraid to. She meets another passenger (David Birney) and they hit it off. A rich girl (Barbi Benton), who just got dumped at the altar, is very mean and Doc (Bernie Kopell) sets out to help her. A couple (Edie Adams and Avery Schreiber) who are in a rut and are considering separating. An old woman (Audra Lindley), who is not all there. Stubing's (Gavin MacLeod) Deputy Captain (Dick Martin), is there to be groomed for when he's made Captain but he's a bit incompetent. When the deputy captain gets a message that there's a hurricane coming, he's suppose to give it to Stubing but runs into the old woman (Lindley), who is lost and he uses the message to draw her a map and she takes the map with her and he forgets about the message. Stubing decides to go to an island and the rich girl, the couple and old lady join him, along with Doc, Gopher (Fred Grandy) and Julie (Lauren Tewes). But when they get there, they find a hermit (John Astin), who holds them captive.

The crew suspects he's faking but, unless they can get him to stand up, they're at the brothers' mercy. And, the one pretending to be injured (Bono), is attracted to a fellow passenger (Judy Landers).

But his then-close friend Jack Forbes (John Rubinstein) is now afraid to talk to Mike, because Jack was a draft dodger during Vietnam and feels overwhelmed by guilt. Doc (Bernie Kopell) has seen physical education teacher Bitsy Sheridan's (Conchata Ferrell) picture in the school's yearbook and is anxious to meet her, but gets a surprise when she boards the ship; Bitsy has gained weight in the last ten years. A woman named Wendy (Kim Darby) has an anonymous admirer who sent her the ticket to take the cruise, so she spends time on the cruise trying to figure out who the admirer is. Julie and her old flame Joey (Michael Lembeck), who is now a disco dance teacher, rekindle their romance to the chagrin of former head cheerleader Sherry (Lisa Hartman), who stole him away from Julie in high school and is now Joey's dance partner. Former high school thespian Ross Randall (Christopher George) has become an acclaimed actor on an action-oriented television series. An alum named Tom (David Landsberg) has opened his own office and is trying to save money, so he doesn't take the cruise but stops to see everyone off at boarding time.

But when Gopher (Fred Grandy) calls him away from her to handle a medical emergency, Bitsy thinks Doc is rejecting her because of her weight. Wendy (Kim Darby) continues searching for the anonymous admirer who sent her the ticket to take the cruise. After Sherry (Lisa Hartman) asks Julie (Lauren Tewes) not to pursue Joey (Michael Lembeck), Gopher and Isaac (Ted Lange) convince Julie to renew her efforts at rekindling the high school romance.
