When the police arrest a gang of opium smugglers on the banks of the Thames, Inspector John Marlott makes a shocking discovery in the form of the body of a dead child washed up on the shore. He is ordered by Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel to lead the investigation, however details must remain confidential.

Episode 2

After his discovery on the banks of the Thames, Inspector Marlott visits the house of artist and printmaker William Blake, who is on his deathbed. Later, Marlott confers with Nightingale, a local policeman who has been keeping watch on The Fortune of War, a public house where body snatchers are known to gather. The pair create a plan to capture a person of interest who may be able to aid them with their investigation.

Marlott reads Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' with its reference to stitched up corpses being revived by galvanization but she is unable to help his investigation. He also learns that Flora is pregnant and places her in a charitable hospital run by Sir Daniel Harvey, a disillusioned former medic, a critic of Chester and brother of the religious Lady Jemima. Pritty is apprehended trying to leave London and agrees to lead Marlott to the murderers through a dark tunnel.

Episode 4

Marlott meets the Bishops gang and pretends that he wants to buy a young girl from them before returning home to find that Flora has miscarried and wants to stay with him. After asking Sir Daniel why Chester lied about his involvement with galvanism he baits his trap using Flora and manages to apprehend the Bishops and Billy to save the unconscious Flora. However Mrs Bishop denies that her gang kill children and Peel wants further evidence to prove that murderers do business with surgeons. Meanwhile journalist Boz writes a newspaper article about the case and Mary Shelley makes a disturbing discovery at Chester's work-shop.

Episode 5

After seeing Boz's article Mary confronts Chester, escaping his attack on her and telling Marlott of his earlier, deadly experiment in galvanism. Though Peel takes him off the case Marlott, following Mary's information, arrives at Garnet Chester's house, from where he rescues Flora and later persuades Billy to denounce him in writing. Garnet's apparent suicide seems to incriminate him but Marlott is not convinced that he took his own life.

Episode 6

Having assumed that Chester killed his cousin Marlott now realizes that Daniel Hervey is the perpetrator of the grisly series of crimes though Lady Jemima disbelieves him. Marlott tracks Hervey down, freeing Alice, but is overpowered and wakes up at home to a shocking discovery. Framed for murder he is sentenced to hang and death seems certain. Only Jemima can save him.
