Joshua Hawks, who is standing for public office, rides into town and accuses the Nick Barkley's family of stealing land and all produce grown on it illegal. Jarrod is concerned at Hawks' actions, and knows suing the man will do more good for Hawks than the Barkley's. His campaign manager Frank Wesley risks dismissal when he challenges Hawks tactics, but ultimately agrees to go along. The Barkley's face further pressure as buyers start to fall off when there is doubt over the produce grown on their farms. A fire at Hawk's hotel is blamed without evidence on the Barkley's. The tension grows as Hawks requests a meeting with Victoria Barkley. He proposes a truce, but she rejects the idea. He then reveals he'd known the Barkley's when her husband was still alive and used to work on the farm. A special governors meeting is planned and Frank is appalled to discover Hawks plans to blow up the town hall killing the Barkley family. The local shop keeper who sold the explosives becomes suspicious and warns Nick. He in turn meets Hawks at the town hall, where Hawks is wounded in a gun fight. Suddenly remorseful Hawks warns the others about the explosives, they escape but he is killed in explosion

A wagon traveling through the night loses a wheel. While doing repairs a stranger rides up an offers help. Sabrina Lynn passenger sees him and rushes off into the night, only to drop in a dead faint at the feet of Nick Barkley. Next day Nick organizes to get Sabrina to town and set up to rejoin the now repaired coach. He is clearly infatuated by her but she resists his advances. Later that day the stranger she saw the previous night arrives in town. Sabrina tells Nick about the man, whom she calls Jack Floyd, wanted for murder. A day later another man, Jack arrives in town. It becomes clear this is the real Jack Floyd and Sabrina is his lover. She goes to Pierce and tells him where to find Floyd, then tells Nick to meet her at the location. Nick, the better shot, shoots and wounds Floyd. The sheriff discovers his real name was John Pierce, and he'd been trailing Floyd since the murder of his brother. The sheriff discovers Sabrina had met with Floyd when the night stage arrived. Nick goes to confront her only to find she's checked out. He tracks her and Floyd to a remote farmhouse and a gun battle erupts.

Jarod Barkley has been appointed by the state government in Sacramento to deliver proof to the Matthews family why they can't remain on the property and try to mediate. However, due to an accident caused by the woman's son he ends up with amnesia. While he's struggling with having no memory, he decides he will help the woman fight for her land. The increasingly desperate cattlemen will stop at nothing to push them off that land. Meanwhile, Jarod's family is worried at this point over his disappearance. He had left days ago and they have not heard anything from him. So Nick and Heath decide to follow the trail he took.
