During king Edward I's war against the Scots, champion knight Wilkin Brattle was betrayed and left for dead by traitor rivals, now Baron Ventris and his right hand, chamberlain Milus Corbett, who terrorize their Welsh county subjects and extort neighbor baron Pryce for access to the sea. Wilkin remains tormented by nightmares, despite fidelity to a pledge in a battle field vision to abandon his sword for a higher cause, hiding his past even for true love Petra, pregnant of his heir. Wilkin only counsels the hooded rebels to steal back crushing taxes, but when the baron mounts a punitive expedition, burning the village in blood, takes charge of mission to revenge their loved ones at all cost, assuming the identity of slain traveling executioner Maddox, whose sadism extended to his wife and kid son Luca.

Finding their loved-ones massacred and tormented despite the baron and his men being slain by the massed rebels, Wilkin reneges his just-renewed pacifist vow to devote himself to revenge. Assuming the bastard executioner Maddox's identity, he returns Ventriss's corpse to the unsuspecting widow. Chamberlain Milus, an abusive sodomite himself, plots to maintain his position as virtual regent, now as widow baroness Lady Love Ventris's strong arm, and eliminates his clumsy brother Randolph Corbett, who denounced the identity theft but is condemned to death as a cowardly lying deserter. 'Maddox' is ordered to take up residence as permanent executioner, starting with Randolph's decapitation.

Young rebels from a fishing village successfully raid a baronial coach, but the dashing leader's brat sister who followed against his instructions stupidly gets caught. Milus has soldiers fetch reluctant Wilkin to start executing his torturer office on her. She stays silent even with a finger nail torn out, but the baroness deduces enough to direct the punitive expedition to the village, where emotional blackmail does the rest to get a trail to the rebel leader Wolf. Wilkin is puzzled why Maddox's widow Jessamy keeps calling him that even alone and shocked she continues sadistic flagellation on kid son Luca's bare back 'as he always imposed' whereas the boy now literally cries on his 'fatherly' shoulder for comfort.

While Milus plots for power with baron Pryce, the torture of captured rebels to find leader Wolf is left to a professional under instructions of the ruthless archdeacon (virtual bishop).

Royal confident Piers Gaveston duly mistrusts baroness Love's claim to be expecting an heir, so he makes surprise visit to Ventrisshire with an expert 'piss prophet'. Milus uses the 'release' into forced labor of the caught rebels to blackmail Wilkin into raiding and burning rival baron Pryce's precious gift to the king, with a cruel twist. Milus's attempts to seduce Piers by wenches or his own gay services end in bitter private humiliation which he takes out on 'toyboy' Frenchie after a walloping from Wilkin. The baroness grows close, even intimate, to the kind executioner after he suggests the services of healer-sorceress Annora, whose wolf recipe works to fake pregnancy, while crazy 'wife' Jessamy Maddox grows jealous of Love.

Fed-up with Milus's cruelty, now lady Love actually 'releases' his rebel comrades from the dungeon, Wilkin and a deputy volunteer for some purveyor transport as cover to smuggle arms stolen from the castle, but bump into helpful knights who insists one should accompany them, who notices the rattling and must be killed. Baroness Love had her own secret meeting, with the mysterious rebel leader Wolf, who is actually her carefully masquerading sibling Gruffudd y Blaidd.

Milus had forced Wilkin and his deputy Toran Prichard to resume their work as executioner and torturers so the captured rebels remain in 'mere' servitude, but rapes and murders one of them, hooded at night, like he was often abused in church orphanage. Baroness Love remains politely aloof towards visiting baron Edwin Pryce, unwilling to unite their shires by marriage now he's a widower too. Disgusted to learn that debt-crushed peasant Berwyn Cairn concluded a deal to be publicly quartered as warning in exchange for financial salvation for his family, Wilkin offers the baroness written confession and his true identity to be executed instead, but she works out both men are innocent and insists on the political execution. Archdeacon Robinus's heretics hunt finds no marks on the rebels, yet turns to the healer.

Fallen out of royal favor, Pierce fled, probably to Ventrisshire. The baroness promises the posse of royalist lords to catch him if they agree also to let the shire deal with the rebels her way. Milus recruits Wilkin and Toran for the chase. Father Ruskin learns about archdeacon Robinus's heretics hunt and beats them to Annora 's cave where he gets to read the healer's priceless treasure, an alternative Epistle brought from Jerusalem by the Templars, including her burns-mutilated lover-protector. The archdeacon's troops find the cave but suffer the sting of its elaborate booby traps.

The Bernadette Maneuver/Cynllwyn Bernadette

Milus's military search party tracks down Pierce Gavestone over the Welsh border in an English fortified monastery and manages to seize it with him and his protector, English Lord Pembroke. Wilkin's torturer skills are used -or so it appears- on the earl's mistress to force him into legalizing the seizure of the former royal favorite in writing while Milus takes humiliating revenge on the haughty 'Frenchman', whom the barons want executed on the spot. The baroness discretely captures Maddox's widow and works out a deal spearing the kids and her. Lucas however has been kidnapped with father Ruskin as the archdeacon wants leverage to make him betray the location of the healer and Templar to eradicate the heretical Seraphin gospel which could overthrew the church.

He becomes a Welsh barley farmer and marries. His pregnant wife and unborn child are murdered. He meets up with a mystical healer, and the healer's mate an ancient Templar. He has a important destiny to fulfill they say. There are more angelic and mystical visions. Assuming another false identity he becomes the executioner and punisher for the reigning baroness. They fall in love. The mystical healer tells him about the real Jesus and that the bloodline of Jesus continues on through her and to him.
