Amazing Race: Phil Keoghan Explains Why These 11 Teams Have Unfinished Business

It's time to hit the road again on The Amazing Race — with plenty of familiar faces. The CBS reality hit returns Sunday with 11 veteran teams who had never won before to settle, as the season's subtitle says, some Unfinished Business. "These are teams that have been so incredibly popular that it was an opportunity to bring back some favorite teams that have favorite stories," host Phil Keoghan tells TVGuide.com. "They're teams that have really been walking around with the 'woulda, coulda, shoulda' ever since they got kicked off. It's like, enough moaning; come back and give it another shot and no more excuses."Check out photos from The Amazing RaceBut casting Unfinished Business — the show's second all-star outing after Season 11 — was as hard as designing the Race itself. For one, Season 13 wound up not being represented at all, even though fan favorites Toni and Dallas, who lost their passports, seemed like shoo-ins. "It really comes down to whether you think that story of theirs is really stronger than that of anyone we've got," Keoghan says. "There are a lot of other teams, but I feel pretty confident that the teams we've got have the best stories and the best motivation for coming back."So why are these 11 also-rans the cream of the crop? After nine cities, four continents, nearly 30,000 miles and one giant bowl of camel milk, it all comes down to this: Three of the original 11 teams are left running in The Amazing Race 12, and only one will win the $1 million prize in the Jan. 20 season finale on CBS (8 pm/ET). CBS has greenlit production on a 13th cycle of The Amazing Race, which currently is in the midst of Season 12.... VH1 has ordered new seasons of Celebrity Fit Club and Ego Trip's The (White) Rapper Show — each of which will have a twist. Per the Reporter, Fit Club will feature former cast members versus new D-listers, while Ego Trip's Miss Rap Supreme (as the follow-up is titled) will search for the next great female MC.... VH1 has also OK'd Viva Hollywood!, in which 12 Latino and Latina contestants aspire to be telenovela stars.

Their bickering and poor navigation skills may have gotten Shana Wall and Jennifer McCall (aka the Blondes, Part 2) ousted from The Amazing Race 12, but it's their videotaped words that haunt them. In the fourth leg of The Amazing Race 12 (Sundays, 8 pm/ET, CBS), the powers-that-be replaced the dreaded Yield with a new surprise — the U-Turn, a tool that allows one team to send a trailing team back to do the other half of the detour they intentionally chose not to do. It's evil. And when the Blondes used it, actors Lorena Segura and Jason Widener became its first victims even though they technically did nothing wrong. Talk about bad luck. Prime time, shime time. The first Sunday of November sweeps' top program aired in the afternoon: CBS' coverage of the New England Patriots/Indianapolis Colts game averaged a ginormous 22.5 household rating and 39 share. Did I say the day's top program? Pshaw. That was actually the best-rated afternoon regular-season NFL game in decades! Natch, those numbers helped 60 Minutes, which did better in the 18-49 demo than it had in almost two years (a 5.0 rating, 12 share), and Amazing Race, which garnered its best premiere demos since '05 (4.2/9). Also of note: Fox's "Treehouse of Horror" episode of The Simpsons scared up a 5.7 rating and a 13 share in the 18-49 demo, its best showing in about four years, and Desperate Housewives, the night's No. 1 show in the baby-faced demo, earned a 7.0 rating and a 16 share. —Ben Katner

Reality TV's most fantastic voyage is back, and as the 12th season of The Amazing Race (Sundays at 8 pm/ET, CBS) kicks off, TVGuide.com got the inside scoop from one of the new teams. Before we see the first detour, roadblock or "Philimination," dating couple Lorena Segura, 27, and Jason Widener, 33, tell us about the new challenges, how the Race affected their relationship and what they didn't pack for the trip. I love travel, and I love competition, and I just thought this was a perfect match.
