Veronica's mother Carol arrives with her arsonist son Marty, who has Tourette's Syndrome. They are homeless, as Marty burned down their house. Meanwhile, Lip and Kev steal meat from a broken-down Army truck to sell to the residents, unaware that it has been deliberately contaminated as part of a chemical-warfare exercise. As a result people get very ill and the estate is quarantined, leading to a riot orchestrated by Frank, who had been with Sheila as she went into labor.

Sheila is surprised when Frank's father Neville comes to see the twins Delia and Nigel, because Frank had told her he was dead. The kids are delighted to see him but Frank is not, especially when Neville makes him get a job as a window cleaner. When Neville collapses, Frank hopes he is free of him, but Neville is a stronger man than his son. Veronica's violent resentment of Karen working at the Jockey leads to her being barred and coming up with a kinky means of reinstatement.

At the Balls' anniversary party, Frank takes a call that says they have been accepted as trial foster parents--but he forgets to tell them until the next day, when their charge, a weedy little boy named Eric, arrives. When Kev learns that Eric has been bullied at school, he teaches him to box, but the couple's indulgence in hash cakes terminates the arrangement when one makes Eric ill. Meanwhile, Tony has caught evidence of Steve's car thefts on CCTV.

When the police temporarily shut down the Jockey, Frank turns Sheila's house into a drinking den and almost loses the twins through a bad choice of babysitter. Fiona suspects Steve of having an affair but discovers that the "other woman" is a daughter from a youthful fling. Carol and Veronica go head-to-head when the council announces that the owner of the best-kept garden will get a year's free rent, but after a showdown at Carol's birthday party from which Veronica is banned, everyone discovers that it's a ploy by the council to get residents to keep their properties tidy.

Frank almost discovers Ian's homosexuality though Lip is sleeping with Mandy Maguire whilst she pretends to be Ian's girlfriend. Steve's car is stolen by a jealous Tony who sets him up as bait to catch a gang of murderous villains,the upshot being that Steve has to lie low. Marty gets evil revenge on Carol's perpetually noisy dog whilst she is on holiday.

Sheila asks Lip to house-sit for her holidaying friend Lena but when the place is burgled bent copper Neary arrests Lip as the culprit. The family retrieve the stolen goods and concoct a plot to frame Neary for police brutality,letting Lip off the hook. Debbie starts a DVD business by copying some of the Karibs' stock but inadvertently ends up with a home sex tape which does the rounds of the estate.

The violent Maguire clan arrive on the estate and learn that their daughter Mandy is pregnant. Though Lip is the father the assumption is that pretend boyfriend Ian is responsible and he is ordered to marry her. New landlady Cassie comes up with a way to make Frank pay off his bar tab whilst Fiona is mugged on her way home from a night out.

After a drunken night Fiona wakes up to find that not only has she slept with unpopular Joey Dawson, but also that Liam has eaten some of her birth-control tablets. The family is subsequently visited by social-worker Katrina Webb, Fiona's old school adversary--and Joey's fiancee. When Katrina learns that Joey slept with Fiona, she makes it her business to get Liam taken into care, which involves Sheila pretending to be Monica; amazingly, Frank saves the situation. Meanwhile, Ian is off the hook with the Maguires--but a comparison of family blood groups reveals that he is not the son of Frank Gallagher.

Craig Garland, the brother of the lad who mugged Fiona, returned her bag to her and they slept together; now, having quit her job at the nursery, Fiona confides in Veronica that she's pregnant by him. Meanwhile, Frank catches his mouth on the Karibs' shop door, causing it to bleed is persuaded to sue but when his actions mean that Yvonne must close the job he incurs the estate's wrath and must back-pedal.

Kev's sister Kelly, who has long been Veronica's enemy, turns up, and when Veronica discovers that she's a drug addict she exerts revenge by subjecting her to cold turkey. Craig is living with Fiona, but his estranged wife Sue who threw him out of their home, appears and has an affair with Marty. Believing that she is only using him to get back at Craig, Marty threatens to jump from a tower block, but Debbie and Craig talk him down. After Sue tells him that she's genuinely fond of him, Marty repays Craig by giving his father the (unconventional) cremation Craig claims he wanted.

When local resident Lillian Tyler's husband dies, Frank suggests that he impersonate him to keep her benefits, but CCTV footage of drug-dealing Bernie being shot scotches that; worse, his accidental killer is Car, so again the family rallies to save one of their own from arrest. Kash stands for the local council and defeats corrupt opponent Bernie Creme when the latter gives a racist outburst in the Jockey, where Frank and Sheila have "contrived" to win a holiday in the raffle. Steve returns and Fiona goes off with him, leaving a devastated Craig to be comforted by Karen.
