Sergeant Metaurus acknowledges briefing of a mission to destroy a relic before donning his power armor, and reflects that he had recruited a youth who knew no fear, rather than needing it trained out of him to become a Space Marine. He and his squad, who include Lieutenant Titus, drop to a planet, dragging a stone sarcophagus. They battle Chaos cultists, and eventually reach the relic, a statue. There the sarcophagus opens, revealing a psyker, who provides the team with a psychic force field. A powerful Chaos sorcerer flanks the marines and kills the psyker. The sorcerer freezes time and psychically attacks each marine by preying on their deepest fears. It reaches Metaurus, who sees Titus becoming corrupted into a Chaos Marine, and he falls. Titus resists the sorcerer's attack, and he kills it. Titus contacts the marines' spacecraft, and calls in an orbital strike on the relic. Metaurus is resigned to death, but Titus disagrees, drags Metaurus out, and turns to face an oncoming horde.
