Popular animated series featuring Scooby-Doo, a Great Dane who joins four California high school students (Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy) on many quests to solve strange mysteries. Each mystery is current and unusual and involves the group stopping someone from wreaking certain havoc on the world. The gang were always driving in the Mystery Machine, returning from or going to a regular teenage function, when their van develops engine trouble or breaks down for a variety of reasons. Their (unintended) destination turns out to be suffering a monster problem, and the gang volunteers to investigate the case. Eventually, enough clues are found to convince the gang that the ghost or monster was a villain. Invariably, the ghost or monster was apprehended and revealed to be an apparently blameless authority figure or otherwise innocuous local who uses the disguise to cover up a crime or scam. After proclaiming "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!", the villain was then taken away to prison, and the gang was allowed to continue on their way to their destination.

The ghost of Mr. Hyde is scaling walls and breaking into shops to steal jewelry. But Hyde picks the wrong place to hide when he sneaks into the Mystery Machine after one of his capers. Scooby and the gang soon find him and flee for their lives. But they're not too scared to investigate this mystery. The gang searches for clues at the home of Dr. Jekyll, who believes he may be turning into the ghost himself. But Helga, the untidy housemaid, is another suspect. The ghost of Mr. Hyde will be seeing ghosts himself before the gang finds out who he really is.

It's another week of slim pickings when it comes to quality TV-on-DVD releases (I can't wait until August/September when all the new, loaded sets come out). It's a bit odd, but the releases this week fall into three categories: old shows, animated shows and British shows. I selected one of the old shows as the "Pick of the Week": The Streets of San Francisco, Season 1, Volume 1. The acclaimed police drama starring Karl Malden and a very young Michael Douglas came out in 1972, and this four-disc set includes the pilot movie and the first 13 episodes from Season 1. (The box says 16, but the sticker on the front, which says 13, is correct.)The set includes two bonus features, though they're both very short. The first is a 3:45-minute interview with Michael Douglas and Karl Malden, conducted by Army Archerd, and the second is an 8:44-minute pilot presentation.Another noteworthy title next week is Scooby-Doo Where Are You! Horseland

Far away, in spectacular countryside, there's a fantastic place called Horseland - a complex of stables, arenas, barns, rolling green pastures, and riding trails through verdant mountain forests.
