A new school year at Bayside begins, and with Tommy, Lindsay and R.J. gone, the new additions to the gang are Eric Little, Bayside's new football star, Katie Peterson, and Nicky Farina who happens to be Ryan's stepbrother that arrives from New York City to stay and threatens to undermine Ryan's seniority at Bayside, while he is trying to get new uniforms for the girls sports department. Meanwhile, Screech tries to find a way of selling a huge amount of balloons that he bought during the summer, thinking he could make a quick sale with them.

At the mall, Rachel helps get Nicky a job as an usher at the movie theater she works for. Her boss, Mr. Dimmick, turns out to be sexist, though, and promotes Nicky to weekend manager over Rachel. Katie gets a job working for a famous beautician, Jean-Paul, but, when she helps Maria get an appointment, he gives Maria a bad hairdo. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding buys a low-fat yogurt stand in the mall and hires Screech and Eric to run it, but, when they realize the yogurt tastes bad, they add hot fudge to it, putting them in danger of false advertising.

At the mall, the gang pair off and enter a dance contest in order to win two tickets to the MTV Music Awards, but no one will enter with Nicky so he enters individually. When Nicky wins, the rest of the gang pressure him to pick one of them to take with him to the awards. The pressure becomes too much for Nicky and threatens to jeopardize his friendships with the gang. Meanwhile, Screech has a crush on Linda, a customer at Yukon Yogurt, and pretends to own the yogurt shop in order to impress her.

The gang pair up to take care of baby simulator dolls for a health class project, but the stress of the project threatens to tear apart their personal lives and put their friendship in jeopardy.

When Bayside holds a Sadie Hawkins dance where the girls ask the boys, Maria starts a matchmaking service to help students find dates. Rachel initially asks Ryan to the dance but they each back out after a photo in the school newspaper emphasizes their height differences. Katie wants to ask Nicky to the dance but, when he pressures her to ask him, she backs out and seeks another date. Eric wants a girl named Jennifer but she doesn't seem to know he exists. When he finds out she likes coin collecting, he pretends to share her interest to attract her. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding has trouble reading things so Screech convinces him to get an eye exam.

Eric feels left out when his presence on the football team is ignored. After he makes the winning touchdown for the Valley football game, Eric suddenly finds himself considered the school hero, with Rachel and Maria wanting to do their class project on him, Ryan selling autographed t-shirts, and Heather, a cheerleader he has a crush on, suddenly interested in him. But Eric lets his new fame go to his head, ignoring commitments and threatening his friendships with the gang. Meanwhile, Nicky becomes jealous when he finds out Katie's old boyfriend is coming to town next week and joins the cheerleader squad to spend more time with her. When he finds out how difficult being a cheerleader is, though, he fakes an injury to get out of the squad.

Mr. Belding appoints Maria and Eric justices for student court and Ryan chief justice to teach them a lesson about responsibility. They initially take advantage of the position, using it to leverage a winning position for their team in the upcoming rainy day sports competition in order to win a trip to Catalina. But when Mr. Belding catches Nicky and Katie gambling on school property, Ryan is pressured to go light on them and must choose whether to give them a punishment that will mean they can't participate in the competition, or abuse his position to let them off the hook.

When Katie finds out that Maria and Rachel are buying expensive dresses for the fall formal, she's scared to tell anyone that she can't afford a new dress at all. Mr. Belding's air conditioner isn't working right so she convinces Screech to hire her to repair it, and gets Nicky to help her. The air conditioner blows up--quite literally--and, faced with not being able to earn money to buy the dress, she breaks up with Nicky to avoid going to the formal. Meanwhile, Ryan schemes to get Eric and his brothers to replace Mr. Belding's barber shop quartet as entertainment for the formal. But when Eric finds out a big music producer is chaperoning the formal, he fakes losing his voice to avoid the pressure of performing.

When Ryan doesn't make the varsity wrestling team for his weight class, he goes on an extreme weight loss regimen to lose eight pounds in three days so he can make it at lower weight class, afraid Rachel will think he's a loser if he doesn't make the team. This is the same weight class Nicky is wrestling in, though, and Ryan feels guilty when Nicky, seeing how important being on the wrestling team is for Ryan, throws the match during tryouts so Ryan can be on the team instead. Meanwhile, Maria and Katie create a "Hunks of Bayside" calendar to raise money for the athletic fund. Katie becomes upset when she realizes Maria's exploiting the jocks by having them pose shirtless and rallies the jocks to drop out of the calendar.

With midterms coming up, Ryan, Nicky, and Eric are scared they will fail their home economics test, to bake a lemon meringue pie. They purchase a pie at The Max and sneak it into class, earning an A. This leads Screech to believe they're good bakers, and he enlists them to bake a cake for Mr. Belding's tenth anniversary at Bayside party. Meanwhile, a boy Maria likes uses her to help him study for Spanish and then steals $150 from the girls they intended to use to buy Mr. Belding a present.

Bayside puts on a Renaissance Faire. Rachel and another student, Tim, have the best ideas for funding the event and are assigned as co-chairs of the faire committee. Ryan becomes jealous of Rachel and Tim working together and locks Tim in a janitor's closet during a presentation to potential sponsors, ruining the event and putting the financial backing of the faire in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Maria tries to push Katie into doing a Punch and Judy show but Katie rebels when she feels like Maria isn't listening to her suggestions, pushing the limits of their friendship.

As manager of Bayside's radio station, Katie looks for ways to gain listeners. While Ryan and Eric produce a show that places Eric in ridiculous situations, Katie asks Nicky to work as Maria's engineer since Maria has had trouble working with other engineers. As Maria and Nicky work together, they develop feelings for each other and must decide whether to tell Katie. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding and Screech try out different formats for shows searching for their own niche.

While volunteering at the hospital, Eric meets Larry Madison, a former comedian and performer. Though initially gruff, Larry softens up when he finds out Eric is an aspiring performer, too, and the two form a bond. Larry dies, however, and Eric must deal with his grief. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding accidentally injures Screech while showing off for Larry and Screech uses his position to guilt Mr. Belding into waiting on him. Elsewhere, Rachel and Maria try to set Katie up with Greg, another hospital volunteer, despite the fact that Katie says she's not ready to date again following her break-up with Nicky.

The gang volunteer for community service at the Palisades Hospital. Rachel has a phobia of hospitals so she convinces the staff to assign her to the gift shop. When Ryan develops appendicitis and needs surgery, she finds herself unable to visit and support him, leaving Ryan feeling like Rachel doesn't care about him. Meanwhile, Eric pretends to be a patient to spend time with an attractive female orderly, and Mr. Belding volunteers for a sleep deprivation study but finds it difficult to stay up for the necessary forty-eight hours.

At the mall, the gang are excited to see the hosts of a local tabloid television show and, when they find out the duo is doing a segment on teenagers in the work force, they convince the reporters to interview them doing their jobs at the mall. But when the show edits the footage to make them look incompetent and lazy, they find themselves in danger of losing their jobs while Yukon Yogurt faces the possibility of closure when footage seems to show Eric spilling a tub of yogurt and then serving it to a customer. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding and Screech shoot a commercial for Yukon Yogurt.

During Crime Prevention Month at Bayside, Nicky and Maria sign up for karate lessons in the gym. But, when Maria turns out to be better at karate than Nicky, even defending herself at The Max, Nicky feels emasculated and pressures Maria not to enter an upcoming karate tournament. Meanwhile, Ryan and Eric help Screech increase security in Mr. Belding's office. But, when Mr. Belding sends his laptop off to have more memory installed, Screech thinks someone stole it and seeks out the thief. Katie feels insecure about staying with her aging aunt and keeps a dummy around to ward off would be attackers.

At the mall, the gang's band is hired to perform at the night club. But, when Rachel joins as a backup singer, the rest of the gang have trouble telling her that she's not good. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding and Screech recruit the gang to help get the word out to vote in the 1996 Presidential Election. Screech becomes cynical by the lack of response to their efforts, though, and considers not voting himself.

As an alumni of Space Camp, Screech arranges for the gang to attend for a class project. Nicky excels during the training and hopes the gang will choose him to be mission commander. They vote, and Ryan is narrowly elected mission commander instead, causing Nicky to become jealous and leading Ryan to force Nicky to work mission control instead of coming on the shuttle. When Nicky and Ryan's feud spread to the rest of the gang, the mission and the gang's grade may be jeopardized. Meanwhile, Mr. Belding becomes jealous about the attention Screech gives his old Space Camp commander.

With the science fair coming up, Eric builds a robot that vacuums while Maria builds a device that sorts trash for recycling. Screech, hoping to help Bayside win the science fair for the first time, helps Eric cheat by rebuilding his robot as a smarter and better machine. Meanwhile, Rachel and Katie pressure Ryan and Nicky to take them to see a production of "Hamlet" staring Keanu Reeves. But when the boys forget to buy tickets and the play sells out, they have to figure out a way to make $400 fast so they can buy tickets from a scalper.

At Space Camp, Katie feels lonely seeing Ryan, Rachel, Nicky, and Maria acting cheesy and romantic and decides she needs to find someone to date even if she doesn't like them. She settles for Gordon, a smart and geeky guy who she's not really attracted to, and eventually accepts his invitation to the dance. When Gordon finds out how Katie really feels for him, though, Katie has to decide how to handle the situation. Ryan and Nicky buy ugly jackets for Rachel and Maria, wanting them to wear them to the dance, and the girls have trouble telling the boys how they really feel about the gifts. Meanwhile, Eric signs up for a three day shuttle simulation to impress a girl, but, when she backs out due to being sick, he ends up with Mr. Belding and Screech. But Mr. Belding finds he can't handle the simulator and has to back out, leaving him feeling dejected.

At Space Camp, the gang is divided into two teams: the Red Team consisting of Ryan, Eric, and Katie and the Yellow Team, consisting of Rachel, Maria, and Nicky. Mr. Belding supervises the Red Team while Screech supervises the Yellow, and the two soon become overly competitive over who can build a better rocket. Two campers from another class are added to the teams when they miss graduation, with Mary Beth Pepperton joining the Red Team and Amy Wright joining the Yellow. Ryan quickly grows close to Mary Beth. Mr. Belding sends them out in his car to get supplies for the rocket, and when the car breaks down, they end up kissing, leaving Ryan to decide whether to tell Rachel or not.

Maria gets a promotion to weeknight manager at the Teen Machine. However, she quickly has trouble balancing work, school, and her personal life, blowing off cheerleader practice and ignoring Nicky. When she falls behind on a term paper, she lies to the teacher, Mrs. Tarlow, to get an extension. Meanwhile, Screech thinks Mr. Belding has forgotten his birthday because he's not planning a party for him. However, Mr. Belding recruits Ryan and Eric to plan the party so Screech won't find out.

Episode 24

After Bayside is beaten in basketball by Valley, Mr. Huffington, the principal of Valley, arrives at Bayside to gloat to Mr. Belding. After seeing how good of an administrative assistant Screech is, Mr. Huffington offers him an extra $50 a week to transfer to Valley as his administrative assistant. While Screech contemplates his decision, he reminisces on events from the past season with Mr. Belding and the gang.

Episode 25

It's Christmas time and the gang, along with Mr. Belding and Screech, get into the spirit of the season by buying each other presents and putting them under the tree at The Max. Ryan, who's recently gotten a job at The Max, forgets to turn off the Christmas tree lights when he locks up for the night. A short in the lights cause the Christmas tree and The Max to catch on fire and burn down, taking the gang's presents with them. Ryan finds it difficult to forgive himself for ruining everyone's Christmas and believes he caused The Max to catch fire. When the owner of The Max decides not to rebuild, Ryan asks Mr. Belding to transfer him to another school to avoid the stigma of being the kid who burned down The Max.
