Revered Cotton Mather returns, accompanied by a powerful witch, past the corrupt town militia quarantine. Reverend Lewis abhors the sight of his vindictive stake-burnt daughter Mercy, hell-bent on revenge with a witch-ally.

Loosing it heralds the end of Mary Sibley's reign of terror, despite resorting to free husband George from his internal toad curse. Control of the town is taken over, officially on state authority, by young baron Sebastian Marburg and his domineering mother, a countess, who warns Mary time is running out to do their diabolic duty to establish the reign of black magic and demonstrates her new authority, liberating the incompetent magistrate so as to fool the populace while calling for renewed 'witch-hunting' as her purge. Mercy Lewis dares not believe her luck when the countess promises both to restore her slightly body and exact unspeakably worse revenge on Mary, to which purpose a captured other witch's juices are mercilessly harvested.

Resurrected John Alden finds himself chain-suspended by a lustful witch, most suspicious of her promise to become the instrument of Mary and Anne Hale's downfall. Baron Sebastian Marburg resigns to being replaced as child-lurer, promised promotion by his enigmatic mother, and delivers on his sinister promise to deliver Mary of George's remains, albeit as cannibalistic roast at a dinner hosted by Mary 'in honor of the countess', who accepts sanctimoniously as an excuse to let blackmailed Anne spot and steal the book to bring Sibley down, accepting Cotton's proposal just to get away. Mary plans instead to allow Increase Mather, whom she summoned from his personal hell, in a pact to bring the Marburg down finally by stealing from her boat the object that kept her beauty and health. Tituba fails to bring John to the forest. Dr. Samuel Wainwright seeks Cotton's tacit blessing for experimental vivisection on a dying plague victim to investigate the difference with contagions outside Salem.

Hathorne enjoys putting Mary Sibley where she belongs: in the stocks, awaiting execution, albeit it actually for refusing to sacrifice her possessed boy to start the diabolic age, and failing to convince the countess it can still fail by exorcism. Inexperienced Cotton Mather is attempting such ritual with John Alden, whose paternity is thus exposed. Baron Sebastian Marburg enjoys his own 'good hunting' in the New World. At Sibley's funeral, Isaac Walton bitterly scolds all townsfolk's hypocrisy.

Badly wounded, captain John Alden senior is saved from Sebastian's ghostly attack party and nursed by Cotton Maher, who gave John junior to his bride Anne Hale and refuses to believe she's a witch until he sees her practice magic to hide the boy, promising falsely reunion with his mother. Magistrate Hathorne frees Isaac 'the fornicator' from the stocks, just punishment for impudence, but praises his honesty and fully rehabilitates him in the post-Sibley era. Baron Sebastian is not amused that Mercy Lewis offers herself as bed playmate, proving Mary's point previously: she's just a Marburg tool, to be discarded at will. Anne is unwilling to do countess Marburg's bidding, even told she's herd daughter, and betray Mary, but shown Tituba's ingrate fate and warned, ends up bringing boy John to the moor for the comet passing. Mary risks everything by magically entering her Essex coven's stronghold under a tree, yielding little support, but can warn captain Alden their son is in danger at the ceremony as diabolically possessed main instrument. The Marburgs trick Mary into refusing cooperation out of parental love, which gets expressed, which was the real requirement for the sacrifice to work, and the captain shoots too late: John junior incarnates the hellish master.
