Nothing in This World Is Easy

Plot Summary: Nadia Vulvokov, a sharp-tongued, cynical software engineer in New York City, attends her own 36th birthday party thrown by her best friend Maxine. Nadia drinks heavily, does drugs, hooks up with a guy named Mike, and generally treats the night like a chaotic victory lap. On her way home, Nadia is hit by a car and dies. Then-suddenly-she's back in Maxine's bathroom mirror, alive again, the party restarting exactly as before. At first, Nadia assumes she blacked out or was from the substances at the party. But when the same details repeat (the same jokes, the same songs, the same people saying the same lines) it becomes clear that something is wrong. At her second experience at the party, Nadia does not go home with Mike, but instead stays and receives her friend Ruth to the celebration. Ruth is an older woman who is mother figure to Nadia and was best friends with Nadia's deceased mother. Eventually Nadia's ex John arrives at the party. Nadia attempts to tell him what she experienced, and though he isn't condescending, John simply doesn't understand what Nadia is saying. Eventually they leave the party to look for Nadia's missing cat, Oatmeal. Nadia is almost hit again by the same car, but this time John stops her before she is struck. Nadia and John argue, and they separate. After locating Oatmeal in the park, Nadia is sitting by the river but accidentally falls in, causing her to drown. She restarts again in the bathroom. Nadia decides to leave the party, completely disoriented by the events of the evening.
