Richard Diamond is hired by Alec Bruce, the editor of the Bridgeburg Gazette, to protect their party candidate, Allison Garvey, from murder or abduction by Michaud's Syndicate. Diamond is threatened at knife-point by Danny (one of Michaud's men) in his hotel room and told to lay off the case. Diamond takes his advice, tells Danny "he knows when to quit" since he is aware that Danny murdered the previous detective who was on the case. Diamond returns to the editor's office to inform them he is quitting the case since he believes there is an informer at the Gazette and he doesn't feel he has the support of Allison Garvey who he was hired to protect. Now that Diamond has everyone believing he is off the case, he continues to follow Allison. Allison has now been abducted and Diamond soon discovers that everything is not what it appears to be.

Otto Carl, with the assistance of two hoodlums, rob the Ajax Manufacturing Company safe of a reported $80,000 and hand-off the plunder to an accomplice driving a home-delivery milk truck. When the milkman, Frank Bonner, disappears with the cash, Otto, having created a fictitious purpose, hires Richard Diamond to find the man. The trail to Bonner begins at the rooming-house that he has called home for three years. The only clue discovered in the room is a swizzle stick from the Purple Grotto nightclub. Although not able to point to any possible location to find Frank, the owner of the nightclub provides a significant revelation. It seems that Otto's wife, Marion, and Frank, once had an intimate relationship. Diamond is now convinced that Marion is the key to resolving this case in short order.

When diamonds from a five-year-old robbery start appearing on the black market, the insurance company hires Richard Diamond to recover the gems. His primary suspect is the man who convicted of the crime and just released from prison, but the private detective begins believe that perhaps the man is innocent of the original crime as he maintains.

Ed's an alcoholic, although sober for 6 months, so the editor hires Richard Diamond to find Ed and see if he's drunk somewhere or in trouble with the racketeers. The extortion story is big, so the editor doesn't want to involve the police or anyone else yet. Diamond does find Ed drunk and passed out at an acquaintance's home, but there's more to it than the man just falling off the wagon.

Late one evening while driving back to New York, Richard Diamond, feeling a little sleepy, stops at an all-night cafe for a cup of black coffee. As he sips his brew, he notices an attractive woman sitting and staring blankly at nothing, as if in a trance. Shortly after the girl departs, Richard decides to continue on his way home. Minutes after getting back on the road he is forced to brake hard to avoid running over her. Now afoot, Richard accompanies the woman trying desperately to get any kind of a response from her, but not even so much as a single word. When he has to stop her from stepping out in front of an approaching car, Richard becomes concerned that she might be suicidal. Still, no response. He then follows her into a house that she is obviously familiar with. Once in the living room, Richard sees what is likely the cause of her shock induced trance; a man sitting in a chair with a gun on the floor beside him; an apparent suicide. As he calls for the police, she picks up the gun. He stops his call mid-sentence to wrestle the gun from her. In the scuffle, the gun fires, shooting the already dead man. When he returned to his phone call, the woman disappeared. Diamond decides that he must find the girl and somehow determine just what went down.

The police find the gun at the home of George Bond, one of the juveniles. Richard Diamond knows Mrs. Bond so he's trying to help. The store owner picks George out of a police line-up because he swears he recognizes the burglar's voice and blond hair. Diamond investigates some more, trying to find some proof that an innocent kid is being mistakenly charged.

Richard Diamond is hired by an insurance company to recover the "Empress Jewels" from a jewelry store worker who has hijacked them. Mr. Twinkham was told by the store owner to clean the jewels. After working for 20 years in the jewelry store, Twinkham feels entitled to more than just his normal wages. Now he'll only give them back to the owner Mr. Waldron if Waldron pays him a $50,000 cleaning fee. While Diamond tries to figure out where Twinkham hid the jewels, complications ensue.

With two robberies and one dead driver taking place along the same stretch of highway, Diamond decides to drive one of the trucks on that highway. He has a long list of suspects. First, he thinks there may be phony policeman doing the hijacking. Then he suspects the general manager may have killed his own driver. Or maybe the owner of the trucking company is involved. Throw in the flirtatious wife of the general manager and Diamond's got a lot to figure out.

Richard Diamond, leaving his office late one evening, meets Donald Hastings, owner of the jewelry manufacturing business down the hall. The two men share polite conversation on the elevator ride to the main floor. Leaving the elevator, a man barely seen by Diamond, shoots at them killing Hastings instantly. Later, Richard goes through the mug books at the police station but is unable to find the culprit that he knows he will recognize should he ever see him again. The next day Richard goes to the Hasting's apartment intending to speak with the widow but is intercepted by her sister, Monica Freeborn, who asserts that Mrs. Hastings needs to rest. He suggests she pass-on that Hastings was simply an innocent bystander cut down by a killer gunning for Diamond. He will do what he can to bring that criminal to justice. Back at police headquarters, Lt. Dennis McGough informs him that Kenny Lambert had recently been released, after serving five years, from Sing Sing Prison, and has disappeared. Lambert, when convicted, had promised to kill Diamond who had provided the evidence against him. Returning to his own apartment, Richard was greeted by gun-wielding Lambert, however, instead of using his gun, he engages Richard in a brutal fistfight. When it was over, as the exhausted and bruised men faced each other, Lambert declares that he has no intention of killing Diamond and that this fight made them even. Later, McGough informs Richard that Hastings was not quite so innocent; it seems that he was in the business of redesigning stolen jewelry for easy sale. Now Diamond faces a dilemma, just who was the intended target that fateful evening?

After Eddie finds out that Diamond's a private detective, he decides that Janet had a good idea and hires him at double what Janet was going to pay Diamond. The next attempt on Eddie's life is successful and Diamond suggests to Janet that someone did her a favor. But now Diamond has to figure out who the murderer is.

Diamond's current girlfriend is the owner of the art gallery and is afraid that if her gallery is mixed up in a heroin smuggling operation, she would be out of business. Diamond decides to investigate on his own before telling the police about his suspicions.
