Mickey Farmer has just pulled a payroll heist and killed two men. The police have him cornered as Mickey abducts an old lady at gunpoint. He escapes inside a building while holding the old lady hostage. Mickey calls out to police that he wants to talk to Richard Diamond. Against Lieutenant McGough's advice and leaving his gun behind, Diamond accepts to speak to Mickey alone. After promising "no cops", Mickey lets the old lady go. Mickey proceeds to tell Diamond about the heist, how the police were tipped off and how he was betrayed by his partner. Mickey wants Diamond to protect Sally, "a clean nice girl", who he went for in a big way. He wants Diamond to keep Sally from finding out about him and protecting her from his partner. As Mickey lay dying, Diamond promises to take his case. Later when Lieutenant McGough requests the details of their conversation, Diamond offers little information claiming that he was hired by Farmer to do a personal favor. When Diamond arrives at Sally's apartment, she claims she doesn't know a Mickey Farmer. She asks Diamond to come inside; Diamond is abruptly hit over the head and knocked out. Diamond returns to the Lieutenant's office and is reprimanded for withholding information about the case. Believing Sally has been kidnapped, the police and a frustrated, angry Diamond are back on the case.

Diamond is hired to find a little girl whose father has abducted her from her legal guardian. Diamond suspects that this isn't a family squabble over child custody when he learns that her husband is a shady importer who dabbles in diamond smuggling.

Glenn is getting ready to depart to Miami on a business trip but doesn't want to leave his wife Elaine alone. Glenn hires Diamond to pose as a personal friend and escort his wife around New York. While out dancing, an obviously frightened Elaine runs out on Diamond and returns to her hotel room. Diamond arrives and tries to determine what frightened her, she lets slip that he wants to "put her away too". A knock on the door terrifies her, begging him not to answer, Diamond answers the door and Doctors Tesla and Forrest enter. They claim Elaine is a patient of theirs who has had a mental breakdown due to her parents being killed in a plane crash. For her own protection, they claim she should be returned to the Oak Lane Rest Home immediately. Diamond tells them they have to wait until her husband returns, that he should make that decision. While Diamond tries to contact the husband by phone in the hotel lobby, the doctors return to Elaine's hotel room, drug her and escort her out of the hotel. Diamond returns to the hotel room and finds Elaine missing. Diamond pursues them to Chicago and locates the Oak Lane Rest Home. Dr. Norton tells Diamond that Elaine Willard is a patient there but that she has not left her room and it would appear that he is the victim of a hoax. Diamond, being a suspicious guy by nature, suspects something is not right and investigates further. He learns that Dr. Norton is actually Mr. Willard, Elaine's uncle who is trying to gain control of her parent's estate.

Diamond attempts to outwit, a beautiful widow and her boyfriend who are cashing in on the deceased husband's double-indemnity insurance. The detective tries to make them believe he saw them murder the husband.
