Newspaper publisher Victor Kendall, a perennial candidate for Lt Governor, loses the nomination to respected Judge Daniel Redmond. Kendall then attends a U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing, where cooperating witness Martin Weston is flabbergasted to hear himself involved in a 20-year-old fraud case. The committee adjourns to give Weston a chance to "refresh his memory". Kendall then goes to Redmond and accuses him of also being involved in the fraud. Weston also says that the judge profited from the scheme. In fact, all he did was describe, when questioned, a fraud case he'd just prosecuted, giving the schemers the idea of how to avoid the mistakes of the earlier crime. Redmond's old flame Madge Everly was there, but she refuses to help him. From Weston's partners in the scheme, Redmond learns that his payoff was the judgeship he now holds--purchased with their money and back-door political influence. He decides to resign from both his judgeship and the Lt Governor's race. This prompts his loyal secretary, Marian Lamont, to go to Perry for help. With difficulty, Perry gets the judge to accept help. They go together to the subcommittee hearing, but it has been postponed because Weston has been found dead in his apartment. There, Lt. Anderson learns that Weston was poisoned with morphine sulfate, and under the bed he finds a discarded vial of Marian Lamont's heart medication, which contains that poison--and which Redmond had picked up at the pharmacy.
