Episode 1

The Case of the Treacherous Toupee

After a two-year absence, Hartley Basset returns to Los Angeles just as his wife is about to use his proxy to dissolve the company he founded and create a new firm with Peter Dawson, who has taken over the presidency of the firm in his absence. Basset is told that the others assume he stole $6,000 from the firm when he left which is a surprise to him. Basset fires Dawson and when Perry Mason contacts him on Dawson's behalf, he suggests that his client has stolen funds from the firm. He asks to meet with Mason that night after he has finished going over the books. When Hartley Basset is found dead that very evening by Mason - with what proves to be a piece of Dawson's toupee in his hand - Perry's client is charged with his murder. In Perry's eyes however, there are several suspects including the dead man's wife Sybil, his son Dick and Dick's new wife Teddi who has now vanished and says she can identify the person who came out of Basset's office. Perry risks censure from the court as he tries to trick the culprit into revealing him or herself.

The Case of the Credulous Quarry

Because he was unable to secure an adequate judgment, attorney Everett Dorrell offers to lend Dick Hammond $15,000 for his mother's medical care. Dorrell gets a frantic call that his girlfriend Helen Austin is threatening to kill herself. He speeds out of his driveway and runs over Helen. Hammond drives up and offers to dispose of the body, suggesting that Dorrell drive into a post, have the car repaired and blame the damage on that accident. Dorrell gives Hammond the $15,000 in cash. That evening Hammond's garage catches fire, and Dorrell's damaged car is found inside. Clara Thorpe, Helen's aunt, demands Hammond return the $15,000 to her. Hammond consults Perry Mason, who says Dick must inform the authorities. Where Dorrell had been willing to support Hammond, his prospective father-in-law, Marvin Claridge, silences the attorney. Fatefully, Helen was the driver of the car that injured Hammond's mother and killed his sister. Further, she was dead a half hour before Dorrell hit her. Hammond is charged with murder, and Perry takes the case.

The Case of the Ill-Fated Faker

Carl Gorman spats with his wife Alice over his ne'er-do-well nephew, Jim Ferris, who constantly asks for money to pay non-existent gambling debts. Unknown to Carl, Alice is having an affair with Ferris, who schemes with Stanley Piper to extort money from Carl. Ferris persuades Alice to join the venture. Carl consults with Perry Mason on how to deal with Jim. Alice calls Carl from their mountain cabin, pretending to be held for $80,000 by the gamblers who are after Jim. Carl sends his secretary, Betty Wilkins, with a briefcase full of cash to the cabin. After the money arrives, Piper, masked and armed, rushes in to claim the ransom, but Alice pulls a gun and accidentally shoots Jim. A kerosene lamp falls to the floor in the struggle and sets the cabin on fire. Alice escapes and arrives home incoherent. Betty sees the cabin in flames and finds a gun--her gun--outside the cabin. Carl asks Perry to defend Betty, who is soon arrested for murder.

The Case of the Singular Double

At the Los Angeles airport parking lot, Lucy Stevens puts a briefcase in a car and telephones Hugo Burnette in New York to report a successful delivery of $60,000, which will be a bribe to secure favorable zoning for developer John Rushkin. During the phone call she tells Burnette that she can no longer be involved in the illegal activity and that she has found a way out. Marjorie Ralston drives the car to meet her boss, Whitney Locke, and hand over the briefcase, which proves to be stuffed with newspaper rather than cash. Burnette thinks Lucy stole the money. She disguises herself as a blond, writes a note and sends money to her cousin, Carol Morgan. Then she drives her car into the ocean, faking suicide. Pretending to be Carol, Lucy asks Perry Mason to look for Lucy. When Lucy's car is recovered, there is a woman's body inside, which is identified at first as Lucy, but later as Marjorie. Carol is a sham, and Lucy is arrested for murder. Perry must defend a duplicitous client.

The Case of the Lavender Lipstick

Karen Lewis is fired by her boss Max Pompey at Caresse Cosmetics for selling company secrets to a rival cosmetics firm headed by Gabe Rawson. Pompey found copies of several of the company's formulas in her desk along with a bank book showing two recent and very large deposits to her bank account. After Karen rejects his advances, she leaves and disappears. Her boyfriend who also works at Caresse, contacts Perry Mason to help find her letting Mason know that she seems to be hiding something from her childhood. When Caresse president Silas Vance hears of the firing, he overrules Pompey and tells Karen to return to her position in the lab. When she does, she finds the night watchman, Charles Knudsen, unconscious and Vance shot dead in his office. More ominously, they also find a partial note written by Vance that seems to point to Karen as the killer. Many of those involved have secrets they would prefer not to reveal and Perry Mason agrees to defend Karen against a charge of murder.

The Case of the Wandering Widow

At San Quentin, merchant seaman Burt Stokes comes forward as a witness to tell the Warden that Riley Morgan, convicted murderer, did not kill Martin Kendall. Morgan is paroled but is not paid for his improper imprisonment by the state. Stokes via a note left in her son Jimmie's schoolbooks also offers information on the crime to Morgan's wife Lorraine, requesting $5,000 to help rehabilitate Morgan. Bill Worth, a freelance writer, is working with Stokes on the story, including Lorraine's hidden past. At the same time he is reporting to Lorraine's brother-in-law who is a vice-president of the company Martin left to Lorraine. Lorraine contacts Perry Mason about a manuscript she received that distorts the details. Not sure Lorraine will pay him, Stokes also hits up Lorraine's brother who does pay. Morgan calls it quits with Stokes when he senses Stokes is trying to blackmail others. Lorraine arranges to meet Stokes in a public park. Later Perry and Paul Drake find Stokes dead, and evidence incriminates Lorraine so she is arrested for murder.

The Case of the Clumsy Clown

Circus clown Felix Heidemann marries Lisa in a whirlwind. Part owner Jerry Franklin, who is also in love with Lisa, is taken aback. In her drunken exuberance Lisa accidentally releases a tiger that seriously mauls Jerry. Four years later, Lisa has married wheelchair-bound Jerry out of pity, but she did not divorce Felix. The two owners of the circus have an agreement that gives each an option to buy the other owner out for $180,000. The second owner, Judd Curtis, comes to Felix telling him he wants the money Felix is raising for Jerry for his own use or he will tell Jerry about Lisa and Felix. Another clown, Tim Durant, tries to oust Felix from the circus to take his job by supporting Curtis, in his bid to buy out Jerry. Felix consults Perry Mason, and everyone goes to the circus that evening, including Lt. Tragg who has been called about an attempted murder. During Felix's act, the main attraction, one stunt involves blank cartridges, but one shot fired was a live round that kills Curtis. Tragg arrests Felix, and Perry must prove him not guilty.

Internationally known concert pianist David Carpenter has a irreparably disabled hand, the result of a tragic accident, and a disastrous cash flow problem. His business manager, Andrew Collis, suggests refocusing the career of David's protégé, brilliant pianist Donna Loring, into more lucrative musical fields. That evening David's car goes over a cliff, an apparent suicide. The life insurance on Carpenter is invalidated due to him committing suicide before the policy was in effect two years leaving his business still strapped for funds. Eric Sturgis, David's partner in artists management, tries to persuade David's widow Anita to guide Donna into the field of rock-and-roll. Anita is appalled. George Worthington tells Anita that he saw David's car being pushed over the cliff, making his death a homicide. Anita and George tell Perry Mason the tale, but Lt. Tragg finds that George was at a bookie joint at the time of David's death. However, Tragg believes it was murder and arrests Donna. Anita asks Perry to defend the young pianist who initially refuses his services.

The Case of the Nine Dolls

Preparing to go to Scotland for a fishing vacation, Perry takes on a very special client when 8-year-old Peggy Smith appears in his office and asks him to find out who she is. Perry learns that she attends a prestigious school and has been there since she was 3. Her school and residential fees are paid automatically by the Tobler bank in Switzerland, and twice a year she receives a lovely handmade doll from a Swiss toy shop. Perry flies to Switzerland but Swiss law keeps him from finding out who funds Peggy's life. During a chance meeting with American tourists at the doll shop in Switzerland, Perry learns of Peggy's family; later he receives a doll with a broken neck and a note that the same thing can happen to a little girl. Perry eventually convinces Courtney Jeffers that he is Peggy's grandfather, born to his daughter, after the man had initially denied the child's existence. Soon after the old man changes his will in Peggy's favor, he is killed and Perry finds himself defending Peggy's cousin, Linda Osborne, who is accused of the murder.

At the offices of a boat building company, Sam Crane calls Lester Martin to be sure the latter will be at the stockholders' meeting by 10:00 am. Lester's step-father, Judson Bailey, wants to take over the company and has the proxy of his wife, Lester's mother Emma and the votes held by company employee and his mistress, Lois Rogers. A gunman invades Lester's apartment and kidnaps him. In a remote area, Lester wrests the gunman's weapon away, and the kidnapper escapes. With Lester absent Judson agrees to delay the vote until 8:00 pm that evening. After Lester tells Sam what happened, Sam calls Marge Fuller, Lester's girlfriend, a professional photographer, to have her take a picture of Judson and the "The Man" at a bar where they might meet. She gets the picture but it is later stolen from her darkroom. At his mother's home, Lester accuses Bailey of setting up the kidnapping, but Emma does not believe her son, thinking he is a talkative tattletale. Lester consults Perry Mason, who attends the stockholders' meeting. Lt. Tragg turns up to announce that Bailey has been murdered. Lester disappears, but is later found and arrested.

Ranch owner Burt Farwell is marrying Rita Conover soon, which prompts his ex-wife Jill to consult Perry Mason about the welfare of their daughter Ann, who is away at a private boarding school. Ranch foreman Joe Dixon is also concerned about Ann. Unknown to Burt, Rita and ranch hand Rennie Foster seem to be an item. Perry calls Burt to discuss Ann's emotional health. Insecure about her future, Rita urges Burt to fly with her to Las Vegas to be married immediately. At school, Ann gives a new pair of red cowboy boots, a gift from her mother, to her best friend Kathy Jergens. Joe has a flat on the road; when he opens the trunk to change the tire, he discovers Rita's body. A police officer stops to ask him about a recent car wreck, but he takes Joe into custody when he sees the body in the trunk. Perry defends Joe, who is hardly the only suspect in the case.

In Upton, CA the governor's representative, state committeeman William Carter, offers the post of head of the crime commission to Mayor James Henderson over attorney Arnold Webberly, the other candidate for the office. Afterward, Jim's wife Mona makes a cryptic call to real estate developer Tom Stratton. At Mona's bidding, Susan Conley, Jim's secretary, picks up a $10,000 payoff from Stratton, but it's the old badger game. Photographer Frank Sykes bursts in and takes pictures of the bribe. Susan consults Perry Mason, telling him she signed a receipt but did not take the money. Mona accuses Julia Webberly, Arnold's wife, of suborning perjury in one of her husband's major cases, which Mona will keep secret if Arnold withdraws as a competitor to Jim. Perry calls on Jim. They hear a shot and find Mona dead, and the evidence points to Susan.

Aitken magazines are not profitable and former Editor-in-Chief Edmond Aitken no longer controls the company. The new CEO, Donald Fletcher, changes the tone of each mag which appalls the executive committee. At a party in his home, Fletcher insults Milly Nash, Edmond's sister-in-law, then his wife, Alyce Aitken, and Edmond punches him in the face. Poet Ben Nicholson consults Perry Mason about his firm, Pleiades Press, closely followed by Edmond Aitken, who discusses his problems with Perry. Later, Ben and Edmond meet at the Writers Club. Ben quotes the cynical E. A. Robinson poem "Richard Cory," which resonates with Edmond. Wishing to protect her investment and unaware of Edmond's plan to fight Fletcher, Alyce gives her proxy to the new CEO. That evening, Alyce sets out to retrieve her proxy. Edmond and Milly are in and out of the house and Fletcher winds up killed with his own gun. Lt. Tragg arrests Alyce who asks Perry to defend her but is less than forthright with her attorney.

Peter Caine, driving drunk at night on a lonely road, hits a man and seriously injures him. Peter's companion, Debra Bradford, takes over driving and leaves without offering assistance. She learns the man's name is Joseph Witt and devises a scheme for Peter to pay damages to Grace Witt, Joe's wife. Peter will buy the Witts' property for more than market value, which he willingly does. At the county board meeting, chief county engineer William Harper Caine, Peter's father, sides with Perry Mason to stop construction by contractor Roger Quigley until another survey may be prepared. Such a stop order will bankrupt Quigley, who accuses Caine of conflict of interest, citing Peter's recent real estate purchase. When Caine writes a check to Debra as final payment to Grace Witt, Quigley and his associate, Charles Sistrom, burst in and take pictures of the exchange. Now they want Caine to resign. Perry and Paul Drake find Quigley at home, dead with Caine--gun in hand-- standing over the body. Arrested, Caine confesses to the killing, but he is protecting someone else.

County tax man Ralph Duncan inventories a house after the owner died intestate. While there a woman stops by to question him about some items saying she had been the owner's maid. He finds a cache of old greenbacks, "shin plasters," worth $153,000. When he arrives home to show his wife Helen and cousin, Charlie Nickles, the surprising find, the money is gone. Unknown to Duncan, Nickles has the money and fences it to Lloyd Farrell, an import/export merchant. Farrell turns to another county employee, Norma Brooks, to find elderly, infirm Josiah Ames, who is near death. Farrell plants $148,000 of the money in Ames' effects, which are bequeathed to his accountant, Albert Keller. Upon seeing the story in the newspaper, Duncan consults Perry Mason, who speaks with Keller. After a woman calls Duncan he visits Farrell who he finds dead. Duncan is leaving the house as the police arrive so Duncan is arrested.

Womanizing businessman Loring Lamont, Jr. wants one of the stenos, Arlene Ferris, to work late. He disappoints his own secretary, Edith Bristol, by giving her the night off. Junior sabotages Ferris's car, so she has to ride with him. On a pretext, he takes Arlene to his Malibu beach house. The Asian caretaker for Lamont Sr., Oolong Kim, asks Junior to repay a long overdue $2,000 loan, which the young slacker blows off. He makes a heavy move on Arlene, who runs out of the house on foot. He chases her in his car and then on foot along the road. Arlene manages to double back and swipe Lamont's car, knocking him into the mud in the bargain. She returns the car to his apartment in town so as not to be accused of stealing it. The next morning her friend Madge suggests Arlene consult with Mason due to the charges Lamont might bring against her. Lamont is found stabbed to death, and Arlene is charged with murder. Perry Mason plays games with Lt. Tragg's identification witness and is accused of planting evidence.

The Case of the Wintry Wife

Cold-hearted Laura Randall dominates the people around her every way she can, from faking being an invalid to blackmail. Her husband Walter, who is about to sell his underwater-sounding invention, asks her for a divorce. Laura knows that Walter now loves her caretaker, Phyllis, so she plots to destroy both the invention and her rival with a time bomb at Walter's lab. Laura forces her brother-in-law Roger who handles her business affairs to build a timed bomb. He had forged a check for an investment in Bruce Sheridan's company that failed which Laura held over Roger. Laura has Phyllis deliver the package to the lab where the invention is stored after Laura takes the sleeping pill given her by Phyllis. Laura follows Phyllis to the lab where she knocks out Phyllis so she is killed in the explosion. Phyllis surviving the bombing decides to see Mason but when she returns home, she learns that Laura was killed after being drugged and dying due to gas from her heater and that she's Lt. Tragg's prime suspect. To save Phyllis, Perry will need not only his usual legal legerdemain and detective acumen, but also some skill at scientific experimentation.

The Case of the Angry Dead Man

After Willard Nesbitt falls out of his fishing boat, he is presumed to have drowned. His wife Eve knows little about their financial situation or his business interests and so seeks Perry Mason's assistance. Her husband was in the process of liquidating his business partnership with Lloyd Castle who had offered a $10,000 settlement to Nesbitt but Nesbitt never signed the contract. Castle forges Nesbitt's signature and gives Mason the $10,000 for Eve. She also gets to cash in her husband's insurance which had a double indemnity clause in case of accidental death. When Castle's company announces a major mining find just after breaking up the partnership, Perry suggests that the signature on the contract may not be Nesbitt's. The case takes a sudden and bizarre twist however when, weeks after his disappearance, Willard Nesbitt is found dead in his home having been killed only a few hours earlier. He had seen the mining news and called Eve to meet him. Eve is charged with murder and Perry sets out to make sense of it all and find the real killer.

The Case of the Blind Man's Bluff

Karl Addison is the manager of an elite jewelry store who advances his plans when he learns that his employer, Charles Slade, is unexpectedly returning from a long absence. Addison has been selling stolen jewelry through the store but he really has his eye on the Kincannon family jewels that are for sale. James Kincannon wants the collection back but technically, they belong to his mother and his family is heavily in debt, thus the planned sale. James needs the money to replay money Slade's dead son embezzled from the company where they work. James had covered the loss in the books but an audit is planned due to a merger. Addison has been practicing stealing the jewels at night without the benefit of sight with the aid of his girlfriend and fellow employee Adele Bentley. His planned eye operation will temporarily blind him and who would accuse a blind man of committing a major burglary? When Addison is found dead however, Jim Kincannon is charged with murder and it's left to Perry Mason to find the true killer.

The Case of the Barefaced Witness

Three years ago, in Piñon City, Fred Swan was caught, having embezzled from his bank. The money wasn't found, and people figured that Iris McKay, whom Fred had dated a few times, knows where it is. The weight of this suspicion caused her to move to L.A. But, now she has received an anonymous tip that Fred is back in Piñon City, so she goes there to confront him. There, she sees various people in an unsuccessful attempt to find Fred. She finds clues that might lead to the stolen money, including a package Fred may have given her aunt. She calls Paul, who is out, so Perry takes her call to look for a package in her apartment her aunt sent her. Perry finds the apartment ransacked. Paul, called in to help, has trouble tracking down Iris and eventually finds local reporter Dan Southern standing over Fred's corpse and Iris's bicycle outside. Iris is found at a nearby home and eventually arrested for murder when her fingerprints are found on the tire iron used to kill Fred. To save Iris, Perry will need to uncover an old scam and a much older scandal. He'll also have to learn why the embezzlement was for the specific amount of $33,750.

The Case of the Difficult Detour

Pete Mallory has invested most of his savings in a new road construction firm and is well on his way to making a profit on his first big contract. He's building a new access road connecting a lake to a new luxury resort development. All is going well until the owner of the land on which the road is being built, Mr. Ames, gets a court order stopping them on the grounds they are trespassing. A quick review from a judge confirms that Mallory does not have a right of way and it soon becomes apparent that he has been had. Edward Parker, who leased the construction equipment, reclaims his equipment - without the equipment, Mallory has no way to finish construction and will be forced into bankruptcy. After checking the maps and surveys, Mallory realizes someone switched surveys on him so he tracks down the people involved, leading to the resort developer, Stuart Benton. He has an altercation with Benton, who is found dead sometime later by his wife and a deputy. Mallory is charged with murder and Perry Mason agrees to defend him after being recommended earlier by Ames to help Mallory.

The Case of the Cowardly Lion

In San Diego on a case, Perry Mason is intrigued when he's contacted by Tony Osgood when a newly arrived baby gorilla Toto is kidnapped and his girlfriend Hilde Fursten threatens to return to Germany. He had just been examined in the zoo hospital nursery by Hilde and was in perfect health. Dr. Walter Braun, a dentist who cares for some of the animals, arrives to check Toto and is outraged at what has happened threatening Hilde. Zoo official Tony Osgood intervenes and he and another zoo employee Boris Zelbowski catch the thief: grounds keeper Harry Beacom, who claims someone in Mexico offered him $7000 for the animal. Perry visits Braun at his dentist office arriving just after Braun has a dispute with a woman over money and he threatens his dental assistant who dates the lion keeper after Perry leaves. When Braun is found lying dead in the lion enclosure however, it's Tony Osgood who is charged with murder and Perry agrees to defend him. There's far more going on that simply the theft of a baby gorilla however.

The Case of the Torrid Tapestry

Leonard Voss is an art dealer of questionable ethics who is shocked that a famous tapestry is about to be put up for auction. His shock is genuine since some 6 years before, he set a fire in a South American gallery that destroyed the tapestry and many other art objects from the collection of Nathan Claver. At that time, Voss framed an employee, Claude Demay, for the arson and Demay served a lengthy prison sentence in Brazil. Voss' shock is compounded when his assistant Brenda Larkin says she saw the same tapestry hanging in the window in a pawn shop nearby. Voss visits the pawn shop where he learns Demay's sister, Sarah, pawned it. He visits her apartment and runs into Demay who wants Voss to give him a piece of the collection Voss stole from Claver in return for the tapestry so Demay can ultimately prove his own innocence. Perry Mason is approached by Demay after the tapestry is stolen from the pawn shop. When Mason and Demay find Voss dead at his office, Demay is charged with murder.

The Case of the Violent Vest

Ad man Herman Albright has just about had it with his wife and her gambling habit. She has just recently lost another $5,000 at the tables - money he will have to borrow from his boss, Walter Caffrey, and he decides to end their marriage. Another incentive to moving is that he's fallen in love with Grace Halley, the model who will be appearing in his new ad campaign. Albright fancies himself something of a ladies' man but has clearly misunderstood anything Grace may have said to him. In fact, she is already married but has kept that a secret so as not to harm her career. She consults with Perry Mason about whether her contract can be broken by either side, but it appears she cannot break it. After Albright is found dead in his car, his wife Ida identifies the body but tells Lt. Tragg the clothes he is wearing are not his normal clothes. The Case of the Misguided Missile

Major Jerry Reynolds is in charge of a rocket project at the Vandenberg Air Force base and they are having major problems. Their most recent launch failed and another attempt is scheduled. It will be the last try for Dan Morgan whose company will lose it's contract to George Huxley's firm if they fail again. The main scientist on the project for Morgan has a severe drinking problem while the Morgan public relations representative is having an affair with Huxley. Reynolds also has to put up with Captain Mike Caldwell from the Inspector General's office who is there to look into the project. Caldwell blames Reynolds for not being promoted so there is a chill in the air. Reynolds plans to resign his commission to take a job with Huxley due to his father's financial problems. He asks Perry to look over the job contract before he signs to make sure there is no conflict of interest. A scientist finds evidence of what caused the last launch failure which is ultimately found hidden in Reynolds hard hat after having been in the possession of Caldwell. When Caldwell is found dead, Reynolds is charged with murder. His old World War II friend Perry Mason agrees to defend him.

Carter Gilman seeks Perry Mason's assistance in finding out why a female private detective is blackmailing the wife of a 'friend'. Gilman isn't using his real name, however, and the 'friend' needing help is actually himself. Gilman has a daughter, Muriell, from a previous marriage and is now married to Nancy, whose daughter, Glamis, is still living with them. After receiving a call from the Gilman women when Carter goes missing and Muriell finds money with something red on it in her father's workshop, Perry visits their home, finding Carter's woodworking shop in disarray with $10,000 scattered on the floor with red stain on it. When Paul Drake tells Perry the Las Vegas private detective was found dead, Perry starts to piece together what may have happened. When Glamis' boyfriend, Hartley Elliott, tells Perry he saw Glamis running out of the workshop in the early morning hours, it seems he may have sealed the girl's fate.

J.J. Gideon is worried that his grandson, David, has taken up with the same woman that led his son, David's uncle, to possibly have embezzled $100,000 from their bank and eventually commit suicide. Gideon finds David in his office supposedly studying a law book but in reality he is there with her. David is quite in love with the older Dorine Hopkins, who had worked at the bank until fired and now called back recently to assist forensic accountant Lawrence Comminger with a audit requested by J.J. Gideon. David has an altercation with Dorine's husband, Tony, when both catch Dorine who was trying to move for the third time in three days. Dorine tells David that she needs $10,000 to pay Tony to get what he is holding over her but she won't reveal the details. Dorine informs David she raised the money on her own but Tony still refused to give her the manila folder with the documents. David decides to retrieve the documents himself but is knocked out after finding them. Later, when Tony is found dead, David is charged with murder and Perry Mason defends him.

The Case of the Guilty Clients

Jeff and Lola Bronson go through a bitter divorce, with Jeff giving her an equity position in his aviation firm which he has an option to buy from her. They are about to test a new aircraft design with test pilot Bill Ryder, having only one more series of tests left to undertake. It doesn't go well and Bill has to parachute to safety while the plane crashes. On the side, Leander Walker wants to buy into the company but Jeff wants nothing to do with him due to his reputation for taking over companies. Violet Ryder thinks her husband may have been having an affair with Lola. She and Lola both believe Bill caused the test failure for money and confront him about it. It's no surprise, therefore, when the test pilot is found dead and Jeff is charged with murder. Perry defends him but, when the case starts to look bed for him, Lola stands up in court and says she did it, to which Jeff replies that he's the one who did it. Perry thinks they're both innocent.
