The Case of the Restless Redhead

A nervous red headed Evelyn Bagby returns to her apartment at night after her shift as a waitress. She finds a snub nosed 38 Colt revolver in her cigarette case which is not hers. She calls Perry Mason whose answering service patches her through to him. She is calling due to a previous run-in with the police where she was accused of stealing jewelry but was acquitted. Perry has her go to a motel in Hollywood but on the way there a hooded man tries to force her off the road. She fires the gun toward the car but not at the man causing him to go off the road. She brings the gun to Perry who drives out to the scene of the accident only to find the man dead from a bullet wound and homicide there. The man killed had stolen $1500 from Evelyn when she first came to Hollywood. Paul Drake learns that two identical guns were bought by the prominent man Mervyn Aldritch for him and his fiancé, an actress. Perry decides to fire a second gun at the scene later to confuse the police to extract the truth about the people involved and find the real killer.

The Case of the Sleepwalker's Niece

Unhappily-married Doris Cole finds her husband Peter sleepwalking near her bed with a knife in his hand; Doris accuses him of trying to kill her and decides to divorce him. A year later, one day before the divorce is to be finalized, Peter's business partner Frank Maddox visits Doris and offers her $100,000 to hold off on the divorce. Then Maddox and his attorney Ralph Duncan visit Peter and his stepbrother Phillip Kendall. Maddox wants $500,000 for his share of their company, which is about the worth of the whole company, or Doris will not grant the divorce. Peter's niece and secretary Edna Hammar calls Perry Mason to help her uncle, who is engaged to remarry. Perry intervenes, suggesting Maddox and Duncan stay at Phillip's home that night. Phillip is found stabbed to death the next morning after he and Maddox had traded rooms. Peter is arrested for the murder with the belief he stabbed Philip expecting Maddox to be in the bed. Edna's boyfriend Steve helps Perry by delivering papers and watching Doris.

The Case of the Nervous Accomplice

Sybil Granger's husband is having an affair with Roxy Howard who lives in the lone model home in a future subdivision. The property was to be subdivided but with the belief that oil has been found there those plans have been canceled. Sybil hires Perry to buy shares in the project to stop the project with the hope of getting her husband back. Perry buys shares in the project from George Lutts. Perry uses the bylaws of the organization to stop the oil exploration. Lutts based on information he receives from his daughter and her husband Herbert Dean meets with Sybil to try to buy the shares back from Perry. As they meet at a site overlooking the subdivision, Lutts is shot. Sybil runs to her car. However, she runs it into a ditch trying to get away and is forced to take a cab to escape. After Meeting with Perry, he has her and a friend take the same cab to confuse the police. Her gun is missing and the police believe she used it to shoot Lutts from a short distance but she insists he was shot from a distance. Perry has to disprove the police version of the shooting with courtroom tricks.

Donald Briggs has brought Lois Reed back to a small town in his attempt to blackmail multiple people. He was hired by Clyde Waters to investigate the background of young Marv Adams. Adams is a college student with a knowledge of chemistry engaged to Clyde's daughter Helen. Briggs has contacted several people including Mrs. Wilma Adams and Mr. Waters from whom he wants additional money as Marv's father was executed for murder. Clyde Waters contacts Perry Mason to check out Briggs and the information he has obtained. When Perry and Paul Drake attempt to talk to Briggs, they find him dead. When the police determine Briggs was gassed, they assume Marv Adams is guilty due to his knowledge of chemistry. Perry who has looked into the trial of Marv's father, believes the father did not receive a fair trial due to poor representation and the unwillingness of the both the prosecutor and defense to involve a Miss X who was the daughter of the local minister. In order for Perry to prove his client's innocence, he reopens the old case which touches a nerve with many including the judge.

The Case of the Sulky Girl

Twenty-three year old Fran Celane is furious with her uncle Edward Norton who controls her fortune until her twenty-fifth birthday due to an absolute trust her father created. After another stormy fight with her uncle Fran storms out of the house and drives to Perry's office where she barges in to see him. After explaining what she wants, Perry agrees to check out the situation. He has Paul Drake investigate everyone related to Norton. Perry and Paul soon determine she has a boyfriend named Rod Gleason. Perry visits Rod where he reveals he believes Rod and Fran are already married and expecting a baby. Later, that evening Norton has a meeting with his lawyer Arthur Crinston as Rod comes to the house to visit Fran. At about the same time the police receive a call from Norton saying he wishes to report a crime and then that he is being threatened by his niece. As Norton's secretary Donald Graves leaves with Crinston and the man driving him, he says he sees Rod kill Norton through a window. Perry now must help clear Rod for Fran.

The Case of the Silent Partner

Harry Marlow who owns a chain of florist shops wants a share of Mildred Kimber's lucrative orchid business. He hires Sam Lynk to run a crooked card game to obtain stock in the business from Mildred's husband Bob who has a gambling habit. Sam wins the shares as he receives a call from his girlfriend. After a scuffle between Bob and Marlow, Sam and hostess Lola Florey quickly get Bob out of the room but Sam reneges on giving Marlow the shares. Lola who is miffed at the lack of attention from Sam decides to tell Mildred about the crooked game and provide proof to her and Mason the next morning. However, that evening Perry receives a call from Lola saying she has been poisoned by a box of chocolates she received at the club. Perry contacts Tragg who is able to get her address. She is rescued in time by Perry and Tragg. Perry realizing Mildred is in serious trouble visits the sick woman. He goes to see Sam Lynk but finds him dead with Mildred's prescription box near the body. Perry has to prove her innocence but never goes to court.

The Case of the Angry Mourner

Carla Adrian is watching home movies with neighbor Mark Cushing who is in a wheelchair after an accident. After the movie, Cushing makes a pass at Carla ripping her blouse causing her to leave. Later that evening Cushing's neighbor Sam Burris awakens his wife Betsy telling her he heard a shot. They then hear a scream causing Betsy to get up and look at the Cushing house with binoculars. She sees broken glass followed by Belle Adrian, Carla's mother, walking inside the house. Sam calls the sheriff who finds Cushing murdered and Carla's car parked nearby. Due to rain that night, footsteps are found connecting the Cushing house with the car, the Adrian house, and the Burris house. Perry on vacation in a nearby cabin receives an early visit from Belle asking for help in keeping her daughter's name out of the commotion surrounding the case. However, Perry soon finds himself having to defend Belle from the charge of murdering Cushing based on evidence the Sheriff found at the Adrian house and nearby including the gun.

The Case of the Crimson Kiss

Fay Allison sends her fiancé Dane Grover off to his bachelor party then relieves her roommate Anita Bonsal who wants to go out. Anita leaves the apartment but instead of going out goes to the next floor to see Carver Clement who is her boyfriend. Clement is supposedly getting a divorce so that he and Anita can marry although Anita had originally had her eyes on Dane Grover. Clements says he will be down to the car shortly so Anita goes there to wait but after nearly an hour she returns to the apartment she shares with Fay where they decide to make hot chocolate. Later that night Fay's aunt Louise Marlow arrives for the wedding using a key she was sent only to find both girls in bed knocked out. She calls her friend Perry who sends a doctor. He and Della arrive to find the girls have been drugged and a key to Clements apartment in Fay's purse. When they enter Clements apartment, they find him dead with a red lipstick kiss on the forehead. Perry is forced to save Fay's life twice when the evidence is against her piles up.

Peter Handsell drops his female partner Veronica Dale off to be picked up by Edgar Ferrell, who is expected to make a pass at her. Ferrell tells Veronica that he's a film producer who might have a "position" for her. He takes her to a large house his company uses as a set, but as he offers her a drink another car arrives and he sends her out the back door; when she hears a shot, she decides to leave. She tries to call Peter at a gas station, but after getting no answer she gets a ride to Los Angeles with John Addison, who happens to be Ferrell's business partner. The next day Addison calls Perry to ask him to get Veronica out of jail: she's been arrested for vagrancy. Later, Addison calls Perry again: Peter Handsell is blackmailing him because he helped Veronica. Perry tries to set up a sting for Handsell, then discovers that Addison is in deeper trouble: Ferrell was shot at the house the night he picked up Veronica. Perry must decipher all the circumstantial evidence against his client.

P.I. Jason Beckmeyer awaits the arrival of Ed Davenport at a testing lab. When he arrives the technician reports that the sandwiches Davenport provided were loaded with arsenic which Davenport claims his wife made. He returns home where he confronts his wife Myrna and her cousin Louise Ansel with the news saying he suspects Myrna poisoned her uncle. He has left a letter outlining the details at his real estate office in case of his death. Myrna has packed his bags for a trip including a package of chocolates for an preplanned trip by Davenport. Later Louise takes a call from a doctor saying Davenport is very sick at a motel from apparent poisoning. Louise doesn't tell Myrna the truth as she convinces Myrna to see an attorney about the charges made by Davenport. At Perry's office he tells them he can't do anything about the letter unless Davenport is dead but he is concerned about it. Louise then tells about the call so her and Myrna go to the motel. Davenport dies while they are there but when the police arrive the body is gone. Even Louise turns on Myrna when Davenport's body is finally found.

At a Beverly Hills beauty salon, two women answer to the name "Mrs. Joseph Bradford" and both have identical keys to the same address. Martha Bradford, who currently lives there, tries to contact her husband, but he refuses to talk to her; he has a habit of mistreating her. That night the other woman, Rita, enters the house, scaring Martha, who finds Rita's wet footprints. The next day Martha contacts Perry for help in finding her husband to learn the truth. Joe's second-in-command, Jack Harper, sends them on a wild-goose chase where they meet Larry Sands and a sheepherder who have little good to say about Joe. When confronted, Harper tells them Joe is on his boat in the harbor. Perry and Della visit the boat and find Joe Bradford dead and a crooked candle in a hurricane lantern that has burned evenly. Martha's fingerprints are on the candle although she swears to Perry she was never on the boat. Why was the candle crooked and how does it fit into the case?

The Case of the Negligent Nymph

A beachcomber finds a bottle with a note on the beach. The note accuses the nephew George Alder of Agatha Alder of killing her on the yacht Sea Witch. He takes a copy of the note to George Alder hoping for a small payoff. While he and Alder discuss the issue, Alder's drunk wife Karen enters the room looking for more alcohol. George calls in his secretary Sally Fenner to remove his drunk wife. After the incident Sally quits fed up with George's treatment of people. That night Sally enters the closely guarded house to recover the note but knocks over a lamp drawing the attention of the guard and his dog. She runs down the beach into the ocean to escape as the guard fires his gun and releases the dog. Perry and Paul in Perry's boat seeing her race to rescue her. She shows Perry the note but claims she took nothing else not realizing George's dead body was in the room. The next day the police are after her for murder as Perry has Della hide her while he investigates the evidence including Agatha's Mexican companion who recently bought a restaurant.

The Case of the Moth-Eaten Mink

While Perry and Della have dinner at Morey Allen's restaurant, their waitress Dixie Dayton leaves suddenly and is run over by a car after shots are heard. Morey says he knows little about her as she started working there only 10 days ago. The police are soon there but Perry notices that one tough looking man isn't too interested in what's happening. Morey asks Perry to take charge of Dixie's mink coat, which makes Perry wonder how she could afford one. He finds a pawn ticket in the collar and Paul traces it to a gun, one that was used in the recent murder of a police officer. The man Perry saw in the restaurant is George Fayette, a very shady character with a criminal background. When Fayette is found murdered, Morey and Dixie are jointly charged with his murder and Perry defends them. Perry and Paul must contend with Lt. Tragg and Sgt. Jaffrey who show little restraint in their push to solve the murder of a fellow police officer.

Albert Tydings has been stealing money from the a trust account belonging to Carol Stanley. His partner, Robert Dawson, demands it be repaid but Tydings has something on him that prevents Dawson from going to the police. Tydings took $60,000 out of the account and knows that the company clerk, Richard Ellis, has taken $20,000. He gives Ellis a day to return it. Tydings is found dead by Carol Stanley who had arranged a meeting with him to ensure her investments were safe but she and Dawson foolishly move the body. Late that night Dawson calls Perry and stops by with Stanley hid under a dark veil. He gives Perry two $1000 bills as a retainer. In addition he gives Perry half of a $10,000. Perry will receive the other half if his help is needed later. Abigail Leeds, who has known Carol since she was a baby, is a forthright woman who hires Perry Mason to sort this all out and make sure that Carol isn't convicted of a crime she did not commit.

The Case of the Fan Dancer's Horse

After a robbery attempt at the Callender ranch, a shot is fired at the robber leaving on a horse. Later, Perry and Della, returning to Los Angles, witness a car turnover. Perry collects a box of possessions which contains a couple of ostrich feathers and a pair of shoes with the initials LF. He places a blind ad in the paper that brings first John Callender and then Arthur Sheldon followed by Cherie Chi-Chi looking for a seven year old palomino horse. The horse used in the robbery attempt belonged to Lois Fenton who is married to John Callender. Perry learns Cherie is a fan dancer who took over the name and act of Lois Fenton when Fenton married. Lois' brother is thought to have tried to steal some checks Callender is holding over Fenton. Sheldon, trying to help Lois, took a hotel room across from Callender. Perry has him leave and Paul's men take over watching Callender's room. When Perry and Paul try to contact Callender, they find him stabbed with his own sword. Perry's case is looking difficult as Paul's men are identifying Lois as visiting Callender last.

Young Nadine returns home with a gift for Capt. Hugo and a surprise - she is engaged to John Locke. Hugo tells her she should tell her uncle Martin Wellman. The cantankerous uncle tells her she can't get married and has her look at papers he threatens to show her fiancé. Nadine visits Locke in his lab where she steals some potassium cyanide pills while he is distracted. When she returns home, Martin is asking for his nightly hot chocolate. He has just told his other relative Marian Newburn and her husband Lester that they too have been cut out of his will. Nadine takes Martin his drink and is summoned again later to find him dying saying he was poisoned. Nadine goes under the care of a psychiatrist who recorded her confession under a truth serum. She says she poisoned her uncle and threw the evidence in a lake. The doctor takes the recording to Perry who talks to Nadine but soon finds himself the target of the police for interfering with evidence when he has a boy look for the bottle in the lake but it only has saccharin in it.

The Case of the Sun Bather's Diary

Perry Mason is approached by a beautiful woman, Arlene Dowling, who wants him to recover a house trailer that was recently stolen. It's an odd case from the beginning and when the trailer is quickly located, she's prepared to buy it off the vendor rather than just take possession. When Perry learns that Arlene's father is in prison having been convicted in the Mercantile Bank theft, he thinks there's far more going on than meets the eye. After Perry receives two sets of $1500 cash payments in the mail (one set too many), he's pretty sure he's being set up. A meeting with Arlene's dad's former coworker George Ballard confirms Perry's suspicions. Perry is promptly served with a subpoena to appear in court. DA Hamilton Burger soon has Perry in the Grand Jury room and when Perry's testimony contradicts that of a police Burger charges him with perjury. Meanwhile, Ballard is murdered and Arlene is charged. Perry agrees to defend her. In a strange turn of events, he is also called as a witness for the prosecution.

Elaine Barton is being blackmailed by her husband Harry Pitkin. He is threatening to tell her boyfriend Ross Hollister who wants to marry her she is married but Hollister is having a private detective agency investigate her. Hollister's partner Sheila Cromwell stops by to pick up financial papers Hollister is supposed to check out but he hasn't finished the task. He agrees to drop them at Elaine's apartment with a key under the mat so Cromwell can pick them up the next morning as Hollister is going on a business trip. Perry receives a note in the mail with a key to Elaine's apartment indicating he would find a witness to a hit and run accident he is handling. He finds Elaine asleep but after waking her he discovers a license number and a small gun. Elaine asks him to help her with the blackmail but Perry doesn't believe her. The license number takes Perry to Stephen Argyle who employs Pitkin as a driver. He denies the charges even though his car shows damage. Perry receives a call from Elaine whose apartment contains Pitkin's body. Hollister is still missing as Perry tries to prove Elaine's innocence.

The Case of the Haunted Husband

Claire Olger is picked up hitchhiking by ladies' man Michael Greeley after her purse and ticket were stolen. He makes a pass and they struggle, causing the car to crash into an oncoming truck. The truck driver is killed, and when she regains consciousness, Claire is charged with auto theft and manslaughter as the only occupant of the wrecked car. The friend Claire was coming to live with Doris Stephanak asks Perry to take the unorthodox case which he does at the urging of Della. The owner of the car denies any knowledge but later, Greeley turns up dead in Claire's room forcing the police to drop the original charges but instead charge her with the murder of Greeley. Perry takes Doris up on her offer to help by having her meet the secretary of Jerry Heywood but he too ends up dead. Perry Mason must stay one step ahead of the police to solve the mystery as he one ups Tragg.

The Case of the Lonely Heiress

Edmund Lacey runs a lonely hearts magazine where people respond to ads in it. One particular ad has been placed by a woman who says she inherited a considerable fortune and is quite good looking. She receives volumes of replies but has not responded to any of them. Lacey contacts Paul Drake to help determine who she is saying the postal service is concerned he may be abetting fraud. Paul is able to compose a letter that does get a response that Lacey intercepts. His real desire is to have the con man Charles Barnaby make contact with her to swindle her. On the other end she is looking for the man who she blames for the death of her sister. Barnaby makes contact saying he is land poor with money needed to finish drilling for oil on his property. He falls for the heiress Marylin Clark who is indeed quite beautiful. He decides to cut Lacey out of most of the profits while at the same time his female partner Delores Coterro becomes jealous of the beautiful Marylin. When Barnaby dies from poisoned champagne just before their marriage, her step-brother George Moore brings in Perry to defend her.

The Case of the Green-Eyed Sister

Private investigator Arthur West tracks down the drunk J. J. Stanley on skid row. He convinces him to make a phone call he records to Ned Bain about the two of them embezzling money from a bank. The statue of limitations on the crime are up but Bain could be sued civilly for the funds. His daughter Harriet Bain handles most of her ailing father's duties so she is summoned by West to hear the tape. She decides to contact Perry for help but he has other plans which Della persuades him to delay. Harriet is the less attractive of two daughters who is engaged to Addison Doyle. She is afraid this news will cause him to break the engagement. Perry is able to degauss a copy of the tape delaying West and allowing Paul to investigate. Ned Bain visits Stanley followed by an invitation by West for Perry and Harriet to meet him at West's apartment. Perry and Della arrive to find a note on the door and hear Harriet scream as she finds the body of Stanley in West's kitchen. West has recorded the whole event leading to murder charges against Harriet whose fingerprints are on the icepick.

The Case of the Fugitive Nurse

Janet Morris knows her husband, a doctor, is having an affair with his nurse Gladys Strome but up to now has refused to agree to a divorce. She has the police track and arrest a close friend of her husband who is trying to help the doctor move some money but the husband clears the man. He's about to fly off in his own airplane when Janet meets him at the airport to tell him she will give him the divorce he wants. She also gives him a thermos of coffee for his trip. When the plane crashes, there is little left but the autopsy on the remains shows Morris had been drugged. Janet is charged with her husband's death and Perry defends her. After a more detailed inspection of the crash site reveals the dead pilot is not the doctor but his friend. Then Dr. Morris is found alive in Mexico living with Gladys, the case takes a sudden twist.

She's supposed to meet Carlin in a restaurant for the exchange but when he leaves a message with the Maitre d' for her to come to his house, she gets Perry Mason to deliver it for her. When both Carlin and Arthur Fargo are found dead, Marian is charged with murder and Perry defends her.

The Case of the Deadly Double

Helen suffers from continuing nightmares that involve memories she cannot explain so she agrees to return to Dr. Maitland. Helen and her brother visit Perry to retain him to defend them in case something happened to Reed. Perry starts by looking for Mr. Reed who seems to be missing. Using the purse, they find an apartment connected to a promiscuous woman named Joyce Martel who is having an affair with Johnny Hale. Perry and Paul find David Reed murdered in Joyce Martel's apartment. Crane is charged with the crime. It is up to Perry Mason and Dr. Maitland to unravel the mystery.

The Case of the Empty Tin

Doris Hocksley with John Lowell reads an ad in San Francisco in the paper looking for the heiress to the Hocksley fortune worth $2,000,000. Lowell pushes Doris to reply to the ad which she does. She has an interview with Alan Neil who is conducting all the preliminary interviews for Elston Carr to weed out obvious impostors. Doris has limited but accurate documentation but is missing a couple of key components Carr is seeking. Although he denies her application, Neil makes a veiled offer that if Doris cooperated she might get the money if she shared half of it with him but she doesn't accept the offer. Doris retains Perry to help with her claim. Perry visits Carr learning that Carr is giving the money to the heir himself. He and his two partners made a fortune in China until the Korean war when one of the partners betrayed the other two. Perry visits Miriam Hocksley who may also have a claim to the fortune. That night Perry receives a call from Neil's secretary saying she heard a shot after seeing Carr's body and has trapped the killer in the library. Doris is found with the body and she has fired the gun.

The Case of the Half-Wakened Wife

Scott Shelby is jealous of the attention he believes handy man Frank Lawton is paying to his wife Marion. Scott sneaks his shotgun out of the house in a golf bag after loading it being careful to put no fingerprints on the shells. At a location away from his home he fires one barrel of the double barrel gun and then returns it to the rack in his house. That night from the boat house he calls Frank for help and to get his shotgun as he cuts the phone line there. Frank hears a shot, dresses, and retrieves the shotgun. He runs to the boat house but finds no one until Marion arrives. Meanwhile, Perry receives a telegram from Frank saying his unlucky army buddy is about to be arrested for murder. Perry and Della leave to meet Frank only to find the sheriff's department there looking for the missing Scott Shelby. The telegram and Frank's writings force Det. Sgt. Phillip Dix to arrest Frank. Perry believes Shelby skipped town due to being in debt but when his body turns up, the burden of evidence against Frank is overwhelming.

The Case of the Desperate Daughter

Stefan Riker stops at a local bar to ask Gary Marshall if he recognizes a lady in a picture he has. Gary denies knowing her but has to go to pick up his boss' wife - Lisa Bannister - the woman in the picture. After picking her up, he stops before returning home to tell Lisa about the incident but that he did not identify her. She thanks him but he then proceeds to kiss her but she slaps him. Later, Stefan arrives at the Bannister home asking to see Lisa saying he is her cousin. Doris Bannister quickly calls her step-mother to meet Stefan but Lisa does not show great happiness at seeing Stefan. Lisa's crippled husband who uses two canes to walk, is very quiet. When Doris asks why, he states he understood Lisa had no relatives. Later, Doris catches Lisa about to commit suicide. Lisa explains her father is the head of the Communist Party in East Germany and she is in the US illegally. Doris decides to distract Stefan by visiting him in her finest and making a pass at him. Later, she appears in Perry's office saying she has amnesia. Perry asks in the paper if anyone knows her but finds she is charged with murdering Stefan.

The Case of the Daring Decoy

Daniel P. Conway is fighting for control of Cal Texas Oil with Warner Griffith. Conway returns to his private office to find Rose Calvert in his office. He confronts her about her activity but she only admits to straightening his office. Amelia Armitage, unknown to Conway appears pleading with him to work harder to keep control of the company to preserve the stockholder's investment. Later, after Rose calls Griffith to tell him she has the papers he wants, Conway receives a call telling him to go to a phone booth to wait for a call for further help. There he receives a call to go to room 709 at another building. There he finds Rose dead and a gun from his company's accounting office which he removes. After contacting Perry, Perry goes to see Griffith's wife who admits contacting Conway but missed him at the phone booth. She gives Perry a picture of Rose her husband took who may be the murder victim. Tragg picks up Conway who is identified by the elevator operator who has a unique way of identifying people by their shoes which Perry can't refute.

The Case of the Hesitant Hostess

Frederic Archer III exits a dance club to meet with dancer Kim Lane outside in a car to confirm a payoff. That night a drunk Kim tells her roommate how she will enjoy her new life based on her new found knowledge. The next day Inez asks their boss Martha Rayburn at work if she has seen Archer as Kim is missing. As she leaves Archer enters in a panic asking for help. Later, the police arrest Albert Sanders for robbing Archer. Perry decides to pick up the derelict's case pro bono knowing his history. However, when Kim Lane is found dead, the charge is upgraded to murder. Rayburn says she was with Archer during the robbery but Paul finds the hostess Inez who says she was fired by Rayburn at the club at the same she was with Archer. Inez agrees to return from Las Vegas to testify but disappears outside the courtroom. Paul tracks her down but she escapes so Perry and Della trail her to her apartment in Las Vegas. There Joe Gibbs takes a postcard to Kim from Universal Models at gunpoint. Perry has Della do some sleuthing at the agency as he tries to put the pieces together.

The Case of the Screaming Woman

Influential columnist Mary K. Davis desperately wants a baby in order to keep her diplomat husband, Ralph Davis, from leaving her for another woman. She enters the office of Dr. George Barnes and nurse Leona Walsh to steal a book of the doctor's adoption records. She will return the book if Dr. Barnes will provide her a baby which she has told her husband she is expecting in order to keep him. After visiting Davis at her home to plead for the book, Leona consults with Perry Mason for advice. Dr. Barnes runs a hospital where single women who are pregnant enter under the alias of the woman who is going to adopt the baby. Dr. Barnes then generates false birth certificates under the false names. The book contains all the records on such births. Mary's secretary visit's Mary's lawyer, Eugene Jarech, who then visits Perry hoping to share the information in the book, illegally. When Mary K. is murdered, Leona confesses to the crime, and Perry must cut a Gordian knot of intrigue to get at the truth.

The Case of the Fiery Fingers

George Gordon receives a phone call from his girlfriend Charlotte Lynch which is overhead by his wife Louise on the extension in her bedroom. George is upset at the call saying Louise may overhear it and that letters from Charlotte are missing which he believes his wife has confiscated. After the call Louise confronts George who accidentally knocks her down the stairs when she slaps him. She fully recovers from the fall but refuses to leave her room only allowing her elderly nurse's aide Nora Mae Quincey and her cousin Vicky Braxton in her room. She won't divorce George but decides to leave her money to a medical center plus a $350 monthly stipend to Vicky. George asks Nora Mae to give Louise some pills to sedate her but Nora Mae thinking they are poison consults Perry who tells her not to use the pills. None the less the next morning Louise dies of arsenic poisoning with Nora Mae accused because of jewelry she "borrowed" from Louise. Perry starts out thinking that George is the real killer as this is his second wife with money to die.

Carl Houser secretly loads up a money-belt in the bank where he worked but has quit, and takes his wife Anna and their daughter Laura on a cruise. Coincidentally, Perry Mason and Della Street are on the same ship, along with a patient confined to a wheel chair whose face is completely covered with bandages. Anna consults Perry about the fact her husband is carrying almost $100,000 in cash which she believes he embezzled from the bank. One night, Carl disappears overboard, and Anna is charged with murder when her wet dress shows she was on the deck in the bad weather with him. Perry notices, however, that a picture of the Houser family has disappeared. The investigation clears Carl of embezzlement, but the Chicago mob might somehow be involved when Anna tells Perry the family moved from Chicago after Carl was on a mob trial jury. The questions for Perry are: who has jurisdiction in the case, and where is the mysterious patient?

After a night of gambling, Glenn Falkner's losing streak continues so he returns to his office. George Castle enters to present Falkner's IOU for immediate payment. He hopes to force Falkner to sell him a piece of valuable property for a cheap price but Falkner refuses to sell so Castle shoots him saying Falkner's daughter will sell. Later, Castle confronts Stephanie Falkner with the IOU but she refuses saying she must talk to her adviser Michael Garvin Sr. Castle visits Garvin's secretary Eva Elliott who he put in the job and has a bad history Castle knows about. Garvin and Stephanie visit Perry who then visits Castle to put pressure on Castle for a better price knowing he is squeezing Castle who made promises about the property. After leaving, he sees Stephanie enter Castle's building followed by the police and Lt. Tragg. Castle is dead. Garvin has three identical guns one of which is the murder weapon. His son has one, he keeps one in his safe and he carries one which he gave to Stephanie. Stephanie is arrested with the gun that killed Castle as Perry must decipher the changes in gun ownership.

Sheila Bowers returns home to find her roommate Enid Griffin passed out from overdosing on sleeping pills. She calls for the police and a doctor, who help Enid recover. Enid had seen the news that Stewart Brent, for whom she and Sheila work, has suddenly married Anne Brent in Las Vegas; Enid, Brent's private secretary, has been in love with him. When Stewart returns to work, he receives a visit from Arthur Binney, who wants $30,000 in a week to not reveal that Anne Brent was in prison for a year. Stewart hires Paul Drake to verify Binney's charges, which he does. Binney has Stewart check into a motel room where Binney knocks Stewart out as he enters the door. A little later Stewart awakens to find the money gone and Binney shot with his gun in the connected room. As he sees the body, the motel night manager, Harry Mitchell, enters and calls the police. Stewart had found a single earring that he hides in a towel with lipstick in the back seat of Lt. Tragg's car. The only clue is a blonde visitor, but every woman involved is a blonde. Stewart has confessed to protect his wife, but Perry believes that he is innocent.

The Case of the Lazy Lover

After her stepfather Bertrand Allred finds a body in the driveway, Patricia Faxon fears that she might have struck him while backing out. The injured man, Robert Fleetwood, is alive but seems to have lost his memory and has no idea who he is. Concerned that her daughter could be charged with a criminal offense, Patricia's mother Lucille retains Perry Mason as her attorney by sending him a check in the mail but no other information. When Perry contacts Patricia, she readily admits what happened: her mother and stepfather took Fleetwood to a motel where they're tending to him. Perry and Paul go there but find the motel room open and empty. Perry returns to see Patricia and Lucille for further details. During their conversation, Lt. Tragg arrives to pick up Lucille for the murder of Fleetwood, but while there he learns that it was Lucille's husband who was killed instead in her car at the bottom of a cliff. Paul finds Fleetwood staying at a nearby farm. In the end, Perry matches wits with an experienced tracker to solve the case.

At an import/export company, secretary Lorraine Stevens is working late when Philip Larkin again asks her out, but she refuses after a heated argument about his intentions. Later she goes to a jewelry store to pick up a package as asked in a note, but there's no package, the store's about to close, and she tries unsuccessfully to phone her bosses. At about the same time, Joseph Harrison is at his ex-wife's house discovering that his stepson Philip has been shot. He leaves but returns later to find the police investigating. His prints are found on the gun case for the WWI German gun used but not on the gun itself. After he is arrested, his ex-wife Ethel Harrison visits Perry to hire him to defend her ex-husband for her son's murder, which Perry and Della find strange. A piece of film turns up showing Joseph hitting Philip; this adds to the evidence, but Mrs. Harrison has disappeared. Perry and Burger look for her, but nobody will talk and Paul has no luck as Perry must deduce the relationships of the players.

When Marian Shaw returns to her apartment she tells her roommate Diana Reynolds to move out. When Diana refuses, Marian pulls a gun which goes off during their fight. Later, Diana, now sporting a black eye, hires Perry Mason after being accused of theft and losing her job. Diana was working for the wealthy Bartlett family and was involved with patriarch Mathew Bartlett's stepson, Tony Davis. Tony's mother Helen Bartlett fired Diana after (she claims) finding some of her jewelry among Diana's things. Diana had recently become aware that her roommate Marian was carrying on with Tony as well, but it was Tony who gave her the black eye. To complicate matters further, the elder Bartlett has only recently become aware that he has a grandson and will seemingly do anything to get custody. Tony discovered and stole a letter about the grandson from Diana's desk. When Marian Shaw is murdered, Diana is charged and Perry defends her.

Perry Mason is drawn into a strange case when an attractive young woman, Patricia Taylor, arrives at his office claiming to be the temp they requested from an agency. She puts in a days work and Della even compliments her on the quality of her output. She suddenly vanishes, however, and they learn that she wasn't from the agency at all. It turns out she was in the offices of diamond merchants on the floor above Perry's and there may have been a theft. When one of the partners in the diamond business is murdered another partner, Duane Jefferson, is charged. Perry defends him and Jefferson claims to have been in the company of a woman but refuses to identify the married woman's name. Nothing is at it seems however and it's left to Perry to sort out the facts with the help of Della Street and Paul Drake.

Donna Knox cashes a check for $20,000 from the elderly Daniel Reed after Reed overrides his nephew and niece when the bank calls. The money is shared by Knox and her partner Maury Lewis with $500 for their helper Dave Kemp, a busted private detective. Kemp expected half the money. Perry Mason takes on the case of Daniel Reed after his friend, Millie Foster seeks his help. Daniel has been confined to a psychiatric institution against his will, with a diagnosis of senile dementia. It seems that the elderly Daniel's nephew and scheming wife, Willard and Arlene Scott, are behind it all. Perry files a writ of habeas corpus and gets the judge to agree but Daniel escapes from the institution before he gets the news. When Daniel finds his old business partner Monty Siwel dead, he is charged with murder and Perry defends him. D.A. Hamilton Burger seems to be getting information out of Perry's office and thinking his office is bugged, Perry tries to feed Burger false information. It almost backfires on him.
