Tommy's factories are still running and he sees a lucrative opportunity in promoting Gold's son Bonnie, a promising boxer, but disaster looms when Jessie Eden calls a strike and Changretta visits Tommy with a scary message.

Tommy brings in blackleg workers to break the strike before calling a family business meeting and planning how to beat Changretta's gang, two of whom corner Arthur, who disposes of them. Suspecting Jessie may have inadvertently led them to the factory Tommy visits her and she reminds him of his former lover Greta, who died young. Tommy relives her memory with Lizzie, whom he puts in charge of running two charities n Greta's name. Meanwhile Aunt Polly goes to meet an old acquaintance.

Tommy, still hit by strikes, is visited by May Carleton, who discovers another of his lucrative side-lines, selling gin to Prohibition-hit America, whilst Ada takes Jessie for a drink on Tommy's behalf and Tommy himself calls on the services of Alfie Solomons.

Having survived an attack by Changretta's gang Tommy learns that Lizzie is pregnant by him and that Polly set the gang up. As a result she and Michael leave Birmingham with the Golds. Changretta travels to London to arrange a deal with Alfie Solomons to enable his men to be present at the boxing match between Alfie's man Goliath and Bonnie but finds that Alfie strikes a hard bargain. Ada, questioned by the British army over her past as a Communist party member, is angry that Tommy has a business contract with them whilst Tommy goes on a charm offensive with Jessie Eden.
