1924 and Tommy is marrying Grace Burgess in a lavish society wedding whose guests include red-coated army officers invited by Grace - much to the annoyance of Tommy's family. Arthur makes an awkward speech and Lizzie has cause for anger. A surprise visitor is Russian princess Tatiana Petrovna, whose wedding gift is a considerable sum of money which will be paid if Tommy supplies arms to a group of exiled white Russians. With Tommy now a seemingly respectable businessman with a charitable foundation Grace is uneasy about his acceptance, especially when another murder takes place, whilst Polly has an admirer.

However, thanks to Polly's confession he is arrested for plotting to kill him, beaten up and forced into an arrangement, giving him little choice but to betray the Russians to save his family.

Returning to Birmingham Tommy recruits a team of tunnellers to help him steal the jewels and informs Polly, now having an affair with Ruben, that Michael knows Father Hughes of old and is prepared to kill him. Polly is not pleased at the news.
