After 10 years spent in the military, Asa Farrell (Joe Anderson) returns home to his clan of mountain folk living near Blackburg, Kentucky, isolated from society. Lady Farrell (Phyllis Somerville), the family matriarch, decides to cede power to her son, Big Foster (David Morse), who has Asa locked in a cage for having abandoned his family. Soon after, a mining company gets permission from the nearby town to evict the Farrell family from the mountains and start extracting coal, while Deputy Sheriff Wade Houghton (Thomas M. Wright) is tasked with the eviction process. When Lady Farrell pardons Asa and decides to not cede power after all, a bloody war against the mining company and a harsh internal power struggle threaten the stability of the entire clan. The first season of the drama series, which also stars Ryan Hurst and Kyle Gallner, deals with the distribution of power within the Farrell family and their quest to maintain control over their land.
