Newly divorced after being caught in a compromising situation with old flame Anthony civil servant Katherine is shocked to learn that she must immediately leave London to work at an immigration office in Northampton. New boss Danny purports to be a practising Muslim but is a burnt-out, drug-taking shambles and worse Katherine was once his boss. Furthermore, along with super-efficient Jenny and earnest Nathanial Katherine's new colleagues include Anthony, who is not keen to resume their affair. Not only does she have to share a small flat with Jenny and anxious department head Lucinda Jeffries she also tumbles to the fact that Danny's promotion is due to his total inefficiency, which will give the government the excuse to close the office down.
