After an argument with her boyfriend Patrick Holthusen (Valentino Dalle Mura), 25-year-old Anja Liebke (Valerie Stoll) disappears without a trace. On the family boat, the police discover a bloody fishing knife with Patrick's initials-and so much blood that a homicide is suspected. Despite this, the circumstantial evidence trial surprisingly ends in an acquittal. Thanks to his half-sister Kristina's (Elsa Langnäse) alibi, Patrick leaves the courtroom a free man. Two years later, Anja's remains are found on the coast. Forensic pathologist Dr. Henning Strahl (Christoph Tomanek) discovers clear evidence of a violent crime-and once again the trail leads to Patrick. But the law prevents a second indictment: "Ne bis in idem"-no one may be tried twice for the same crime. During the course of the investigation, Detective Finn Kiesewetter (Sven Martinek) has developed a strong emotional connection to the victim's parents. His colleague Lars Englen (Ingo Naujoks) urges calm. Driven by frustration over Patrick's acquittal, the detectives find themselves caught in an emotional conflict between law and justice. Suddenly, Patrick's key witness, Kristina, disappears under mysterious circumstances. Is he desperate to prevent his half-sister from retracting her alibi? Even his stepfather, Hanno (Thomas Lawinky), is convinced of Patrick's guilt. A dangerous escalation of revenge, anger, and blame between the victim's and perpetrator's families complicates the investigation. For the detectives, a dramatic race against time begins, because Kristina has diabetes and urgently needs insulin.
