SPOILER: Archie MacDonald, carving out a life for himself as a restaurateur in London, finds himself called back to his home in the Scottish Highlands to assume his role as The Laird of Glenbogle and get the 40,000 acre estate back on its feet. No matter the romantic interest and all the emotional undercurrents as the young Laird Archie wrestles the Glenbogle estate into the 21st century. Justine, Archie's girlfriend has competition from local school Headmistress Katrina and cook Lexie battle for the Laird's heart. Whilst Archie has to cope with his eccentric parents Molly and Hector and their friend and neighbor Kilwillie. 5 years later, Archie's half-brother Paul Bowman comes to Glenbogle, and becomes Laird of Glenbogle, whilst Archie and his new wife Lexie leave for New Zealand. He has many romantic interests including farmer Isobel Anderson, neighbor Lucy Ford, brewery chairwoman Amanda MacLeish and shepherdess Iona Maclean. Paul has to control the wacky duo of Uncle Donald, the chef Ewan and his goddaughter Amy whilst single parent Golly gets help from his daughter Jess and friend Molly with looking after his new-born.

Facing the insurmountable debt that the estate is in, everyone living at Glenbogle house is struggling to get by. Tempers flare as Justine begins to take over the management of the house while the estate bankers decide whether or not to continue supporting the crumbling castle.

Hector and Kilwillie finally reach the day they have long been waiting for - opening a barrel of whiskey that has been aging for 30 years. When Archie gets wind of it however, he rightfully claim the prized nectar as property of the estate. Despite his best efforts at protecting the precious drink, Archie finds he may have met his match when Hector and Killwillie set about trying to reclaim what they see as rightfully theirs. Archie also sets off a bit of a firestorm when he advertises for an estate ranger. As the fifth generation ghillie at Glenbogle estate, Golly MacKenzie sees that as his job and despite Archie's assurances that the two don't conflict, Golly feels unwanted. Soon Archie has three applicants for the position in the form of Golly, Duncan and an old friend Fergal MacClure, a professional environmental scientist. Archie may have more to deal with when Katrina seems smitten with the very handsome Fergal.

Archie's 30th birthday is at hand and while he would just as soon let the day pass like any other, the family is planning a surprise party to mark the occasion. Hector also has his own plans for Archie, deciding that the time has come for his son to marry and produce an heir to the line. An article in a magazine describing Archie as the most eligible bachelor in Scotland will, he hopes, do the trick. Archie will have nothing to do with it, that is until he meets Tonya Conway who along with her father, drops in to visit him. She immediately realizes that Archie is in love with Katrina. Archie doesn't realize however that Tanya and her father are hiding something. As well, Katrina and Fergal are still seeing each other.

Molly finds herself face to face with a hard-nosed gangster to whom she owes 4,000 pounds. In a risky game of poker, she risks everything to clear her debt, without letting Archie find out. Meanwhile, tensions arise between Fergal, Katrina and Archie as Fergal begins to show interest in Katrina and questions her relationship with Archie.
