Archie McDonald, a young restaurateur, is tricked into returning to his home, Glenbogle, by his eccentric father and mother, Hector and Molly. Once there Archie finds out that the estate is on the verge of bankruptcy. In this pilot episode we also meet some other employees at the Glenbogle house, Lexie, Duncan and Golly as well as the young school teacher, Katrina.

While making the rushed preparations for the family, Justine learns of a past tragedy that still haunts the MacDonald family.

Harold Xavier returns to Glenbogle after a 25 year absence. He is a genealogist and has returned to check the records for the Ballantine clan and to deliver a bequest to the rightful heir. Duncan's grandmother may have been part of that family and he's now convinced that he is going to become a laird in his own right. While digging the records out of the attic, Archie finds a case belonging to the family's onetime cook who turns out to have been Katina's mother. Her diary reveals a long hidden secret that suggests Katrina may be part of the family and results in Molly moving out of the house.

Archie hits on the idea of producing spring water as a means of raising money to keep the estate going. Katrina isn't sure she likes the commercialization, but when her well goes dry, she definitely sours on the idea. Archie's sister Lizzie returns to Glenbogle with a group of friends intent on turning the manor house into a wellness center. She also announces that she is pregnant. Her plans conflict with Archie's and he takes a dislike to her boyfriend Gerald, convinced the man is a charlatan. Golly meanwhile seems to have vanished and when Lexie learns his secret - and his problem - she suggests to Archie that it is the Laird's duty to help him out and give him advice.
