In Season 5, Molly (Melissa McCarthy) returns from her 8-week stint at a prestigious writers' workshop with a big advance for her in-the-works novel. Of course, nothing ever runs smoothly in the aspiring author's life and she comes down with a serious case of writer's block, and has a run-in with her publisher, who wants her to spice up her book with a provocative rewrite. Later, Molly mines mother-in-law Peggy's juicy past for fodder for her second novel, and to research it, accompanies Peggy (Rondi Reed) on a road trip to her rural Missouri hometown and an encounter with Peggy's estranged sister. As for Mike (Billy Gardell), his adventures include a joyride with his partner-in-crimefighting, Carl (Reno Wilson), when they get stuck in the back of a stolen truck. The two cops also cause a family rift when they arrest Mike's mother-in-law, Joyce (Swoosie Kurtz), after she refuses to take a Breathalyzer test at a DUI checkpoint. Mike also gets to finally meet his Aunt Rosemary (Margo Martindale), and is bowled over by her sweet disposition.
