By putting his own mind and will to work, he has shown us all that, even with a disability, there's almost nothing that can't be achieved.

The Potential Within: Turning Disability into Capability

Featuring Former Michigan Lt. Governor and current Director of the Michigan Small Business Association, Brian Calley, and Jenny Brown, Director of Rochester-based Dutton Farm. These two tireless advocates have collaborated on programs that help both those with physical AND mental disabilities become capable, productive, self-supporting members of our communities. One of these programs is the Dutton Farm run by Jenny Brown, where disabled individuals are taught indispensable, real life skills, in this case in the areas of horticulture and animal care. All with the goal of equipping them for a fulfilling life in a career that they're good at...and enjoy. But it's their own personal stories that help make Brian Calley and Jenny Brown especially good at the work they do--and enjoy so much. Calley has a daughter with Autism and is a tireless promoter for employing the disabled. Brown developed this non-profit, Dutton Farm with the mission to empower and support adults with disabilities to live a life of purpose, inclusion and dignity.

Opioid Epidemic: How it Snuck up on Us

Former Drug Court Judge Linda Davis whose daughter was a heroin addict. This national epidemic has resulted in skyrocketing fatal overdoses from heroin and prescription painkillers each year in our country for the past several years. "Initially, I did not understand that without treatment a person addicted to drugs just came back out with the same problems that sent them to jail," said Davis. "There just weren't a lot of studies that talked about drug addiction before the opioid crises became synonymous with it. We thought we were doing the right thing but in reality, we were doing a lot of harm to individuals and families." At the time she never imagined that one of those families could be hers.

Armani knows the difficulties of living with Autism, but is also proving each day that they do not need to define him. Armani shares how he's overcome the "limitations" of Autism to become the first professional NASCAR driver openly diagnosed with the disorder.

Course Correction: Juvenile Mental Health Court

All children need support, especially those facing mental health issues. "We developed the program with two goals. The first goal was to give children the skills they need to manage their mental health independently. The second goal was to focus on education." Judge Edward Joseph details the motivation for establishing the Juvenile Mental Health Court of Wayne County and explains why it's so important. "If you're a parent, or if you're a child or a teen, don't minimize your mental health needs. Focus on them...and reach out for help." Judge Joseph explains the importance of addressing mental health issues on this show - and shares the resources that are there to help. Mission Statement: The mission of the 3rd Circuit Court's Juvenile Mental Health Court is to identify youth with mental health issues and divert them from the formal court docket; to connect youth and their families to appropriate services in the community; to reduce the number of youth with mental health issues who become repeat offenders; to increase adherence to appropriate services for mental health issues by using a multidisciplinary team approach to develop and monitor service plans and compliance.

Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) is changing the way law enforcement and citizens with mental health issues interact. "The biggest benefits of the training are the minimization of the injuries, deescalate and assuring the citizen that we are here to help." Chief James E. Craig of the Detroit Police Department, and Former Assistant Chief James White of the Detroit Police Department discuss how Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) is making a positive impact on both police officers and the citizens with mental health issues and/or addictions they are working to help. "We're able to get them [those with mental health issues] the services they need rather than jail time." Officer Marcus Harris II of the Detroit Police Department is proud to be a part of CIT, and shares his message on this week's show of why it's so important for those facing mental health issues.
